Cheng Du Chinese restaurant Reviews
Excellent
I’m a known chef visiting VCU in Richmond, Virginia and saw there were great Chinese places. Since 1981 I’ve loved however not found many legit shredded pork in garlic sauce dishes. They nailed it, this classic Sichuan dish . When she placed on the table I had flash backs to Houston Texas the last time I actually ordered the dish as every place did it no justice. If you’ve never tried its spicy, salty, little acidic. Steamed rice has to be and was perfect....read full review
Try the steamed whole fish (striped bass), pork dumplings in chili oil, dry fried green beans, spicy wood ear salad, Piao Xiang popcorn shrimp, Zhangcha Tea-Smoked duck or hot spicy pork ribs. Tiger lager is excellent. It's the Sichuan equivalent of a Cantonese place like Full Kee in terms of quality, execution and flavor.
VERY FRIENDLY! Great food!

Cheng Du Chinese Restaurant in Richmond is highly praised for its authentic and flavorful Sichuan dishes. Many reviews describe it as their favorite Chinese restaurant in the area, with some even saying it is the best Chinese takeout in Richmond. The menu features a wide selection of dishes, including classics like mapo tofu, dry-fried green beans, and braised dishes, all prepared with bold heat, proper use of Sichuan peppercorns, and layered aromatics that highlight their authentic style. The food is consistently fresh, vibrant, and crafted with skill, making it stand out from typical Chinese restaurants. Portion sizes are generous, and service is generally quick and friendly, suitable for groups, couples, or individuals. The restaurant is also appreciated for its vegan and vegetarian options, making it accessible to different dietary preferences.
The spicy dishes are notably spicy and flavorful, with some reviewers recommending visiting at lunch to enjoy the lunch menu. However, not all experiences are perfect; some dishes like cauliflower & pork belly in dry pot were less flavorful with little Szechuan spice, and certain items like fried rice and overcooked noodles received mixed reviews. Prices are considered on the higher side, but the quality and authenticity of the food often justify the cost. Overall, Cheng Du Restaurant is celebrated for its authentic Sichuan cuisine, bold flavors, and satisfying portions, making it a top choice for lovers of spicy Chinese food in Richmond.
