“We’ve been coming to Pho Nam in Progress Ridge for years, and it’s always a wonderful experience. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and authentic—truly some of the best Vietnamese cuisine around.

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and the service is always kind, attentive, and warm. It’s also very family-friendly, which makes it one of our go-to spots with kids. Each of my children has their own favorite dish here, and we’ve never been disappointed.

​I came here specifically looking for beef stew and was absolutely blown away. Phở Nguyên is a true family-run hidden gem that serves a dish of exceptional quality.
​The Dish (Bò Kho - Beef Stew):
I ordered the Bò Kho with Mì (egg noodles). The meat was, without exaggeration, the most tender I have ever had in a restaurant. This quality was exceeded only by the sheer quantity; there were at least six huge, incredibly tender chunks, easily eight to twelve ounces total. It was clearly a high-quality cut, either beef shank or brisket, braised to beyond perfection. It was so soft it simply fell apart, exhibiting a mastery of slow-cooking.
​The technical execution extended to every component, which is so hard to achieve in a stew. The carrot was bright orange, firm yet tender, and maintained its powerful, distinct carrot flavor-a sign of perfect timing, as it never absorbed the beef flavor. Likewise, the potato was flawlessly cooked; firm enough not to be mushy, yet soft. This incredible balance demonstrates true culinary mastery.
​The Experience:
The care and tradition here are obvious. I initially sat toward the back and noticed a slight cleaning scent (I am extremely sensitive to chemical smells, so others may not notice it). The staff was extremely accommodating when I asked to move seats, and the issue was completely forgotten and masked by the incredible aroma of the Bò Kho when it arrived. The service was warm, provided by family members who clearly take pride in their work.
​If you are looking for authentic, unforgettable Vietnamese cuisine, this place is essential. The Bò Kho is a transformative meal.

“I visited this restaurant for the 1st time today with my mother (she's been here before) and my cousin (1st time visitor). As soon as we walked through the door we were greeted and seated (they were packed with people (@ 11 am) so I thought we would have a wait time but to my surprise we didn't. Both our greeter and waiter was asked several questions about the menu and both people were extremely polite about answering all questions. Our drinks and food came out in a timely manner. We ordered beef pho, french toast and chicken wings with fries. Everyone was happy with how everything tasted, very flavorful (the chicken could use some salt, but it was still good). I love how they put water in a nice tall glass on the tables for us to pour as we need it, that was different, I don't normally see that in restaurants I've visited. At the end of our time here, the manager stopped by our table to make sure we were good and that we enjoyed ourselves, she answered my mother's questions and was very nice. That was a nice touch to our visit and left me with a smile. I will be back for sure to try other items on the menu that caught my eyes. Great place and the atmosphere was really pleasant.“

“Had a friend visiting and were discussing what to eat for lunch, I suggested bahn mi sandwiches, to which since never having one, she was rather “meh”. After telling her how they’re nothing like boring American sandwiches, she agreed to give one a try. We were up at Mt. St. Helens, so I had some time to tell her how they were a staple where I grew up(Bay Area) and how great the last one I had a few years ago in Hawai’i was. Anyway, we finally arrive and having never been here previously, were super impressed with the layout and the vibe of the place. We both ordered pork belly sammys and an order of wontons. It was great to see the look on her face when she took the first bite, her eyes lit up and a smile followed. She now knew the culinary joy I had in my younger years. This place is funky and cozy in the best of ways, and the food is spot on and joyous the senses, plus the staff are super friendly and awesome! I live nowhere near this place(I’m in Canby) and would have no problem traveling here for another taste. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed!!!!!“

“Pho is one of those comfort foods that taste best when it's cold outsid. This place felt clean and bright, and was a little busy during the lunch rush hour. I ordered chicken pho and it was good but not especially notable. At $16 for the meal, it felt a little on the expensive side but it seems like every place does that now.“

“I've only been here about 4 times (not in NW area often) but it is hands down one of my favorite bars in Portland proper. Every staff member I've encountered has been friendly and helpful with recs. If it's not too busy they'll also tell us process if making some of their unique flavors. As busy as it gets I have never felt rushed out. The bar snacks are from upstairs and pairs great with the Vietnamese theme of the cocktails (spring rolls and salad rolls are great). It's a small space so I'd say it's better for groups of 2-3. I've never made reservations but have gotten very lucky the times I've been, where the hostess squeezed an extra chair at bar and politely asked if a couple next to us would move one seat down that was open.

“A hidden gem for beef pho! This is my favorite pho I’ve had in Portland. The noodles are always fresh and bouncy, broth is savory (not sweet) and delicious, and meats are of good quality. The broth is well balanced with warming spices (some places in town go way too hard on the warming spices which is not my fav). It’s never been packed when I go in for lunch but the food has always tasted very fresh and restaurant is clean. They have a $15 lunch special for all phos. Highly recommend if you need a bowl of pho!“
