How Many Pizza Restaurants Are There in the US?
There are currently over 100,000 pizzerias in the United States, according to Restaurantji.
The geography of pizzerias in America is very diverse - there is not a single state with more than 9% of all pizzerias. California has 8,9%, followed by Texas (7,5%), New York (6,5%), and Florida with 6,1% closing the leaderboard. On the other side, you'll have the hardest time eating pizza in Alaska, Vermont, and Wyoming - those states combined have just 0,7% of all pizza restaurants.
Pizza is a very affordable dish - more than 3/4 of all restaurants (85,165 or 77,6%) are in the $-$$ price range. And only 53 fall into the category of expensive establishments with a $$$$ average price tag.
The most popular pizzerias are Domino's Pizza, Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, and Papa John's. They have a combined total of 34,558 locations in the US. That's 65% of all chain pizzerias, or more than a quarter (27,7%) of all pizzerias overall.
But don't let their popularity fool you - we analyzed millions of reviews and found that the average rating of independent local pizza restaurants is a cut above chain pizzerias (4,07 vs. 3,2 out of 5).
7 Most Popular Regional Pizza Styles
Neapolitan Pizza
The original Neapolitan pizza comes from Naples, Italy and has just a few fresh ingredients: dough, tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and olive oil. It must have more sauce than cheese, resulting in a very wet center, so it's served unsliced as a personal 10-12 inch pizza. Strict guidelines from the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana dictate the ingredients and cooking method of baking at 800°F-900°F for 90 seconds in a wood-fired oven. This creates the signature puffy, charred outer crust. Variations don't qualify as true Neapolitan style.
Sicilian Pizza
The original Sicilian pizza called sfincione has a thick, fluffy bread base topped with a simple tomato sauce made with onions, herbs and anchovies, plus breadcrumbs instead of cheese. When Sicilian immigrants brought it to America, mozzarella was often added. For New York-style Sicilian pizza, the same spongy dough is pressed into an oiled square pan and topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella. The bottom gets crispy and charred while the middle stays soft and doughy. Authentic versions don't use mozzarella since sheep/goat milk is more common in Sicily.
New York Pizza
New York is considered the birthplace of American pizza restaurants, with Gennaro Lombardi opening the first licensed pizzeria in 1905. New York-style pizza has large, floppy slices that are wide and pliable. The crust is thin but not as thin as Neapolitan pizza. An important feature is the ability to fold the slice to eat on-the-go. The oversized slices, around 9-10 inches long, have a crispy bite but stay chewy from the high-gluten flour used. The sauce usually contains herbs, while the cheese is aged low-moisture mozzarella. New York pizzas are traditionally cooked in coal-fired ovens.
New Haven Pizza
At first glance, New Haven pizza looks similar to New York style - circular, thin crust and large. But the slices are smaller and the shape is irregular from longer dough fermentation. Like Neapolitan pizza, it has a signature charred crust from being cooked in scorching coal-fired brick ovens. A famous example is the tangy tomato pie from Sally's Apizza, loved by Frank Sinatra. The sauce is made from a proprietary tomato-herb blend with no cheese. The longer fermentation gives the crust a distinct chewy texture and nuanced flavor.
Detroit Pizza
Born in 1946, Detroit-style pizza was originally baked in rectangular steel pans meant for auto parts. The thick, fluffy crust gets a crispy, buttery caramelized edge from the pan's cast iron-like qualities. It's basically a cross between Sicilian and deep dish, with cheese spread from edge-to-edge under the sauce to ensure a crispy crust. Classic toppings are pepperoni and brick cheese. You can still get these iconic rectangular pies at the original Buddy's restaurant or Loui's in Hazel Park, which has a vintage 1970s vibe.
Chicago Pizza
When people say "Chicago-style", they usually mean the famous deep dish pizza with a buttery, yellow crust made from wheat flour and corn oil or butter. The dough is pressed into a deep pan and topped in reverse order - first cheese to prevent burning, then toppings like meat and veggies, and finally a robust tomato sauceLayer. It takes around an hour to bake. Some prefer the cracker-thin, square-cut tavern-style pizzas that are common in Chicago. Fillings are added to the dough in a pan, with cheese and sauce on top for a lightly-fried crunchy edge.
