Been here twice. Great diner food and friendly. Had burger and fried chicken dinner. Prefer the fried chicken.
Full disclosure, Mel is my neighbor. I haven't had a chance to eat at his cafe yet but I can tell you he's a very nice and kind person. As soon as I finish my renovation I plan of trying out the food. He also does catering and my next door neighbor says the food is amazing and comforting.
Mel's fried chicken is made-to-order and is clearly reflected in its quality. The breading is flavorful, crispy and just so darn good. The chicken itself is moist and delicious. I would go as far to claim it as the best fried chicken in Charlottesville I've had thus far. On the contrary, their sides are just subpar. The collards left much to be desired and were fairly bland. The mashed potatoes and gravy were good, but nothing to write home about. The Mac and cheese was yummy but slightly dry. Would definitely come back for the amazing fried chicken in the future, but the rest of the meal was fairly unremarkable.
Mel's Cafe located on Main Street. No matter what I order from Mel's, I'm getting a side of onion rings ($3.25). They are crispy, fresh and when you take a bite the sweetness of the onion shines. The menu is wide ranging for all things on a grill and out of a fryer. I've ordered the pork chop sandwich, burger and fried chicken. It's all good and easy on your wallet. When asking around for recommendations of Black owned businesses to highlight, Mel's kept on coming up. So, I pass this recommendation onto you in hopes you check them out and say hi to Mel working the grill. Follow @MarleyRecs on Instagram for more!
Amazing food!! Loved the fried fish platter! Went with a large group and everyone loved what they ordered. Highly recommend the sweet potato pie!
Five star service at this Charlottesville eatery. Our large family found lots of options for dinner, including breakfast all day. We particularly enjoyed the fried chicken, fried fish, and grilled donuts with ice cream. Worth a stop when you are in town. The co-owner was so friendly.
Excellent food !! Got off route 64 to see Charlottesville and saw this diner ~ not disappointed
Friendly atmosphere and great food. Fried fish was perfect, not over done.
Delicious downhome cooking, we hope to return when in Charlottesville...I appreciate Mel's genuine passion for cooking and humbleness, he thanked each customer for their support...
The food was really good! Definitely a good price for the amount of food you get and the food has flavorrrr! For sure one of the best in town.
Friendly and good ole home cookin’ at it’s best! Great liver and onions!
An absolute Charlottesville staple. Delicious, fresh and hot food. Perfect for a filling meal without having to spend a lot of money. Love the burgers and onion rings. Follow @marleyrecs on Instagram for more Charlottesville recommendations.
Classic diner experience with classic old fashioned taste. Delicious food for an unbeatable price.
This place is fantastic! Simple and quaint, with delicious food.
I'm passing through the area and decided to stop in Charlottesville VA. In doing so I always try local spots...man did I ever find a honey hole at Mel's. Great food at a reasonable price. I ordered the wings and onion rings, and a slice of apple pie and did I ever float to sleep on a full stomach. This is a place I would call a hole in the wall but this place is better that all the big food chain restaurants in KY. If I'm ever back this way I won't miss the chance! Thanks for great food for me and my family!
