“If you're in the neighborhood or staying overnight or just taking a tour of Nottoway, the largest antebellum plantation house in the South, be sure to make time for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Mansion Restaurant at Nottoway. Resident chef Johnny "Jambalaya" Percle has assembled a classic Louisiana cuisine inspired by old Creole recipes. Located at 31025 Highway 1 in White Castle, Louisiana, overlooking the Mississippi River, Nottoway offers an experience you don't want to pass up. Enjoy a meal in a beautifully restored turn-of-the-century dining room with stunning views of century-old oak trees. There are 16 majestic oaks spread across the 31-acre property, the oldest estimated to be 162 years old, the same age as the mansion. Weather permitting, outdoor dining also is available on the curved second floor balcony of the Rotunda, which offers a sweeping view of Nottoway's beautiful grounds. For breakfast, browse the buffet for assorted breads, cold cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, homestyle grits, hash browns, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles and buttermilk biscuits. For lunch, my wife and I started with chicken and sausage gumbo and grilled chicken salad with mixed greens, grape tomatoes, black olives, feta cheese, tortilla chips and balsamic vinaigrette. For a main course, my wife chose a Reuben sandwich with hot corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and 1,000 Island dressing grilled on marble rye. I opted for BBQ shrimp and grits with Louisiana jumbo Gulf shrimp, stone ground grits, andouille sausage and BBQ butter. If we had been able to stay for dinner, we would have started with ordered chicken and sausage gumbo, Creole turtle soup, Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese, croutons and creamy Caesar dressing, a bone-in ribeye with herb roasted fingerling potatoes and creamed spinach, Colorado roast rack of lamb served with dijon and oregano sauce, Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and fresh broccoli, Miss Sharon's house-made white chocolate bread pudding topped with creme anglaise and caramel sauce and classic creme brulee with French vanilla custard topped with caramelized sugar and garnished with fresh berries. Certainly a restaurant worthy of such a magnificent tourist attraction.“
