The food was interesting, not normal you will find at a restaurant. I had the special dish, fish with walnuts and apples - very creative. My friend had the pasta, he said it was also creative. The razor clams were good, nice big pieces. The dessert was so so, ice cream was the best dessert. The food portion was small compare to the price they charge. Service was great. Overall, this place has creative food that you might like or don't like it.

Higgins remains one of the better fine dining options in Downtown Portland. The food preparation and presentation is above average and the service is top notch. I wish they had a broader offering of local wines, featuring some of the better labels such as Penner Ash and Willamette Valley Vinyards.

Disappointing

I ordered razor clams. They came with a very spicy tomato sauce which ruined the clams , blah basmati rice, a tiny dab of coleslaw which was quite good, and a spray of charred cauliflower. No lemon. Very disappointing especially at the price. Service was good.

The special sole was fishy smelling, usually a sign the fish is not very fresh. The waiter said the dish came with plenty of vegetables so I didn't order a salad. When it came though, the only vegetable was a few beets and one piece of grilled lettuce. A disappointment. While the lettuce and beets were good, it wasn't what I was expecting based on what he said. We've eaten at Higgins many times over the years and the food has never disappointed until last night. We'll still go back, but admittedly I was surprised.

Terrible. All of it really - just incredibly disappointing. My wife ordered the duck off the Bistro menu and a cup of soup. The soup is some kind of parsnip something but was so bland it basically tasted like something you'd feed to a 90-year-old so they didn't get indigestion. No flavor at all. When her duck showed up, it was 5 paper-thin deli style slices of cold duck with a pile of apple chunks and celeriac. Not as it was described on the menu. For me, I ordered a burger. Simple. It came with soup or a salad, but the waiter didn't ask which I wanted and they just brought me a salad. The salad was undressed - dry. So it was basically just a bunch of winter greens (read as -bitter lettuce) with no dressing at all. The burger - No chef can screw up a burger right? Wrong. I ordered it mid-well because I prefer a more firm texture with my burgers. When it came out the first time it was rare. I was very kind about it, but sent it back and the manager agreed that it was way undercooked. About 15 minutes later he brought out another one, and when I cut into it, exact same thing. Blood dripping all over the plate, and inside of the burger had the texture of wet bread. The waiter came over to take our order at the beginning of the meal, and then we never saw him again until we had to flag him down for the check. Considering "false advertisement" and a pathetic duck breast plate, and two bloody burger attempts (again – how can a chef cooking at a restaurant like this not be able to do a simple burger???) We won't be going back and definitely would not be able to recommend.

The pasta was underwhelming and one-note with spiciness. $35 is fairly high but understandable for this type of restaurant - bonus points for being filling. Other dishes I tried from my party were similarly underwhelming. Having gone to Higgins a few times over the years, it feels like they are slipping in terms of quality. I like the atmosphere and the service and would probably come back to try their bar burger, which I hear is very good.

I try to stay away from Higgins, having had bad meals in the past. Last night I had no choice as others selected the location. I did not expect much so I only ordered the cabbage salad (tasteless) and two choices from the charcuterie menu (both skimpy). And this coming from a guy that did not want to eat a lot as it was late.We ate in the bar. The two other people said the burger was okay, although the bun seemed stale. Their small salads were barely dressed and when additional tasteless dressing was brought to the table it did not help. One person only drinks sparkling wine and I heard afterward that it was of low quality and she said not good.Higgins must be coasting on their reputation from decades ago.

The price of each dish has gone up drastically, while the quality of the preparation is only ok. We were disappointed especially since the restaurant is so close to our home, and has been a favorite in the past.

Most of my disappointment in this experience at Higgins stems from the service. This was a pre-show dinner for the Schnitzer one block away and we arrived even a bit early for our reservation that should have had us done in ample time for the show. Wolfing down our $50 entrees to rush out the door to just make it on time shouldn't happen, especially given the caliber of this establishment and that this must be a significant portion of their first seating business. I appreciate the efforts they make to use seasonal ingredients, but at times, as this one, it does seem to significantly limit the menu to the point of some of our party being hard-pressed to find something interesting to order. Chowder was watery, though admittedly loaded with protein and veg. On the plus side, the wine list is affordable, the cocktails were well made, and the cassoulet was loaded with protein. Still, maybe a bit too eclectic and slow for a return visit any time soon.