California Pizza
California pizza broke the rules by featuring fresh, innovative toppings representing the state's diverse bounty of produce. It started in 1982 at Spago in Los Angeles with a smoked salmon, red onion and dill crème fraîche pizza. Chains like California Pizza Kitchen popularized unique flavor combinations like barbecue chicken, avocado carpaccio, and mixed toppings like pear, walnut and blue cheese. The crust is often similar to Neapolitan style - thin and hand-tossed - but the generous toppings are where California pies get creative and over-the-top.
Most Popular Dishes in Pizza Restaurants in the US and Canada
Restaurantji collected millions of restaurant reviews from all of the Pizza restaurants across the US and Canada to find out, which particular pizzas are mostly loved by North Americans.
Pepperoni Pizza
Pepperoni is the most popular choice of topping, and analysis by Restaurantji only proves this. About 251.7 million pounds of this flavorful, meaty topping is eaten annually in the U.S. on pizzas. More than 36 percent of the pizzas ordered at restaurants around the U.S. have pepperoni as a topping. Its tasty slightly smoky and spicy flavor makes it easy to understand why so many people love it. Surprisingly, pepperoni wasn't created in Italy - it was invented by Italian immigrants in New York City in the early 1900s. Pepperoni became a go-to topping when pizza chains like Pizza Hut and Domino's opened, since it was inexpensive and traveled well. Common ingredients are a pizza crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and thinly sliced pepperoni.
Some of the most praised restaurants serving Pepperoni Pizza, according to Restaurantji:
Excellent pizza , polite staff , thanks for many years of hard work , I hope you can continue to expect such a high level of quality
Nice place, nice food, great costumer Service! It was our first time at that store and it was a great experience! The female manager was very nice and helpful she recommended us to try their best dishes and we really liked all of them! Totally recommend it
They have a keto pizza that is small but very filling and tasty. We attended their Valenwines event. It was great and very educational. I did not know that they offered such a wide variety of wines and can perfectly pair them with pizza.
The pizza is very authentic, fresh, and good!!! Its one of the Best pizza spots on the northside of Jacksonville.
Kid-friendliness: We love pizza!! Lol
The pizza and gelato are amazing!
Super cool place and the staff is very friendly. I love the nostalgia and the atmosphere. They have a pretty darn good pie as well.
Vegetarian options: The mushroom and pineapple pizza is next level.
Not only is the food delicious, the service is impeccable. You will look hard and still not find a better proprietor than James. He goes above and beyond to make certain your time spent there is a pleasant experience. Y’all should take time to visit and see for yourself.
Delicious pizza, fantastic caprese salad, amazing meatball sub (huge!). Gave kids a sample pizza dough to learn how to make pizza crust. SUPER friendly staff. Can’t wait to go back! Thanks for a great time!
Just moved into the area. This will be our new go to spot for quick Italian. Has a full bar, pool, and club!!! Here we go!!
Meat Lovers Pizza
This hearty pizza is topped with a variety of different meats like pepperoni, sausage, ham, and bacon. It's popular with customers who want a protein-rich meal and love the flavor of meats. Some versions may also include vegetables like onions, peppers and mushrooms, though the focus is on the meats. Key ingredients are pizza crust, tomato sauce, cheese, and assorted cooked/cured meat toppings.
According to Restaurantji, the best Meat Lovers Pizza is served here:
Wonderful atmosphere great customer service! The pizza ? is amazing with hight quality ingredients that you can taste. We had a build your own pizza and a pastrami sandwich. Both were amazing. I will definitely be back. Best pizza in San Juan Capistrano.
I’ll be honest. I really enjoy the smash burgers here. Their options are the best and they hit the spot every time. Their pizzas are great. Thin crust and the sauce is fresh and they don’t skimp on toppings. The subs are great. Everything is fresh and made to order. The best part is that everything is under 20 bucks so you can eat good without really breaking the bank so to speak
The pizza here at Barros was by far the best pizza we’ve ever had better than Papa John’s better than Domino’s better than Pizza Inn better than Pizza Hut, he’s just better. The crust is thick and wholesome. The pizza sauce is the right balance under the cheese and toppings. I recommend you try any of their pizza specials and also the create your own pizza ? with the thickest softest crust possible. This was an awesome dinner! This was an awesome dinner! Love it! I usually eat three or four slices of pizza from any other pizza restaurant before I’m satisfied at Barros I ate one and a half pizza slices and was satisfying, immediately!
