“We had a chance to dine here twice during our visit to the Big Island in February 2024. On our first visit, we had great food, drinks, and service. To top it all off, they even provided a wonderful sunset! Although the depth of the menu was rather small, we all found something on the menu we liked. The food was well portioned. Our second meal was just as good as our first, although without the sunset. On a side note, I was very disappointed that the clothing did not come in 3XL.“
“Delicious food, served quickly and convenient phone menu and ordering. Fun selection of island birds hanging around, if you are a birder or animal lover. Great place to see the rosy cheeked love birds that live on the island. Bottomless coffee would have been nice!“
“First off, the food was really delicious! My only suggestion is to add more vegetarian options. Second, the service was just okay. The waitstaff were personable, but slow. Food did come out pretty fast though. I ordered a pizza, which was huge and so good (my mouth is watering as I type this!) but didn't get a separate plate to place my slice of pizza on-ate it right from the serving platter. I had every intention to take the leftovers home, but my husband saw my enjoyment of the tasty goodness and slammed the rest down his skinny little gullet! I'd definitely eat there again, probably just take out next time.“
“Solid, if not spectacular, spot for local seafood meal. The spearfish Hawaiian style was flavorful, even if portion was a bit small. Seafood fried rice had nice variety and delicious. Coconut shrimp pupu a bit overdone but nice coconut dipping sauce.Parking: Easiest place to park is on top level in the back, since you enter on second story of establishment.“
“This place is huge, and the food is pretty good. I had a Caesar salad and their garlic butter filet mignon bites. Hubby had the Baja Fresh fish tacos. This place is part of the theater next door. Food was great, outdoor atmosphere, TVs in the restaurant. Service was attentive. Would return.“
“Hale Kai is all about the ocean views, but the food makes it worth whatever wait you will have. First time there, we enjoyed the chicken tacos and grilled swordfish sandwich, both delicious. Later in our stay, the grilled ono and hamburger were solid if not spectacular. Had to end up vacation with Kona Coffee Mud Pie -- oh my was it exceptionally tasty!!“
“Food was very good however the mai frozen tai cocktail was forgettable and expensive . It was one on the poorest I've had. The hula dancer was excellent and the music was good. The ambience was excellent. That alone made the dinner worth it.“
“My wife and daughter accompanied me to Johnny's for lunch. My wife and I specifically went for corned beef and cabbage on Saint Patrick's day while my daughter, who lives in Hawaii had a braised beef sandwich. The food and service was top notch. Our corned beef came with cabbage of course and small white potatoes, carrots and a green. My daughter's sandwich came with homemade potato chips. It turned out she liked my potatoes better, so I ate her chips and she ate my potatoes and carrots. The chips were perfectly fried and had very little salt. I stopped eating when they were gone. Our waitress brought us a breakfast menu when we were done eating and it looks great. We intend to go back for breakfast before we return home. I hope that we get the same waitress because she was wonderful.Dietary restrictions: Some gluten free items on menu .Kid-friendliness: Restaurant tends to be open air on a golf course.“
