After becoming extremely sick and hospitalized early this year from visiting Zai’s Dessertery in Bergenfield and forcing myself to eat disgusting, stone hard, and sugar packed desserts, due to not being able to get my money back from the cashier, Athens Bakery has been a great find for sure. “Food is delicious here, always fresh and in good quantity, however prices have continued to go up since I first started going there and also with ordering takeout/delivery. Sometimes just ordering a Greek salad and a gyro, when all is said and done it's nearing $50. I know prices are up everywhere, but some things don't warrant such a jump in price. And definitely shouldn't stay at that price for the long term. Hoping prices will come down as food prices begin to improve.“
“Recently, my wife and I discovered Symposium, a hidden gem in North Manhattan, while driving home. Its Greek sign beckoned us into an experience reminiscent of the cozy taverns in Athens, where entering feels like stepping into a secret cave or basement. Celebrating Greece’s Independence Day and the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25th, we were delighted by the traditional dishes that paid homage to these significant events, much like the celebrations back home in Greece.The highlight of our meal was the cod with garlic spread (μπακαλιάρο σκορδαλιά), a signature dish for the day, embodying the essence of Greek tradition. Our feast also included crispy octopus, kalamarakia, French fries sprinkled with feta, shrimp saganaki, a refreshing Greek salad, authentic Greek coffee, portokalopita, and the sublime galaktoboureko. Each dish transported us to Greece with its authentic flavors, as if homemade.Accompanied by a “Savvatiano” crisp, cold white Greek wine, served in an ice bucket to maintain its chill, the dining experience was elevated. We talked it through from beginning to end and he politely provided his recommendations based on what I said I liked EVEN down to which dressing to choose so as not to combine too many salty flavors based on my other choices. Not bad at all but compared to the appetizers (fried calamari and zucchini are exceptional), it's slightly disappointing. And the rice was undercooked. The sweet-and-sour sauce that accompanies it is simply divine. And to make it even better, their white sauce is the perfect addition. The service here is top-notch, with friendly staff who always go above and beyond to make sure you have a great experience. I usually pick up my order from their convenient location on Third Avenue, and it's great that there's a Starbucks just across the street where I can grab a coffee to complete my meal.“
