NOOOOO!!! I seriously cannot tell you how sad the Mr. and I were when we read that Alan Wong decided to close the doors on his flagship restaurant. Another great restaurant affected by COVID. :( Alan Wong is a must stop every time we are on the island. So many great memories and celebrations for our families from birthdays to anniversaries to graduations were made here. Each dining experience was always different, in a good way! We never got tired of the food because it was always exciting and good use of local favorites. Alan worked closely with the local farmers and resources on the island, everything was always fresh with a very similar concept to what we are use to in CA. Service and food never disappointed, always on point with also a great selection of seafood. Now onto the dessert, we LOVE them all!! The Mr. can never leave without ordering his own "The Coconut"...that's one dessert that he refuses to share w/ others...he just sits there and enjoys it all for himself. Thank you Alan for gracing the culinary scene on the island with all your delicious eats. Although we will miss Alan Wong's dearly, we are excited for what is to come on your next culinary adventure. Good luck and best wishes, we will get through this!

This review is pre-covid, I'm just missing Hawaii and can't wait to travel back soon and go to Alan Wong's my favorite!!! Last visit was during restaurant week so they had a special 4 course dinner menu with Yellowfin Ahi, Keahole Half Lobster Tail in truffle butter, Filet of Beef and the famous Coconut dessert!!!! Absolutely loved everything and especially the friendly and great service!!!

Restaurant with favorite splurge in Honolulu. Also fantastic food and impeccable service. Elegant enough to be a great birthday date but welcoming enough to have little ones. The short ribs I still get are super tender and flavourful.

We have eaten at Alan Wong's on two occasions, both pre-COVID-19.RESTAURANT:Alan Wong's is in a surprising location. It is on the third floor of what seems like a small office building. However, the restaurant is very nice inside. SERVICE:The service is some of the best on the island. I rarely could take two sips of water without my glass being refilled! FOOD:We ordered the whole tomato salad, Kauai shrimp "escargot style," da bag, seared day boat scallops risotto, and the coconut. The tomato salad is one of my favorite tomato salads, anywhere! The escargot style is a unique way to eat shrimp. Da bag arrives at the table as puffed up tin foil over the bowl. The server then opens the tin foil to release the steam and expose the clams and kalua pig. The coconut presentation is beautiful and the dish itself is extremely refreshing. ALL-STAR DISH:Whole tomato salad

Fantastic service and delicious food. This is a review for a dine in experience before COVID! Very classy and romantic atmosphere, with a nice view outside of the city.Highly recommended appetizers:"Da Bag" - 5/5 very fresh mix of seafood steamed in a foil bag, one of the most popular dishes hereTomato salad - 5/5 I never thought I'd eat an entire tomato for dinner yet here I was, scarfing one down. What makes this dish stand out is the Li Hing Maui vinaigrette it's paired with - absolutely divine.Entrees:Surf and turf - 3.5/5 tasted as about expected, presentation is well done in a trio of small plates. Nothing super special.Ginger crusted onaga - 3/5 came highly recommended by the wait staff but didn't live up to the hype. Likely wouldn't get this again. The flavor combination was not my favorite. Seafood bowl - 3.5/5 the seafood was also super fresh, but the miso broth paired with it was too salty.Overall, really nice place for a date or a nice dinner with family/friends. Would definitely come here again and maybe stick to the apps. :)

Take-Out (3.5 stars):Back in December 27, 2016, my family dine at the next door Chef Mavro, as President Obama and First Lady block the King Street to dine at James Beard Award Best Chef recipient Alan Wong.We ordered a number of dishes to serve family style:1. Gau Gee (Gyoza) 2. Kalua Pork Caesar Salad 3. Stir Fried Soy Beans (Edamame) 4. Ginger Crusted Fish 5. Twice Cooked Short Ribs with gingered shrimp6. Miso Marinated Butterfish 7. Kauai Shrimp, Clams & Fish in Soupe de Poisson Broth8. Local Style Beef Stew9. Seafood Corn Chowder10. Bonus - Sweet Potato CheesecakeWe passed on the loco moco, New York steak, and salmon rissoto as we have enough food. All dishes have delicate taste, using local ingredients and influence such as Kahuku corn and kalua pork. The seafood dishes were cooked to perfection w/o heating instruction. For take-out, the dishes were prepared at least an hour prior won't be the same as dine-in.I give some stars off as I felt the ginger crusted fish was not a dish we enjoyed. We've heard Alan Wong's fish dish tend to be more cooked compared with Roy's. The ginger/green onion oil and well-cooked fish can have unpleasant after-taste. Same goes for gingered shrimp on top of the short rib, it is unclear what the dish is trying to accomplish for a meat dish with seafood on top.The Kauai Shrimp, Clams & Fish in Soupe de Poisson Broth is by far my favorite dish for the evening. I would order it every time when it's on the menu. Miso butterfish remain tasty served cold. We will definitely dine at Pineapple Room one day.

