They sell egg tarts, coconut tart and moon cakes but they are famous for their egg tarts. I bought an egg tart and a coconut tarte to try. Both were delicious not too sweet. The egg tart tasted eggy since it's an egg tarte after all but you also have a vanilla aftertaste. The crust was layers of flakes that crumbled as you bite into it. Overall it was pretty good but I'm not sure if it's the best egg tart I've had in USA considering the ones in New York. I was expecting it to be very big as I saw some other post but it was just the standard size. It is price-pretty/expensive for an egg tart when compared to other bakeries selling egg tart. Either way it was fresh and hot since they had a have high turnover reate. I waited 30-40 minutes on a Saturday around 12:30PM and the line moved very slow. I don't think I'd wait for an hour or even two like other Yelpers have. The staff were friendly, cash only and no parking. I'd go back if I"m in the area and the lineups are short.

Tucked in an alley, this place is such a cool factory/shop to visit. You can see the workers make the fortune cookies and they are generous to offer freshly made cookie pieces. So many options to choose from, from the classic original to fun multicolored chocolate dipped ones. There is even green tea and strawberry flavored ones. Such a cool, fun and historic place to visit. Great for souvenirs.

Golden Gate Bakery has been in business for 50 years in SF Chinatown. Parking is difficult and there are almost always lines. You may be wondering if it's worth it and I'm here to tell you.. YES! It's worth waiting the while and it is seriously that serious for their egg tarts. These aren't your ordinary egg tarts... they're soooooo good. The perfect amount of sweetness and filling. $3.75/ea, $45/dozen. The women running the business are super sweet and kind. You can no longer enter the bakery, so you just line up outside and order at the door. The tarts came out super warm and fresh upon ordering. Forever nostalgic.

this place was highly recommended by all my friends and I can see why! literally the best egg tarts I've ever had and they are huge!! bring cash and you just order through the door. it's so crazy their hours are irregular so you never know if they're open. luckily we were able to order some!

Unassuming store front, but quick service. The custard tart was knee-buckling good. Back for more tomorrow.

So happy it reopened and got to eat their egg tarts again! Went around 3:30 pm on a Sunday and there was a small line outside the shop. The line moved pretty fast but by the time we got to the front, they were making a new batch so we had to wait a little longer for our order. We got a dozen egg tarts for 45 dollars so 3.75 for one egg tart which is a little pricier but still so worth it. Custard egg tart - Our egg tarts were fresh out of the oven and I highly recommend eating it when you first get them. Eating it later on, the tart still keeps its crunch and flakiness even when reheated. The best part is their custard, it has a strong egg flavor and a nice sweetness level. A perfect sweet treat after a Chinatown meal and there's a facebook group called "Is the Golden Gate Bakery Open Today?" that you can check to make sure it's open before heading over.

Best egg tarts in San Francisco!! Was in the area and decided to check out the bakery to see if they're open and they were! And there was no line! Bakery is still gated up, but there's one of the workers by the door taking orders and collecting money. Make sure to bring cash as they're cash only. Egg tarts came out hot and fresh - so eat them as soon as you get them. Crust is super flaky and filling is not overly sweet! Have to try this place at least once when you're in the city!

A trip to San Francisco is not complete without dan tat from Golden Gate Bakery and beef jerky from Jackson Market. The tarts are warm from the oven, you gotta wack them on the spot, and the crust is flaky and buttery! Cash only, pay attention or you going to get short changed in the hustle and bustle, and short changing is definitely a side hustle for Golden Gate Bakery! Their hours are unpredictable and they often take off during the summer months, but it's worth standing in line for and even having the regulars cut in front of you!

The hype is real... this was on my list of "must eat" places on my first trip to the area. We drove to the area around 1115am on a Friday, the lady inside said they would be open at 12 so we decided to walk around the area and circle back. We came back at 12pm, and there was a line with a couple people in front of us. This place is cash only, egg tarts are $3.75 each which seems steep but the tarts are pretty big. The egg tarts came out warm and was so good. I loved that it wasn't too sweet, and the crust is perfectly flaky I highly recommend coming here at least once!

There's a reason there's always a long line!! We waited roughly 40 minutes for these famous SF Chinatown egg tarts. You line up beside the store and pay when you get to the front through the door. After paying, we only waited a few minutes to get our order. Hours are pretty irregular so it's hard to know if they're open ahead of time. The egg tarts are everything you hope for in one! They're flaky, soft, and not too sweet (the ultimate compliment). Street parking is hard to find, but we parked around the corner at a lot for $7/hour. It was my first time visiting Golden Gate Bakery, but I'll be back -- no matter how long the line is!

The mysterious golden gate bakery...didn't know if we would find it open or closed because I guess their hours change from time to time. It was getting dark and we weren't sure if we would make it....as we got closer we saw a line! We were in luck but the owner came out asking each group how many they wanted because she ran out but would make more if we could wait 15 minutes. So of course we waited in anticipation! I feel like we were the luckiest ever because they were fresh out of the oven! I had not tried an egg custard before so I don't really have anything to compare it to but the crust was flaky and delicious and the egg custard was creamy, such a good combination. The owner of the bakery was adorable and so kind!

5 stars for the egg tarts. Fresh and hot, the line can be long, depending on the time of day. My spouse waited 2 and 1/2 hours when we got there at 4 pm. They closed at 6 pm, but the lady came out from the store front and said that they would serve all who were already in line. The following week, we were again in SF Chinatown, and there were only 3 people in line. Score! Don't expect first class service. The place looks boarded up, but if there is a line, it is open.

As usual, we arrive before 11am so we could be the first few customers while it opens. The egg tart is delicious and the coconut tart is ok. FYI... this is a cash only business!!

Had no idea about this place, had eaten dim sum earlier and was bummed the restaurant we were at was out of egg tarts. We happened to by walking by this bakery on an early Saturday evening, without a clue this place was there as the windows were all covered with papers. We saw a line of about 5 people when we walked past. On our way back, we saw about the same amount of people in line but the door was partially open and a lady was exchanging cash for a box of something. We asked someone at the end of the line and they said it was a bakery with delicious egg tarts and it was rare for them to ever be open. We waited in line too and soon enough walked away with 5 of the best egg tarts I ever had in my life lol. At first I thought the price was steep, but the egg tarts are actually quite large.

Ever since this place blew up for idk what reason... it hasn't been the same... I waited 1 hour for custard tart, be prepared to wait 15-20 min for every 5 people in line. $45 for a dozen, very bad customer service, very angry lady worker. I've Been coming here for years and this is the worse experience, it was going smoothly til the point they heard my order wrong, instead of easily fixing it. They told me take my money back and go after waiting a hour. Luckily I got my order for the fam...but i wouldn't go back to this sh*t service again.. first time ever where a server blames their customers and tells them to leave. Mr.Bread on Taravel is a better alternative, easy parking and NICE people working that care about their customers
