It is with a heavy heart and a lot of reflection that I feel compelled to share my recent experience at your establishment. Myself, my 2.5-year-old son, and my husband visited two days ago. While the server displayed kindness, unfortunately, our encounter with the owner left much to be desired. During our visit, my son innocently licked salt from his hands, prompting an abrupt intervention from the owner who expressed concerns about waste. Though understandable, what followed left me deeply unsettled. As I prepared my coffee, my son's curiosity led him to sample the remnants of milk, eliciting another sharp reprimand from the owner stating both times “He cannot waste that I cannot afford it.” (He is 2.5 any mom reading this know what a 2.5yo is like) who then removed the creamers from our table without consideration for our ongoing use. When I called her out she asked how many and puts 2 on the table abruptly. As this is happening the couple behind is looking at her behaviour and I could sense their discomfort as well. Feeling increasingly uncomfortable, I attempted to address the situation with the owner, only to be met with further distressing behavior. Not only did she disregard my concerns, but her actions escalated to the point of mimicking my 2.5 year old son to her staff, adding insult to injury. In that moment, I realized that what I was experiencing transcended mere rudeness. It was a display of insensitivity and, dare I say, discrimination. As a person of color, walking into an environment where I felt singled out and demeaned was deeply troubling. Despite expressing my distress, the owner's response lacked the compassion and understanding I had hoped for. Instead, her dismissive apology only served to compound my feelings of isolation and embarrassment. As someone committed to anti-oppressive principles, I cannot overlook the implications of such behavior. My experience at your establishment has left a lasting impact, one that I sincerely hope prompts reflection and meaningful change. In the spirit of empathy and inclusivity, I urge you to consider the implications of your actions and strive to create a welcoming environment for all patrons, regardless of race or background.
