It had delicious redfish and bread pudding. Quaint place with friendly staff in an old cafe style building.

My food was ok, stuffed shrimp, house salad was good. The house sauce and onion rings were the second best part next to the staff. Security guard was amazing!

The locals seem to rave about it, but the food was not great. The whole place needs a revamp.

We had dinner tonight - February 23, 2024, at the Mayflower. I'm originally from the Gulf Coast, so I know good seafood. This wasn't good seafood; it was actually bad seafood. For starters we had fried onion rings, which were pretty good, but came with a strange sauce that tasted weird. Thankfully there was so little of the sauce that it didn't matter. We also had fried crab claws, which in the past had been very good. These were bad. Unfortunately they were accompanied by a tiny container of cocktail sauce, which wasn't nearly big enough to hide the "off" flavor of the claws. Next came a tiny, utterly forgettable salad, with what they call comeback dressing - again forgettable. Then the entrees arrived - one redfish, one red snapper - indistinguishable from each other. They actually were most likely the same fish, both WAY overcooked, soggy, and FAR too salty. Neither of us could finish the entrees. Then the finalé. The bill was $122 before the tip. No liquor - they don't sell it. The Mayflower Cafe is an icon of downtown Jackson dining, but it survives only on its reputation, and the place was packed tonight. We won't be back.

What can you say about Mayflower that hasn't already been said for what, half a century?! It still remains the best restaurant in Jackson. And still going strong. I just hope they DON'T shut down!

History is amazing, atmosphere is okay, good is okay. Server was rushing and kept saying we got two more tables…. There were only three tables occupied. Thought we try fried green tomatoes. They were bland. Chicken and dumplings were pretty tasty. They were out of gumbo. Glad we made it by but wouldn’t recommend for food.

Bring your own wine and don’t bother with the menu. Your delightfully polite and very Southern server will tell you what to get/the fresh fish they have that day (redfish and snapper are standards, with trout and flounder showing up a lot, too). And you’ll have the salad with the comeback dressing, and maybe a cup of the gumbo. All the fish is prepared basically the same way — broiled or grilled creating a light crisp finish on the top and succulent meat beneath. The fish is served in a drizzle of Worcestershire-spiked lemon butter sauce that I’ve never had anywhere else. It is sublime.I’ve eaten at the Mayflower maybe 30 times over the last 20 years and never had a bad experience or even close to one. It is a treasure.

The freshest gulf fish, cooked simply and perfectly! Broiled, topped with crabmeat, with fries for sure. Side of fried shrimp. Don’t leave Jackson without eating here.

We got drinks and a good cannoli. You don’t expect cannoli in mid Mississippi but it was good.If we had realized they also had food we would’ve stopped for a whole meal! Next time for sure on the meal.
