“Delectable, Dynamic, and Down to earthWhen you first walk into Warda Patisserie, you are delighted by the salivating smells wafting from the kitchen and the delectable arrangements of pastries, leading your eyes (and stomach) further into the shop.Feasting first, with the eyes, you will notice that the flavor combinations on the pastries are out-of-the-ordinary (with a flavor to match). For example, Ube Flan, Yuzu Mousselline, and Mango Black Sesame Financiers, to name a few. I asked the staff about the inspiration for the flavors and was informed of Warda Bouguettaya's global pastry education. I even had the opportunity to meet her, as she was standing right behind me! For being an award-winning, critically acclaimed chef, her humility and centeredness spoke loudly!I was eager to try these treats and chose an item she recommended: her Ube Flan. It was an excellent balance of flavor, not too sweet, adorned with toasted coconut, and an excellent start to my Saturday. Also, the space, although intimate and close-quarters, was not loud for a Saturday morning. Every table was filled, but people were quick to enjoy their pastries and then get on with the rest of their day. With a friendly and knowledgeable staff, Warda's Patisserie should be a must-go if you are looking for delicious treats, a good way to start the weekend, or an excuse to treat yourself. Anyway, if you are looking for a superb bakery then look no further.“

The process to order was extremely hassle free. I got response very fast and I requested some last minute additions to the design. I received such a lovely cake with some polar bears and snowflakes since I had mentioned that it was a winter and polar bear themed shower. I appreciate how thoughtful you were and how easy you made the entire process for someone like me ordering from out of the state. And yes, the flavor was amazing. The cake was the star of our event. I'm only did the original sweet potato pie minis (2/$8) and it was so good. The pie filling itself but that crust was so delicious. Buttery and smooth. Now the surprise of surprise... the soul food special. I got the salmon croquettes and honey I was instantly transported to my mother's kitchen. I haven't had croquettes in about 15 yrs. The sides were the perfect accessory. I took two bites in the car and had to call them before hitting the road to let them know it was just that good. Do yourself a favor and go here. Now! “Omg the reviews do not do this place justice!!! Let me start off with the warm greetings they give when you walk in. So nice. Then the amazing smells that hit you as soon as you walk in. Fantastic! I got the lemon bar, the chocolate chip cookie, a breakfast sandwich and a kale salad with chicken. The lemon bar was so delicious, with a perfect crust, and creamy inside, I ate the whole thing while waiting for my sandwich. The cookie was great as well. The sandwich which they told me was put on bread they bake in house was absolutely delicious. Great crunch, eggs and the other ingredients inside tasted so yummy. The salad tastes fresh and not soggy. The chicken is served cold, but still really good with no weird after taste. Everything was a 10/10 I totally recommend this spot if you’re downtown. I’m in school down here and the service was quick enough for me to order, and still make it with plenty of time to get back to class. I will definitely be back daily. I’m praying I get my clinical’s close by so I can come back after this class term.“

They have this dense white ball pastry that I crave late at night sometimes lol, and I'm not too crazy about the raisins that are baked in, but the layer of cream in the middle and the white, sugary coating on the outside are to die for ?? “With the devastating closure of my beloved Dutch Girl Donuts, National Bakery has some pretty big wooden clogs to fill and it's done so admirably even if it never will have quite the same iconic status in my mind. (Dutch Girl is supposed to reopen at some still undetermined point with the original recipes being passed down along with the building so if it rises like a phoenix maintaining its previously exemplary standards then consider this review a 4.5 so Dutch Girl maintains its status as Top Dog.) The outside of the building is pretty bare bones but they get automatic respect for holding it down on a desolate commercial strip lacking any other businesses on one of Detroit's mile-and-a-half roads, E. State Fair. Hand painted Plain blue block letters announce the name of the business along with the 5am - 5pm hours. The word NATIONAL is on separate white board affixed to the facade of the building so it originally said simply BAKERY and there's more space between the E and N of OPEN than between the N and the 5 that begins their hours. A coffee cup accompaniment, the only graphic is a simple outline. A more complete filled in coffee cup graces a diagonal wall on the corner of the building that covers where a doorway used to be. It reads HOT CUP COFFEE. I don't know why Yelp has National Bakery listed in Highland Park, a "suburb" surrounded entirely by Detroit, abutted kitty corner by Hamtramck, which is in the exact same situation. National Bakery is in Detroit proper, a whole mile and half north of the Highland Park border and east of it as well. If you're driving around near any of the cities you can instantly tell which one you're in by the street signs. Detroit's are green with white letters and Highland Park and Hamtramck have blue signs with white letters. But that's neither here nor there... My maiden voyage to National Bakery, only undertaken once Dutch Girl had shuttered, was a bit rough. The two ladies in back were having a loud argument and I only got the attention of the one by tapping my key on the glass counter. Fortunately, in several visits since there hasn't been a repeat of anything like that. It's $4.80 for a half dozen donuts and just shy of ten bucks for a dozen. They're pretty delicious, even if they don't practically melt in your mouth like Dutch Girls used to. (I had a co-worker tell me once that he thought Dutch Girl Donuts were too soft which I disagree with but I have to respect. I think National Bakery would probably meet his standard, though.) I've never tried anything but the donuts here. The coffee looks good but coffee has been upsetting my stomach lately so I've basically cut it out. They do have a fridge with sodas and juices. There's also other baked goods like cupcakes and cookies. This is a true old school mom and pop hole in the wall and though it might not have the cool branding and quite as much charm as Dutch Girl it's pretty awesome on its own. Honestly, it's maybe unfair of me to try to hold National Bakery to that standard but I just can't help myself. Yelp isn't known for being the most objective place after all.“
