Literally the best place to get sushi in Reno. This is "real" sushi, not the Reno-typical AYCE. Expect a refined experience that's not otherwise available in Reno. While not quite to the standards of the best-of-the-best omakase places in the large coastal cities, the value for the experience is remarkable. Also, Francisco, the sous chef, is both a sweetheart and a dream boat. Never leave us, Hinoki O!

Hinoki is one of our favorite restaurants for sushi and I tried their sister restaurant last week as I was in the mood for a Poké bowl. I was impressed with the variety and freshness of all of their ingredients, and I had a hard time deciding between the octopus, which looked amazing or the shrimp but I chose the shrimp and Ahi combo with lettuce, brown rice, a variety of sauces, ponzu was one with great flavor I chose mixed with the spicy Mayo. Then you get to the next part of Poké bowl fun, and you get to pick from a variety of vegetables such as edamame, carrots, cucumber, ginger and some shaker choices as well, I chose the sesame seeds. The bowl was fresh and tasty with not too many sauces. I actually could've used a bit more but I was impressed with how large the bowl was. Sat out in the warm sun in their beautiful outdoor area at ranch harrah on this early December day as it actually was a warmer day for December, and lunch couldn't have been better! I will definitely be back to try more great poke.

Superb Omakase comes to Reno! Chef is very knowledgeable and skilled with flavors that are both bold and unique as well as familiar and comforting. Terrific one-bites with extremely fresh and high quality sushi, meat and seafood. This place deserves a Michelin star IMO. Get the sake flight, it paired marvelously.

Wow! What an amazing experience! My husband surprised me for our 10 year anniversary with an evening at Hinoki O with wine pairing for me, and sake pairing for him. I loved that it was a small group, which made for a nice and intimate evening. Also, the group we shared this experience with, was lovely and everyone talked and shared stories. Each item we tasted, was SO delicious and just melted in your mouth. My husband and I both just kept looking at each other, wide eyed, amazed at everything we were tasting. I enjoyed my wine pairing and I know he found a new favorite sake. I can't even decide on a favorite because it was all just absolutely wonderful. I would say that it is very pricey. But, a perfect place to enjoy on special occasions. In a city where we're bombarded with AYCE sushi on every corner, this is a wonderful addition to Reno.

Way overpriced. Not even much of an experience. The chef doesn't seem to know his fish well. Not a good value for your money. The ambiance should also be improved. I'm my mind this guy is just looking for an easy buck

Wicked good. Something you should experience but you can't describe. Yelp won't let me post this without a couple more sentences. Wu-Tang is for the children.

We always look for good Japanese food when we visit Reno. Today was hand rolls only and they were so good. The service was great and we all loved the choices. I don't usually order hand rolls so I was surprised at how tasty these were. We will definitely come here again.

In the mood for sushi. Came here because of the rating. 4+stars. Gotta be good. Much to our stupefied, it was a sushi bowl place. Ok. Just as good but more food. I ordered the tuna bowl. I loaded it up. Rice, avocado, sea weed, ginger, etc. My buddy ordered the yellow tail bowl with crab, rice, etc. Both bowls were really good. Fish tasted fresh. The service was great. Everybody was very helpful. This was our first time here, and needed the help. We sat outside were we could people watch and talk. This was a great find for our last day in Reno. The Villages is a great place to bring the family the chill with friends or meet new ones. Glad we found it.

Chef Duc presented beautifully and skillfully crafted dishes whilst proving such a wealth of information about omikase and sushi in an approachable way, he has a lovely friendly demeanor. Chef Duc displays a fabulous balance of technique, curiosity and excitement about food that cannot be matched. What a wonderful experience for our anniversary ❤️

Had dinner here over the weekend and it was awful. For $200pp you'd expect to have a memorable dining experience and the fish to have flavor and variety. Part of the Omakase experience is to have fun and be entertained and educated about your meal. This unfortunately did not occur. Most of the comments and conversations with the chef were just bizarre and misinformation. He is not a professionally trained chef and nor is the sous chef. According to the owner/chef he's self trained from YouTube!! His sous chef has only been working there one month and didn't understand how to serve the items or make the rolls yet. Nothing stood out and most of it was very fishy tasting (only one item tasted good - salmon), which made sense after we learned that he wasn't even trained. It appeared that he used the same lemon sauce that was brushed on each item. Sushi takes a lifetime to perfect, especially the rice. Service should be excellent at this price point!! The server left all our warm hand towels on the table, over reached as she served people and we had to ask multiple times what we were being served. Not to mention the person seated next to me (a stranger) decided to sneeze all over me and spit his food on me. The chef and his staff just watched and didn't offer me extra napkins or wipe the table down. After I went to cleanup in the restroom I had to wipe down my eating area myself and ask for clean napkins. Absolutely ridiculous. The wagyu was served via butane torch!!!! It absolutely ruined the flavor and meat. Why not cook it on a hot rock to add to the experience and not ruin the meat. Having eaten at Omakase style sushi several times before this place was a great disappointment. They are trying to create something that they really don't have the experience or knowledge to do. The food and experience was no better than the average all you can eat sushi experience. They need to either lower their prices or up their game.

What more can you say about perfection? That Hinoki O is serving some of the best sushi I've ever had is certainly a subjective statement. That the experience is exceedingly intimate - almost to the point of being daunting - is also correct. However, if you love Japanese cuisine as we do, then this is a place you absolutely must visit. What Duc, Chef/Owner of Hinoki O has done is create a bit of a separate peace; entering through his more conventional restaurant (Hinoki Poki), a sliding door reveals a small side room with just enough room to seat six at the bar, plus the chef, his assistant and the sparse yet attentive waitstaff. The menu is omakase-style, which means you leave it up to the chef to decide what you'll be having and how it will be served. The price ($160 for standard, $200 for deluxe) may seem high, but in all honesty I think Duc's breaking about even considering the quality of fish and the expert service you receive. We had the deluxe menu, which included Japanese uni (small and sweet) and seared wagyu (meltingly rich and delicious), in addition to the 12 other courses that come with the regular menu. Duc started us off with chawanmushi, a light broth and custard dish hiding a delightful surprise slice of scallop at the bottom. And what followed was a wonderful procession of sashimi and nigiri sushi, all of it perfectly prepared and seasoned. All the while, Duc regaled us with stories of sushi - what we were having, where it was from, why he was presenting it and how it should be enjoyed - which made the experience effortlessly flow. Don't expect to get California rolls here, nor a bath of soy and wasabi for your sushi. This is the real deal, artfully prepared and ready to enjoy. And enjoy you will. I cannot wait to go back!
