“Reverse tape two months, it was during my drive south to the Sarasota area of Florida, my current living situation. I do not recall the signage upon the highways blue boards that tell of gas, food and lodging, those signs have changed over the years and seemingly mainly advertise only the big burger guys.I reckon it was just past 3:00am when I exited the interstate and after a quick loop de loop I got all excited to see the yellow and black sign of Waffle House. It's become a comforting place for me as redneck as that may sound - South Carolina kicked off that trend by way of late nights with a newly met hussie, breakfast with my son, or just me and my thoughts and newspapers.Maximum Overdrive rigs all around, some snooze some sleep some sort out their trip- I took a seat at a table in the rear. Coffee always is served quickly and my order never never really changes "All Star, pecan waffle, Sunnyside up with bacon, grits and extra butter".But the eggs came out rubbery and bouncy scrambled, I had thoughts of silky textures. As I played with it with my fork questioning my ability to resurrect them, I caught a movement outside and entering quickly through the double doors.A heavy coated screaming man entered. He was certainly unstable, ranting and raving and seemed quite insane. He wasn't the type to be packing a heater as I assessed him up and down while not looking up with my I Can Spot Danger NYC lense. I've dealt with many people in far worse areas than this wiry fellow, so I nonchalantly slipped my hand in my front right pocket and fitted into my brass knuckles while eating and reading and listening, but nothing really came if it and in minutes the police arrived on scene. It's true that my order was incorrect, it's true the early mornings live entertainment was less than Carnegie Hall material, but the politeness of the staff is much appreciated when your a stranger in a strange land, hungry and have been cranking out the miles by the hundreds.“

“Excellent little old school truck stop Mom and Pop cafe. I have had both lunch and breakfast here once or twice. The ladies are always on point and friendly. I never felt any sideways looks. The food is so much better than your big chain fast food restaurants. I will always stop in when in the area.“

“This restaurant is located at the Kenly truck stop off Rt. 95 in NC. We live locally and my wife and I come here often for lunch. The food is always good and well prepared. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. I drink tea by the gallons and they're always on spot refilling our glass's. For OTR truckers this has to be a breath of fresh air to find a place to park and sit down to a hot home cooked meal.“

“The best hidden gem around! Ms. Irene is the sweetest,& the food is ALWAYS great. I have had mostly everything she offers & it never disappoints! The amount of food you get on the plate is definitely worth the price for some good southern home-cooked food. Her cakes and pies are always amazing. Make sure to get some collards or cabbage to. Either call your order ahead of time or be prepared to wait. Mostly everything they cook is made to order. She does have specials every day and specific things already prepared, but they are usually busy. You will not be disappointed! Highly recommend“

“The Best Dawg In Town is the slogan for Pikeville Dawg House. Its a really small town. As such, the slogan shoots way below the actual quality of the hot dog. It could be one of the best hot dogs in the state based on my experience. The hot dog chili was very good. Very inexpensive. Outdoor picnic tables were convenient.“

First Brew Bar • $
110 Goldsboro St, Pikeville - 10.56 miles

“Located in a strip mall with a hardware store on one side and a connected grill/restaurant on the other, you don't want to miss this local brewery. It's larger than it appears with a comfortable lounge area with lots of seating in the front and a bar in the back. Be sure to check out the door--now table bejeweled with bottle caps. It's a work of art! Beer and wine only. Wine is sold by in bottles. A nice variety of many different types of reds and whites available at a moderate price point. You can also order wine slushies served frozen and sweet. First Brew is best known for its beer selection. They have 16 rotating flavors on tap. Flights are available for sampling or you can choose your favorites in 10 ounce or 16 ounce pours in real glassware. Other beer options include bottles and cans available in the cooler. The majority of their beers are craft beers brewed locally in North Carolina. Look for unique sours and ciders. There are other options, including domestic beers available.A menu for John's Grill is available and you walk into the adjoining room to place your order. While you pay next door when you order, they do hand deliver to First Brew. Fried garlic cheese curds are a tasty side to cold beer. The manager was our bartender, and did a great job taking care of us and answering all of our questions. She was friendly and efficient and working hard! The day we visited was cool out so no one was on the back deck. Outdoor seating, barbecue grills, and corn hole look to be popular activities. Check out the fence with lots of signs and interesting decor.First Brew is worth the stop! I'm excited to be the first to review First Brew and hope other Yelpers will support this local business too.“
