White Palace Grill 1159 S Canal St, Chicago Diner • $

“Good day my Foodzies, recently Glenda and I visited the White Palace Grill on Roosevelt and Canal. This restaurant has been around since 1937, and it's open 24 Hours. When you walk in you are reminded of an old school diner with the red and white vinyl chairs and booths and a large counter complete with swivel stools also adorned with red vinyl. We received a warm welcome upon entering and were instructed to sit wherever we liked. We chose the back seating area so as to avoid the sun. This restaurant is riddled with Chicago nostalgia photos of sports figures, mayor Daley as well as numerous renderings of Chicago icon (Harry Carrey, Walter Payton, Michael Jordan, Mike Ditka and even Walt Disney) from floor to ceiling. The restaurant was clean and well kept, Our server was Edna she was very polite and accommodating. We both had wraps Glenda had the Southwest chicken and I chose the Philly cheesesteak both in a spinach wrap. Unfortunately they were both under seasoned. The highlight was the coleslaw and the crinkle fries. I give this restaurant 4 stars most because of the nostalgia. I recommend this restaurant as a Chicago experience. Try it out and let me know how you like it. Ciao Ciao for now.”

“Food was great, but service was lacking.Wait was quite long on the weekend, but that was expected. If I were to go again, I'd probably bring my own latte for the line, ha. But the maiz con leche was everything I hoped it would be. The longanisa was superb. I couldn't identify the spices, but it had such a different balance than what I'm used to in Latin cuisine. They have an odd ordering/seating system where you order at the front, pay, but then they don't sit you for a while, then they sit you, then they bring you out your food. They came by 4 times during our brunch to tell us that they couldn't find our lattes in the system. Not once did they ask what the lattes were. They eventually brought out the lattes as we were just finishing our meals (and obviously found them in the system since they brought out the right ones). Since we already tipped, I guess no incentive to do anything about the poor service. They didn't comp the lattes, they didn't bring out a little dessert, etc. like you might see in a any other restaurant.Obviously they need to make the ticketing system more accessible to their waiters or train them on it better.”

S.K.Y. 1239 W 18th St, Chicago American • $$$

“Higher end cuisine than I'd expected in Pilsen. You've got to admit, the neighborhood is changing, and hip restaurants are not rare there these days. We had good service, excellent wine available, and we made some really great choices. Nearly everything we ordered was excellent in our group of five. Glad we did the shared plates approach. The cornbread madeleines were so delicious, we ordered some to take home for coffee time the next morning. Another highlight was a mushroom dish. All of the vegetables focused selections were excellent. Our beef and fish choices were fine, but not as impressive. I wasn't a fan of the truffle oil dessert, but honestly it reminded me that my palate isn't as sophisticated as some others' are. What I expected was different than what we received. I tried it anyway, and it was too much umami and charred/burnt flavors. It tasted like it looked, so I know it was me, not the kitchen. We'd ordered several other desserts, and I loved all the others. I was more disappointed in myself that I didn't like it. Good decor, fits in well with the intended vibe. We found it somewhat noisy; perhaps if the (cool) music was turned down by half, it would be more conducive to friendly conversation. Lighting was a bit dim but not bad. Definitely have been recommending S.K.Y. They are inventive and enthusiastic. There's some room for improvement but I believe it will be truly great.”

