I've passed by this 9th Avenue spot on the N-MUNI line dozens of times. I always wondered if it was any good since I could easily go for a Hawaiian plate lunch at any given moment. One day, I finally got off the N and decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a rather tired-looking place despite the beach photo on the wall. I believe it's a Chinese-run eatery because there was plenty of loud talking in the kitchen that sounded like any other Cantonese fast food spot. The menu was plastered on the wall in very small print (photo). I was lured by an unusual item, the $15.75 Atkins BBQ Plate which meant no rice and no mac salad. It consisted of three BBQ meats - short ribs, beef, and chicken - accompanied by two fried eggs sunny side up and a tossed green salad (photo: While it was a full plate, the meat was on the tough side and way too saucy. The eggs and the $2.85 Hot Black Tea were the most satisfying elements. Not much aloha spirit here. FOOD - 3 stars...plenty of meat with the Atkins but it didn't tickle my palate AMBIANCE - 3 stars...sparse with a minimal tropical feel SERVICE - 2.5 stars...barely engaged TOTAL - 3 stars...needs more aloha love RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Popped in this non ambiance style food place for lunch as an alternative to my first choice which was closed. I ordered the BBQ Mix Plate chicken & short ribs The chicken was moist and flavorful short ribs were a little chewy but flavorful The rice and Mac salad were common no special differences from other similar Hawaiian spots The service was very pleasant and professional the gentleman behind the counter was playing video games to keep himself occupied but promptly stopped when I came in I approached that. I may go back to try other menu items.

I was looking for some breakfast food and Mahalo caught my eye with the food pics in the window. I enjoyed being there, but I was the only person dining in. Seems like they mostly do carry out. The man who took my order was really nice and I liked the feel of it being a small, independent business. Like I said, I wanted breakfast. I had M's special: French toast, bacon, two eggs, and hash browns. $11.95 before tax and tip. It was all pretty good. The hash browns were like the kind you get at McDonald's, but they were OK. They do not serve coffee! Crazy, right? I thought Hawaii was known for its great coffee. Oh well. Bring your own coffee if you want it with your breakfast.

I got what would be a normal American breakfast. The eggs were ok, but the hash browns were oil soaked and undercooked squares that you’d find at a local Safeway freezer section, and the sausages were nothing special. The service was poor as it seemed me wanting to order was a big chore for them. I think this place is more geared for delivery than eating there. A big warning sign I ignored was that I was the only one there. If you want a good breakfast, look elsewhere.

The beef patty on the loco moco was kind of overcooked and dry, and the gravy was a bit too runny. The egg was really well done though and their Mac and cheese isn’t bad.

I went here on my lunch break for a loco moco & spam musubis. It took waaaaay longer than I expected. Almost 15 minutes waiting. For the spam musubi I would give a 4/5 knocked it out of the park on flavor but they both fell apart after 1 bite. The loco moco 2/5. It filled me up. No flavor or seasoning on the rice, eggs or patties. Gravy sauce was frozen, couldn't be poured. Dissapointing. Patties were WELL done. Beyond having any flavor left in the beef.Macaroni salad, 1/5 I think something was expired in this item because I had speedy indigestion afterwards. Not nice.I'll try it again. I think this was just a one-off.