Our first dinner date sans kids since Covid shutdown. We chose Alan Wong's to celebrate my birthday back in June as it has always been one of our favorite restaurants. Food is always on point and it still is!!!! Loved the food, service, and to be quite honest the spaced out tables are perfect. We used to find it a bit TOO cozy in there with tables so close to each other. The restaurant is currently offering a 4 course tasting menu for $75 and $115 with wine pairing. Flavors and portions are on point. Each sections comes with a few choices. The second course is definitely a main dish served in its regular portion size. The third meat course is more of a 'petite' but it's more than filling and you definitely leave feeling full! See photos and descriptions attached. Forgot to take a pic of hubby's braised short ribs dish but he said it was delicious.

If you're looking to celebrate a special occasion, Alan Wong's is the place to go! I haven't been to their original location in years but it was definitely a meal in the books just like how I remembered. This location is only valet. We came on a Sunday so luckily we were able to grab street parking right outside. Though they weren't serving their classic pre-fixe menu, they had a special instead. A 3 course menu which included nori wrapped tempura ahi, surf and turf, and of course their legendary coconut for $65. We decided to get their special menu and added on the soup and sandwich (chilled tomato soups with kalua pig foie gras sandwich). We also added their lihing tomato salad. Each dish had its own unique flavor and was delicious! Hands down the seafood lasagna as weird as it sounds was one of my favorites. We also enjoyed the lihing tomato salad which sounds weird but if you're a fan of lihing then you'll enjoy it. You can definitely share it! If only the soup and sandwich were full on entrees, I would eat that for days. For dessert, we had their famous coconut which is a coconut sorbet dipped in chocolate and Mac nuts with fruit. It was soooo good and I'm not much of a coconut fan. It's one of the top 5 desserts I've ever had. Since we were celebrating, our server brought us this honeycomb cheesecake which was amazing as well. It wasn't heavy or too sweet. Service is always win! Our server was really friendly and always made sure we were doing okay. He was attentive and made conversation with us. Amazing service! Overall, Alan Wong's never disappoints. Just wished they serve their plantation iced tea like Pineapple Room. (I miss it!) Their take on plantation iced tea has a ginger taste which is still good, don't get me wrong, just wanted the nostalgic feels. The food and service is great. Definitely worth it for a special occasion. Note to self: follow their Instagram account because they post special menus and deals once in a while. Can't wait to go again!

Alan Wongs was (is?) doing $40 per person dinners, which I think is still a little pricey but since I had a more expensive bento, although I think it was more food, and also since Alan Wong's is such a well-known place, it was worth a try. I got the kalbi with ginger shrimp. It came with instructions on how to construct it, as well as salad, dessert (maybe sweet potato cake?), maybe something else, and we also ordered edamame, a ramen set, and local eggs which were $13 for two dozen or so. The kalbi was very soft and melted in my mouth, and surprisingly went well with the sweet shrimp. I guess it's like a local surf and turf and it was delicious, like many other things I've eaten recently, a very homely and comforting taste with a slight twist, in this case the shrimp and kalbi which I wouldn't expect to be paired. The ramen didn't seem really special and although it came with a tasty chili oil thing I would have probably been satisfied with the sun noodles packets they sell in stores. Salad was good as were edamame. I've made some different dishes with the eggs and the yolks are very savory and creamy, I think that was maybe my favorite part of this meal given their price. If anything, the importance of novel combinations of foods and using local eggs were two lessons I learned from this meal.
