“This place is within walking distance from my house, so I decided to check it out tonight. The menu is small but the food was good and it was quite busy when we left. I took my daughter, who is 16. It was fine for her, but I wouldn't recommend taking a younger child there.“

This German restaurant is located in Lincoln Park, close to the famous Lake Shore trails and steps from the DePaul University campus.Himmel's transports you to a cozy Bavarian village amid the big city hustle and bustle. Stepping inside, I was greeted by the aromas of grilled sausages, sauerkraut and soft pretzels. The dark wood paneling and decorative plates on the walls added to the authentic vibe.We sat down and were promptly served heaping portions of classic German fare. I opted for the jägerschnitzel, a pork cutlet smothered in mushroom gravy. It was tender and flavorful, seriously satisfying my appetite on the windy Chicago evening. With every bite, I swore I heard a "Prost!" My dining companions raved about the spätzle and sausages.The friendly staff made us feel right at home. Our server was knowledgeable about all the Bavarian beer selections. I enjoyed a malty Doppelbock myself.After our fill of food and drink, it was time to explore more of Chicago. “Family owned, food is homemade and delish! Salad with house dressing has always been my fave. Been going here for over 45 years. Try the schnitzel, potato pancakes, brats, leberkase....everything is great! Beer garden in the back is the icing on the cake!“
“Good but horrible service. The food and drink were amazing, but the service was so slow. It took over 25mins for us to get our beers after we ordered. We then had friends show up and they didn't get their order taken till 30 mins after they got in, and then they had to wait another 20mins for their drink. The place was busy, but still several tables open.“

“This is a historic German restaurant in Chicago and specializes both in comfort food and comfort atmosphere. We visited here during Christmas time, and the whole place was decked. The children could play games while the adults enjoyed good food. I ordered an oxtail and tasted their steak, and both were delicious. We had a party of 20 and had our own room booked with our own Christmas tree.“
