The Basque community in Boise is remarkable. They work hard to preserve their culture and at the same time everything our American culture.

There seems to be a general lack of understanding about the Basque Center in Boise - certainly among non-Basques. The Basque Center was built in 1949 and is a gathering place for Basque people in the area as well as non-Basques. It is available for rent and it has a huge kitchen in the basement for catering events. This past Saturday in support of the Basque Block Christmas Market, the Center featured the Basque music group, Txantxangorriak, and performances by Boiseko Gazteak, which teaches traditional Basque dance children from 4 to 13 years of age. It was a lively afternoon of traditional music and dance while the largely Basque crowd cheered and appreciated the show of talents. The Center is open to the public and non-Basques should not be intimidated to enter the bar for a good strong drink at a really low price. Be mindful that the Center is closed Monday, serves drinks after 3 pm Tues-Thur and has extensive hours Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Center is celebrating the 93rd Sheepherders Ball on Saturday, December 17th with a dinner that is currently sold out. After the dinner, the Oinkari Dancers (ages 14 and above) will perform at 8:00 PM, followed by a lamb auction which raises funds for the Basque Charities account. The dance, featuring the popular band "Amuma Says No", will begin after the lamb auction. The cost of admission to the dance is $5 for adults and children under 12 are admitted for free.

Great community with a lot of history. I was lucky enough to experience several types of traditional food and dancing. The museum and boarding house are full of history and a must see for anyone visiting Boise.

Friendly staff and customers. Customers are welcoming and eager to explain their culture. And prices are amazing for a downtown hotspot.

The Basque Block is one of Idaho’s unique cultural blocks of a living ethnic neighborhood- Basque. It is comprised of two boarding houses - the Cyrus Jacobs-Uberruaga house, and the Anduiza. The block has its unique indoor frontón court, the Basque Center, the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, Bar Gernika, Leku Ona restaurant, and the Basque Market. The cultural food is one of the main attractions here. There is Basque History Mural completed by Noel Weber and The Letterheads in 2000, located on the Basque Block off of Capitol Blvd. One of the original Letterhead Members, Bill Hueg, hand painted a reproduction of the work which was translated into this new digital version displayed on the west-facing wall of the 104-year-old Anduiza Fronton building. The Museum Hours are Tuesday – Friday: 10am to 5pm and Saturday: 11am to 4pm. It is closed on Sunday, Monday, and Holidays. If you are in Boise or visiting Boise and you are a history geek, I would say definitely check out this place and also try the food here to taste a different ethnic food.