Parking: There was multiple parking spots
Kid-friendliness: It’s kid-friendly, and the kids love the pizza
We absolutely love pizza provisions! This is our go to for pizza! Definitely GREAT pizza. I also love their wraps. They have really good deals as well. The owners take pride in their restaurant and they deserve every bit of their small business. They also care about their customers and I love that.
Being from NY this is without a doubt outstanding
I went over there earlier this week had some nachos.. I wanted only Chicken on my nachos. My server I guess just didn't hear me she added other items to it but it was still delicious. I definitely would recommend the nachos. The restaurant I thought was extremely clean! My server Teresa was extremely helpful even though she made that one little mistake but she was a lot of fun very attentive My overall experience I would go back..
Excellent food and Service. Great price and of ur favorite pizza place!
Celebrating my daughers early birthday with phenomenal pizza. My first visit and not my last!! Not only was our pizza delicious but our server Brittany was attentive and phenominal. She and my daughter share the same birthday!
I can not believe Graham, Texas has this caliber of restaurant. It is fantastic food, and atmosphere. They even have a pianist playing Friday and Saturday evenings. Erica was our waitress and did a phenomenal job.
Supreme Pizza
In the US, a supreme pizza usually contains traditional toppings like pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. However, in Italy, the term "supreme" isn't used and topping combinations vary by region. Supreme pizzas appeal to many because of the variety of flavors - from savory meats to sweet pineapple. The exact origins are unclear but some believe it started with Italian-Americans customizing pizzas, or with the rise of pizza chains creating new topping combos in the 1960s. Typical ingredients are crust, sauce, cheese, plus an assortment of vegetable and meat toppings.
Users recommend these places for the best Supreme Pizza:
Great service, food and prices! After we left the chaotic seed to table never finding a seat we came to Leonis. Waiter was super friendly right away. Pizza and salad were great too. Free beer was a nice surprise as well. Highly recommend!
This place is amazing fun arcades and the service is friendly and wonderful. The tables are clean and well stocked with napkins and staff is attentive
Kid-friendliness: Many games for kids and friendly environment
My family has enjoyed La Roma’s wonderful food for 30+ years! It has been consistently delicious! Thank you for nourishing us all this time. The cabbage rolls are *mwah! Chef’s kiss!
Lillian's was great!! I have Celiac disease, I need to have Gluten-free. Great Gluten-free pizza, went back a second time, had Gluten-free pasta and Alfredo, which was delicious. they were caring, considerate and concerned about my needs! Thank you!! #PerdidoKey
We went there for a graduation party. Reservations were made. Pizzas were ordered ahead and ready soon after arrival. The pizzas are always delicious at Marion's. The service was great. I have a great grandson who is lactose intolerant. His grandmother brings special cheese for him, and the pizza makers have always made his special pizza.
Dietary restrictions: See above
Kim was the waitress, and greeted me as soon as I walked in.
I placed my order, and was told it would be about 20 minutes or less.
After I ordered, the place got really busy.
I noticed that Kim was friendly and greeted everyone that came in. Her shirt said " l survived 1 year at Idaho Pizza'.
This was the first time I had been to this Idaho Pizza, but I'll be back.
Sammie was an amazing waitress! She was very sweet and accommodating at a time when the restaurant was filled to capacity. Delicious food and better service!
This place is awesome! The pizza is amazing and the owners are so kind! They personally delivered my order tonight after Door Dash overcharged me! Diego rocks!!
Local Gem We live a 15 minute stroll from Mangoni's Italian Market, but at "feels like" temps hovering around 105°, strolling to lunch hasn't been as attractive ? Sunday, hubby wanted a relaxing lunch with sangria! So, we drove (& charged our EV in the parking garage). We had the entire patio to ourselves, as diners likely expected unbearable heat. Mangoni's pergola and great ceiling fans made patio dining the experience we wanted---even when the afternoon storm blew up from the west, we were protected from rain. We enjoyed our favorite, GF goat cheese pizza, with our sangria. Unlike most places, Mangoni's GF crust is an excellent, thin cauliflower crust. And, it’s not an upcharge. We also enjoyed meeting Georgia, the regional manager, who chatted with us about the social hour (11-6pm weekdays). She made a GF garlicky cheesy Flatbread for us to try--now we have more reason to stroll (or drive) over! Oh, and take away is a frequent option. Really, Mangoni's is a local gem.