Osteria Via Stato 620 N State St, Chicago Italian • $$

“Wow! We arrived a little early for our Saturday at 7:30 dinner reservations in hopes of getting seated early, if there was a chance. It was restaurant week in Chicago Osteria was very busy. Unable to get a table early, we happily sat at the bar and waited. After debating on what drinks to order, we opted for the "just bring me wine" . The bartender asked if we were having the restaurant week menu, as that had specific wines to go with the courses (which is what we went with). We were seated a little after 7:30, no complaints on my part over that, as they were very busy. When a place is participating in an event such as restaurant week and there is a set menu, one shouldn't expect any substitutions from said set menu. I completely understand this, although having to eat gluten free poses a bit of an issue for me. The options for the main course of the set menu wasn't going to be a problem for me. I inquired about the ingredients on the first course. I knew the bread and roasted garlic, as well as the meatballs were a no go for me and explained that I couldn't eat the prepared salad due to the croutons. Much to my glee, I was offered a caprese salad instead of the Caesar. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the bread with roasted garlic in oil and vinegar, as well as the meatballs and Caeser salad. The soup was a delicious chicken and vegetable soup. At 8:10 started to get nervous about the time, due to us having tickets to see Drunk Shakespeare at 9pm. This was poor timing on my part, I should have reserved our table for 7pm or earlier not 7:30pm. When our waiter came over to check on us I explained that we needed to put out by 8:30(ish). Mild concern came over his eyes and he went back to check in at the kitchen. Moments later, a gentleman came to our table (I'm assuming the manager) to discuss our predicament. He kindly explained that our main course wasn't going to be ready for another 20 minutes (the restaurant was very busy). The timing would have been just fine any other night for us, but not that night. After a discussion with the manager, we all came to an agreement of us having a second bowl of soup and paying ala carte for what we had eaten and forgoing the set menu. I take full responsibility for our poor timing and am delighted in how the restaurant was gracious and accommodating. Our waiter brought over two glasses of chocolate wine to finish off our meal. The food was outstanding and the service was even better. Next time we are in Chicago, I'll make sure to set enough time aside to enjoy the full eating experience.”

“Ada Street was a phenomenal Chicago restaurant experience. My friends and I had a last minute cancellation that we decided to turn into a walk-in later that evening. Deliste the late hour, the chef, hostesses, and bartenders greeted us warmly and treated us with hospitable warmth. The food was diverse in palette and flavor, but cohesive. It never tasted as if it had sat under a warmer for any time, and it as cooled to perfected. The doughnuts was the sleeper dish, closer to a churro, but in a good way. 10/10 recommend.”

“Truly enjoyed the Puttery experience! We came in on a Saturday during St. Patrick’s day weekend. Fortunately, Ryan advised us to come during a time in which we can enjoy the game and the ambiance. The restaurant/bar area on the 2nd floor was great for eating and obtaining our amazing drinks. They have some of the best mixed drinks in West Loop! The BBQ on Saturday Night was my favorite. We took our drinks to the 3rd floor in the lounge/bar to have a nice, cozy conversation before the game. The patio had some great views of West Loop.We took to the holes when we were all warmed up for our mini golf session. Although the 3rd floor course had flatter and more adventurous areas, the 2nd floor course was more intimate and challenging. There can only be up to 4 people in a traveling group though. My date and I ended up having a fun time.I want to thank Ryan, the manager, for helping to make this a memorable experience. We will be back soon with friends.”

Marina's Bistro and Rum Bar 4554 N Magnolia Ave, Chicago Puerto Rican • $$

“I’ve been twice, once to dine in and the other to dine out. The restaurant itself is a great space. It’s small enough to feel intimate and quiet. Both times I’ve had the pastelillos de carne, lechón, y arroz con gandules. The food is SOOOO good! I’m a Puertorriqueño originally from NYC (South Bronx) and Puerto Rican food was not just plentiful at home but in the community. Since moving to the Midwest (first Nebraska, the Minnesota, and now Illinois) I’ve usually had to hope for cuisines that were proximal but not Puerto Rican (Colombian, Venezuelan, Cuban, etc.). Chicago has obviously been much better as it relates to Puerto Rican options but of all the ones I’ve tried to date (within and beyond Humboldt Park) Marina’s takes the prize for feeling most like a home cooked meal. The food is so flavorful. The portions are just right. It may be a bit pricier than some peers but honestly it’s worth it. So glad to have a place much closer to my home in Rogers Park.”

We tried the 12oz Picanha steak, the Moqueca (fish stew), and the grilled chicken (which was the least Brazilian choice). “GREAT food. Really love the portions, choices, and variety. Easier to understand than some of the other bowl restaurants (looking at you Sweet Green across the street). But wooooow, prepare yourself for one of the longest waits of your life. Go during off-hours or order for pickup. It looks like pickup is the reason the restaurant line is long as they appear to be prioritized.UPDATE: Pickup is worse. The food sits on a cart behind the counter with no one really assigned to give them to customers. We ordered at 7:30 (earliest pickup was 8:45!). After waiting until 9, we started looking through the bags (super awkward). Ours was the first one. Just sitting there.”
