My regular café just closed so I need a new regular place and was hopeful Roots could be it. So disappointed. I ordered a large iced coffee light with half and half and sugar. I was charged $6 for an iced coffee! When I asked why it was so expensive I was told they don't have iced coffee only cold brew. That should have been said up front. You don't charge customers double for something they didn't order. I received the cup full to the brim and was met with attitude when I asked the barista for space in the cup. I then requested simple syrup since the coffee is cold and won't melt granulated sugar. The woman proceeded to tell me that I was asking for too much so close to the end of the day but that she would happily make it for me. Seriously? Sugar for ridiculously overpriced iced coffee that isn't iced coffee is too much to ask? Yeah. Definitely not my new regular spot.

I stumbled upon this cozy cafe by chance, and it instantly felt like home. The atmosphere is inviting, the menu is tempting, and the experience is delightful. Highly recommend for a relaxing treat!

This place was cute! I love a chai and some ambiance :) Great people, good snacks, nice drinks. Def try this place if in the neighborhood.

I enjoy sauntering over to this place during lazy mornings. I especially like the community feel. However, to echo what others have mentioned, their customer service leaves much to be desired. Each time I stand at the counter waiting to order, it's a mystery what I will get. Typically, it's a blank "why are you standing here" stare followed by a reluctant hello. I always feel unwelcome by the baristas who always seem to be engaged in some sort of intense personal conversation which I am interrupting by asking for a latte. A smile or even a "Hi there, What can I get started for you?" Would really go a long way to keep in theme with your welcoming "community" vibe.

Roots is my favorite cafe in South Park Slope/Greenwood. Their coffee is fresh and high quality, staff is very friendly. They have many delicious options for food with pastries, muffins, and hot food options. The seating is very comfortable and welcoming environment. I really like that they have vegan options such as the Taibbi sandwich, Jamie's burrito, pastries, and non-dairy milk. My only critique is that the vegan scramble in the vegan burrito is a little bitter and I suspect it's because there's a little too much turmeric or other spice in the spice mix. This is a leftover from the previous owners of the cafe. My recommendation for restaurants making a tofu scramble would be tone down the turmeric (it's mostly only for color), add nutritional yeast, cumin, and a little black salt. The mix recipe from the Post Punk Kitchen is a great starter base with a lot of flavor.

Iced coconut americano is delicious and original. Perfect caffeine jolt in the summer.

Came here at 3:06pm to order food, was told “the kitchen is closed “… the cafe closes at 4:00pm. Who closes their kitchen 1 hour before closing?? Will not go back, wasted my time traveling here.

I love this place and the people here! The espresso is so delicious and interesting. Not your basic sort of café—always doing amazing and engaging things in the community.

Really, really terrible customer service. I'm local and have been to Roots many times due their vegetarian menu options. The barista wearing the bandana acts like you're inconveniencing her by existing, but I was willing to let that slide. This unpleasant attitude ended up transforming to petty comments, constant eyerolls, and bad lattes (which are ridiculously overpriced) to boot. I genuinely thought the barista had a problem with me until my husband went in and had the same (if not worse) experience. I will not be returning.

Roots has great coffee, great espresso, great food and great pastries, but more than all of that greatness it is a place that has dedicated itself to being a sanctuary for many different kinds of people, and for promoting arts, help and communal gatherings: practices which I have found to slowly be dwindling away in NYC over the years. The owner Trish is extremely open and receptive to ideas and is constantly bringing a light of expression and acceptance and color to this cafe, and there is an ongoing calendar of open mics and discussions and events that my heart in the midst of so much gentrification had been yearning for. As soon as you walk into this space you no longer feel like a drifter but like a person who has been welcomed into a large inclusive mealtime and I have found it easy here for my inner muse to find her space and flow with any work or writing projects that I had come with my laptop to complete.