I ordered The Works with extra cheese and this pizza hit the spot. This is my first experience with them but certainly not my last. Yum
Lasagna
An Italian favorite, lasagna is surprisingly one of the most popular non-pizza dishes at many pizzerias in the US. It's a comforting baked casserole with layers of wide noodles, cheese, meat sauce, and more cheese. Though strongly associated with Italy today, lasagna did not actually originate there. It may have evolved from ancient Greek laganon noodles layered with toppings and eaten with a stick. The key ingredients in modern lasagna are wide flat noodles, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, ground meat sauce, and tomato or bechamel sauce.
These places pop up the most when talking about a perfect Lasagna:
First time I’ve ever ordered Italian food through drive thru. What a convenience. Enjoyed my food
Fazoli's on Hwy 94 at Friedens in St. Charles MO,#5910. is a very well run restaurant. It is clean and the food is always delicious. Today, Otita took my order with a smile. She was friendly, kind, and professional. When she brought my food to my table, she made sure everything was ok, and asked if I needed anything else. My thanks to Otita for her great customer service and for a job well done.
Delicious food and excellent customer service! My favorite place for manicotti.
I will not let my last visit influence my review. I will say we did go on father's day and our sever seemed frustrated. Anyway, that being said we love the food and the service. I actually like the food here better than the original place in little italy in san diego. Bis servings an priced fairly.
I went here for the first time on a Saturday and was amazed. First of all the food is authentic Italian food and the service was excellent along with the decorations. I felt like I was actually in Italy I’d definitely recommend this place
first timer today!!! very happy !!! amazing food!! I got the chicken sorrentino. it's eggplant Parm and chicken Parm. I had tears in my eyes right after the first bite. that eggplant Parm reminded me of my grandmothers. I wanted to tell our server and give compliments to the chef but I was actually still holding back so much emotion I really didn't want to ugly cry in front of her. so I thought I would leave it here. aside from the food, amazing service. everyone was welcoming and pleasant! we definitely hit up the pastries on the way out! ❤️❤️❤️ ps- idk why anyone is going to Olive Garden when Argentos is down the street!!!
I have a deep fondness for this establishment. The staff is incredibly welcoming, and the cuisine is truly exceptional. Every dish is consistently served hot and fresh. I've been a loyal patron for years, and I intend to remain one as long as I can.
The service was excellent and the food was delicious! A real treat… reminded us of Italy!!!!
Excellent service and the food is delicious!
A wonderful Italian restaurant.Very tasty and quick service. We had the carpaccio, mussels, and shared the pizza .Not only was the food great.Van the manager is superb!! She sure knows her dishes !!! Made some wonderful recommendations.Anferny our server was also top notch. Very attentive and on the ball !We will be back !!!!
Margherita Pizza
The simple yet iconic Margherita pizza was created in Naples with just a few quality ingredients: yeasted dough stretched into a round, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh buffalo mozzarella, basil, and olive oil. One legend traces its 1889 creation to honoring Queen Margherita with colors of the Italian flag: red (tomatoes), white (mozzarella), and green (basil). However, similar pizzas likely existed before that in Naples. The key ingredients are a simple bread dough base, fresh tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil.
Restaurantji suggests to try Margherita pizza here:
Great guys at the cash register, food was dam good, but SO many kids, I wanted to wait for takeout outside. You might consider some sound baffles in the rafters.
Dietary restrictions: Not only is Crispellis EXcellent pizza, they offer vegan cheese (because those of us with cheese allergies Miss pizza!!!). You could bump that advantage up by offering others like provolone and smoked gouda(vioLife), trader joes almond mozarella and any of the Diaya brand - they've come a long way in flavor and melting.
Parking: A large lot in front, but a side lot for take out orders
This is definitely one of the best No-Frills spots in Delco and surrounding areas. If you're looking for the fancy tablecloths and the staff to be in coats and ties etc, then this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for one of the best pizzas out there, then this is where you need to be. I know there's a lot of good stuff in Philly, but you don't need to go that far for a great pie.
