“I want to start the review by saying that I do have a background in culinary being an executive chef for many years and now teaching culinary.My wife and I decided to try this place for dinner and we're not disappointed. In fact, we had a great experience!I want to also say that everything there is made in house, using quality products, including the rolls for the sandwiches. My wife and I split a rigatoni Bolognese to start. The pasta was cooked al dente, and the meat sauce was authentic and delicious. Next we had a meatball calzone with ricotta cheese and mozzarella. The dough was so good as I was cutting pieces with the meatball and cheese making like little sandwiches, I can honestly say it was great! We also ordered a pizza which is made thin crust nice bubbles coming out of the oven, beautifully brown on the bottom crispy crust. The tomato sauce and cheese of a high-quality as well as the other toppings. I would rate this pizza, an 8.8 out of 10. Leaving room for the pizza meccas In New Haven. If you don't want to drive an hour, I recommend you try the pizza here! I had to try a half an order of shrimp scampi, the shrimp were done perfectly not overcooked, linguini was al dente, and the sauce is about as good as I've ever had, capers, sliced fresh garlic, lemon. I also ordered an Italian cold cut grinder to go with plenty of mortadella, capicola, salami, and pepperoni reminiscent of Franklin giant grinder in the south end of Hartford. I planned on reviewing the restaurant so we also have lunch tomorrow! It's a gem in Cromwell that shouldn't be missed!“

The place is charming, especially on Main Street, where you can find a range of attractive businesses.Our favorite remains Lenoci's Italian Kitchen, a real pizzeria set up in a small house.Big surprise when we entered, seeing part of the local Italian-American community seated there! The pizzas are very generous and made on site in dedicated ovens.For a little over $40 for 3 people, we really enjoyed ourselves. I chose Lenoci's Spinach Special with spinach, potatoes, sausages and mozzarella in a small size: it's the equivalent of a family pizza in Paris. I recommend it, but we had to take half the order with us in packages because we were full!Very pleasant and available service.It is very possible that we will come back next time, if the opportunity arises, and when the temperatures are milder ?...“

“Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. My best friend brought me for dinner. I wasn't expecting much as she said we are going for grinders. She did mention it's the best I'll ever have. I didn't believe her. But I was WRONG. You're greeted loke you're a friend or family. The grinders are made with love. She even puts the sauce on the side if you're bringing a grinder home and love a distance so that it doesn't get soggy. So thoughtful. Never had a place do that. It just goes to show that she cared about the quality. I brought a chicken parm grinder home to my husband. Who is Italian and grew up with home made delicious cutlets. When eating his dinner he said, "These may be the best chicken cutlets I've ever had." Highly recommend“
“I was surprised when we got there, looks like a super typical town-y pizza place tucked in a somewhat dingy plaza. The inside is bright, clean, and not at all what I expected. The service was friendly and very fast. There was a steady stream of patrons but staff kept up well, all seemed to be having a good time. The meatballs in vodka sauce were delicious. Fettuccini Carbonara was flavorful and well balanced. I personally would have had more sauce, but I will just request that for next time. Ravioli are huge and generously stuffed. Highly recommended for a high quality Italian experience in an unassuming location.“

Ordering online doesn't work since its hard to customize pizzas and ots a 10 minute longer wait minimum. We got 2 pizzas for pick up ordered over the phone. 1st the girl was handling more than one phone at a time so not really knowing if we had her full attention. 2nd we ordered the oozy egg no proscute with an extra egg instead. there was no proscute but also no extra egg and the eggs were on only half the pizza. my hubby asked for a side of red pepper flakes they gave him .5oz, kind of stingy. the 2 pizzas came to $38+ and at that price they could at least pay attention and get the order right. Even if they might have been busy, at least do a quality check or read the order back to the customer so it is right.“

For me, I wanted to visit a new town in CT and pick a place to eat. I'm glad I chose AJ's. When you walk in the main section is set up for takeout with a plexiglass view behind the counter where the pizza is made. To the right is the main seating area if you are choosing to dine in. The seating is casual and has a home like an American diner vibe. If you are looking for good Italian at good price, AJ's is your place. Their menu contains all your standard Italian dishes for dine in and takeout as well as pizza and grinders. The menu is a two-sided page, and there is a separate special sheet given as well. Although I love me some standard Italian dishes, after reading some reviews, I knew that was either going for their grinders or taking a chance on their specials. Welp folks, special it was. They had 3 that week, and I chose to try their Chicken Andouille. This dish consisted of a creamy sauce with chicken, Andouille sausage, capers, and squash mixed into penne pasta. Wow. Delicious. The spicy kick to the sausage gave it a creamy heat, and I loved the nice touch of capers and crunchiness of the squash. The squash was cooked but not overcooked (sometimes it can get mushy, but not the case here). When we went today, the inside was quiet. Just a few tables had people. That's okay with me. It allows me to relax a bit as I eat and enjoy the food. The server was great. She was all smiles and bringing us everything in a timely fashion. If you are driving through Higganum and need a place to grab a lunch or dinner at a reasonable price, check out AJs. You won't regret it.“

And it tasted almost as good. I felt like I got thick crust on this pizza instead of normal though. Maybe they just have one style of crust and advertised incorrectly? Either way it tasted great so I wouldn't complain much.The bacon/meatball was just alright. They cube their meatball pieces but I didn't get much flavor from them. The bacon was flavorful though and overall it was good enough to eat.I would recommend getting extra cheese or something to add a little grease to the pizza as the dough was a bit dry (though flavorful).I only got take out but the environment was great and seemed like a perfect spot for locals to return to regularly. I would go back but probably stick to the pepperoni personally.“
