Their Okro

“Tastee Ds was a surprise find hidden in a small shopping plaza in a residential area of Bear/Newark. Google maps had even listed it under a different name, but one of the owners assured me they had been functioning at that spot for 4 years, and their social media presence confirmed this. I arrived not long after opening and was let in out of the cold to relax until they were ready to serve. The inside has large screens, but also nice African art of the walls. Even the pillows on the banquets were covered in African cloth. The menu featured Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Liberian African standards ranging from pounded yam, jollof rice to attieke. There were even a few Jamaican specials, giving a nod to the diaspora. The okra (ila) stew with goat meat was perfectly seasoned and went well with the pounded yam (iyan). Since I was driving, I passed on the beer and enjoyed a ginger sorrel drink, which people attribute to Jamaica but is also a feature in Sahelian countries. I had to have pepper soup to finish off, and the cow foot soup was spicy as expected and desired. I also bought moin moin (bean custard) to take home and enjoyed this for breakfast. The service was friendly. There is plenty of parking. At least four takeaway orders were picked up while I was there, attesting to the local popularity of the place. This was a meal that not only made my day, but even my week.“
