Been meaning to go here for years. Finally did. What an incredible lunch deal! I can’t wait to return. Without a doubt this is the best sushi spot on this end of town. Sushi train definitely ain’t it!
They were not very child friendly, going so far as accusing my children of playing in the restaurant while they sat and read a book together. They were also upset about us waiting in the restaurant for a table with children. My children waited very patiently and were courteous, so we don't understand why these accusations were made against them other than they were simply children in an establishment that is not family friendly. We went to our favorite Japanese restaurant Sakura...read full review

Sonobana Japanese Restaurant is a long-standing Nashville staple, nearly 40 years old, offering authentic Japanese food without pretension. It is a true family-run restaurant that prioritizes quality, tradition, and consistency over hype. Many consider it hands down the best Japanese sushi restaurant in the city, standing shoulder to shoulder with top spots worldwide. The fish is incredibly fresh, the quality is consistent, and everything is prepared with care. Portions are generous and prices are fair and reasonable.
The cozy interior, recently remodeled, is smaller than most. The service is outstanding and quick, though very long waits, especially at dinner, are a constant problem. Calling ahead for takeout is recommended. The menu features excellent and delicious sushi, including rolls like the shrimp tempura roll, Erica roll, fresh salmon roll, and Rosie roll. Specific meals like the beef Sukiyaki are also highlighted, described as a cozy, umami-packed bowl with perfect tofu and veggies, though the beef can be overcooked. Other items include spring rolls and onigiri. While some note the sushi is not the absolute best in taste, and mention an extra charge for sauce swaps, the overall experience is consistently excellent. For many in Nashville, it is an essential and wonderful spot not to be missed.
