I have been wanting to try this place and finally decided to take the leap today! I didn’t realize it was INSIDE the transportation hub, but it’s like a nice little quiet spot to just have some good food. I got the Havarti Dill with the tomato bisque soup and enjoyed every bite! The staff members were very kind as well. Will definitely be returning!

So this place is located in the Amtrak center in Altoona. And, unfortunately that can make it hard to discover from the street. But once you find this place you will realize that a diamond in the rough never tasted so good! The prices are reasonable and the ingredients used are high quality. The grilled cheese style sandwiches are great and just hit the spot, having appropriate volume and heft.Today I got the "Jack Wagon" grilled cheese with pepper jack. I did add to the sandwich once I got home because I previously mentioned to the owner that I would like to see SPAM offered as an option in the future. So today's review and photos will feature a custom add on using SPAM.But, in conclusion, I can say that these sandwiches are good and worth the money. It is a eating experience full of great taste that leaves you satisfied. It's one thing to simply eat something,..... it's quite another to eat something and be satisfied with taste and flavor. Some food chains crank out stomach fillers that offer no real pleasure in the process of the food getting from the mouth to stomach. But that is not the case with Prophets Melt Shop.So I can honestly say " Start it, if you think your gonna make a Prophet!!"Try it and you'll see.

The BEST grilled cheese I've ever eaten, hands down. I got the Utah with bacon but I'm excited to come back and try allll their other menu items. Looks like you can't go wrong with any sandwich. I also had a chance to chat with the owners - incredibly kind couple! They convinced me to try the tomato bisque after I admitted I'm typically not the biggest tomato soup fan. It was delicious and I finished every drop. Highly recommend this place!

Very delicious food, freshly made and very tasteful. A melt that hits the spot every time. Maybe they'll come over with a melt challenge ☺️

Grilled cheese and tomato soup, is there anything else that goes together more perfectly? I know that some of you out there are going to disagree, but just shut it. This review has to do about grilled cheese and you will sit there and listen to this. But before we get to the food let's talk about this place. If you are not from Altoona this is a bit of a find. When I followed the GPS I thought that it was joking and took me on a wild goose chase. See it is inside the Altoona Transportation Center, which is a parking garage, Amtrak station, Greyhound station, city bus depot, a church, restaurants among other things. There are no big signs that tell you this is here, but do not deter yourself from exploring. Also the hours are a bit odd, breakfast and lunch, closed out by 2:30. The front of this shop is very unassuming as it sits in the corridor that connects the front of the building to the loading area for all things travel. It feels like you are walking up to a cafeteria counter and are about to take a tray back to the table. I did a look over of the menu for a hot minute because I have never been here. After looking at it for a minute I went with what is their signature sandwich, or melt, that they call "Co-Jack." This is your grilled cheese that is a bit beefed up. It is a healthy portion of Colby Jack cheese between some of the toastiest pieces of sourdough bread. Each melt gets a side of pretzels, which I thought was a bit odd, but somehow paired well with the sandwich. Wanting to pair that with more than just the pretzels, I opted for their tomato bisque. Their bisque added carrots, celery, onions, garlic, and cream to the tomatoes. This soup was so tasty, and of course I used it to dip the grilled cheese in. But I also dipped those pretzels in as well. But the best part of the meal, after being messy from eating the buttery grilled cheese dripping in tomato bisque, I got to finish the bisque on it's own. My belly was definitely full after this meal. And maybe I was transported just a bit back to my childhood, making for a nostalgic meal. Definitely a well hidden secret in Altoona for an outsider. Worth the venture.

Perfect lunch spot! I had the dill havarti (Really Big Dill) and tomato soup. The sandwich was cooked perfectly with gooey cheese and slightly crispy edges. It was an elevated version of my childhood grilled cheese - nostalgia in every bite. Prices were very reasonable and every meal comes with pretzels. AMAZING!!!!

Had the dill sandwich and mac and cheese, both of which were absolutely delish! Good prices. Quick and friendly service. Definitely recommend if you're around downtown Altoona for lunch.
