I am fairly new to the Des Moines area, but what I do enjoy is the small town charm in a big city, which includes finding a local bakery to get fresh bread. I found this charming bakery named Big Sky Bread near my home and finally found what I've been searching for! The parking lot is to the left of the bakery, and when you enter, there are a few racks of bread loaves, homemade granola, local jam/honey, and pastries. I tried the Italian loaf, German rye sliced bread, their very own pop tarts, and cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting. I forgot to take a picture, but they were all very beautifully made. The owner/cashier Terry was kind and let me know they also have a booth in the Downtown Farmer's Market in May. I am excited to return again for a restock in the near future. Thanks, Terry!Parking: Free parking lot to the left when facing the bakery

My husband absolutely loves their bread and cinnamon rolls. I really enjoy the granola and sugar cookies.

This hidden gem is the most amazing bakery you’ll find in Central Iowa! Locally and family owned, their breads, pastries, and especially the granola are always fresh and delicious! Their product is available in some grocery stores, however they’re conveniently located in Urbandale, so a quick drive to buy straight from the source is the better choice! You won’t regret the visit, because you’ll find a friendly/helpful staff and very pleasant owners who are always accommodating with orders and customer service!

Wow. Have driven by this place hundreds of times and never stopped. Got a loaf of the French peasant bread at HyVee the other day, and I’m addicted to it. I’ve eaten it plain, toasted, with butter, without butter, as a sandwich, as a grilled cheese sandwich, as a snack, as a meal, you name it. Just. Plain. Delicious. If this bread was a person, it would be my new best friend. Highly recommend.

Wonderful, gigantic, and delicious cinnamon rolls! We had a dozen cream cheese frosted, and dozen white iced for breakfast at our office - everyone loved!

Bought these 4 Dutch Letters from this place at HY-VEE and they were absolutely horrible, They were as hard as a brick, completely dried out and the amount of pastry was way too much for the little bit of filling they had, you had to search to even see it. In the pic it looks like it is a solid circle of filling but it is a hollow circle, they were terrible. The second pic shows how much of the pastry I had to peel of to make them taste anything remotely like a good Dutch Letter is suppose to taste. If I hadn't thrown my receipt away on my way out of the store these would have been retuned immediately after opening them. For $6.98 I feel this was the worse purchase I have made in a long time!!

Big Sky Bread is the answer to healthy- I mean actually wholesome good bread. No preservatives! Just pick up a loaf and compare to what you normally buy. If you have issues with gluten you think or you told all this mumbo jumbo- change your food to whole. Another thing. I thought this would spoil in a couple days. Lasts me the whole week. Love it!!! My only wish would be more seeds through out the bread.