Ok so we’ve dined at Old Scratch Troy location about 6 times since it’s opened. Waited a bit to give them time to really get in their groove. While I do recommend the place. Pizza is good, staff is nice (especially Amanda at the bar) and shareables are tasty. That said I would like to see the food’s taste be a little more consistent. My favorite dish is the fire roasted cauliflower but sadly it hasn’t been prepared the same way twice with the last two times it was barely seasoned at all once it was almost raw. Hopefully as training continues they will fix that issue.
Went there this week while attending a film festival. Hands down one of my favorite dining experiences. The food is TOP NOTCH. Had the Margherita pizza and Macaroni Al Forno. Tried my girlfriend’s meatballs. All Unreal. Also, Felix is one of the best owners and the care and love at this place was amazing to see. Can’t wait to visit Buffalo again just to eat here again!
1st visit--heard abut it from friends and it was fun and delicious at the same time! Conveniently located just off the SRT, too.
Delicious pizza, beer available but I prefer Coca-Cola… Your basic pepperoni pizza is called “the americano”. They have salads, but I never had it. They have crushed red peppers for your pizza that is a bit spicier than what you get elsewhere. They usually have soccer on the tv’s inside, but it’s not loud. I highly recommend this place.
We ordered a very good pepperoni pizza as a starter. Like in Italy....Afterwards we ordered a second course of pasta, spaghetti with squid and penne Rosseti, also very good. The dishes are very abundant, so we couldn't give ourselves the pleasure of trying the desserts. And the waitress named Melissa is very good.

The First Pizza Restaurant in The United States
Lombardi's – Est. 1905 (New York City) started out as a small grocery store on the corner of two streets in 1897. Lombardi's changed food history forever when the owner, Gennaro Lombardi, decided to start making pizzas in 1905. Lombardi's moved locations in 1984, but still uses the same type of coal oven to bake crusts that are blackened on the bottom with a yeasty, soft inside, topped with tomato sauce made from fresh basil.
About 350 Slices of Pizza Are Eaten Every Second in The US
Americans eat an average of 350 pizza slices every second. That equals about 100 acres of pizza every day and 21,000 slices per minute. That's a huge amount of pizza.
93% of Americans Order Pizza At Least Once A Month
Pizza is more than just America's favorite comforting food. It has become a regular part of our diet. More than 93% of Americans order pizza at least once every month. This means pizza makes up an important part of what Americans eat regularly. And it's probably the most delicious part of the diet too.
Pizza Is a Super Bowl Dish
The American Pizza Community says that around 12.5 million pizzas are ordered, baked, and delivered to football fans on Super Bowl Sunday. Domino's revealed they sell more than 11 million slices on just that one day. The most popular pizza topping for Super Bowl orders is pepperoni.
Studies show that 61% of people consider pizza a "must-have" food for Super Bowl parties. It's estimated that over $230 million is spent on frozen and deli pizzas in just the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl game.
The Largest Pizza in The World
Pizza Hut teamed up with a famous YouTuber named Airrack to make the world's largest pizza. The giant pizza was 14,000 square feet in size! It was made using huge amounts of dough, pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. Guinness World Records was there to officially declare it the largest pizza ever made, beating the previous record set in 2012.
Airrack wanted to make this colossal pizza for two reasons: 1) To celebrate getting 10 million followers on YouTube, and 2) To make up for a disappointing 8th birthday party from his childhood where the birthday pizza did not get delivered.
Pizza Hut helped sponsor and create this pizza. It took 48 hours of non-stop work by Pizza Hut workers and Airrack's friends at a convention center. The finished pie had 68,000 slices, all of which were donated to charities in Los Angeles.

They have swapped ownership (asked and confirmed) and you can tell by the service and quality. Use to we only got little Caesar’s to save money. Now it’s because it’s better also! The pizza is coming out just right. They are doing so good about having your order out on time, in my experience. This is on the weekend we do this so for me, that’s awesome. If you stopped coming to this particular little Caesar’s in the past cause of the quality or time, I’d highly recommend giving it another shot. Also, don’t mind the photo, yes I already dug in and writing the review while I enjoy it☺️
