I was on a run out of town and got hungry, and asked a couple where I should go to grab a quick pastry and coffee. They suggested Doubles, and I went. They had exactly what I needed some good black drip coffee and a wonderful piece of coconut banana bread. I am not a huge coconut fan but I like it in moderation. This banana bread was so good! What a sweet neighborhood spot Doubles is a Columbia Heights classic, with a long interior and neutral vibe. The workers are kind and friendly, even saw some masking (score). They make good coffee art, and have high quality drinks. I have not tried the alcohol there, but the draft system looks impressive. The place is clean and nice. I’ve tried them all. Elle, the Den, Emissary, Tatte, Buna, 1990s cappuccinos at the Willard. Gotta hand it to the Den at #2, also an excellent experience. But Doubles is #1.Best coffee in DC when they get it right. Get a latte “for here” in one of their thick ceramic mugs and sit out in the warm Spring air on their covered patio. What a way to spend a Sunday.
