We've rounded up South Amboy's top Mexican spots for you to try.
“Depending on the staff working, the experience can differ. One person in particular is always on the phone or gossiping with coworkers instead of helping customers at the counter. The other is a gentleman and is always tentative to the customers. Food is okay for what it is.“
“Run don't walk to La Hacienda Restaurant. It's a small place, but big on flavor and excellent service.Complimentary fresh made chips with 4 different salsas were brought out as we were greeted by our sever. We started with Guacamole con Tostones, the guacamole was creamy and delicious Tostones crispy and still soft in the center. Presentation was awesome, see photos. We also shared a flaky beef empanada that was simple but so good. For dinner I had Beef Birria Tacos and my wife ordered a Beef Birria Bowl with rice and beans. Both of these were to die for. Excellent flavor and generous portions.I wanted to try the tres leches that looked so moist in the counter window but I didn't save any room. We're already planning our next trip back to try the other delicious choices on their menu, and I'm going to try and save room for dessert.“
“We went here with a friend. The kitchen was a bit loud like someone was banging pots. Decor is pretty sparse, we were the only people there on a Saturday evening. The tacos are good, don't expect any sort of side like beans or rice. Everything on the menu is less than $15 so expect the experience to line up accordingly.“
“I have ordered from there several times and everything has been great. I decided to try their catering for a party of 10. The food was excellent. The price was great and the portions could have fed 15 or more. I will definitely use them to cater in the future.“
“Ordered food for a family party and EVERYONE at the party loved the food. They delivered the food to our home and couldn’t have been nicer. I had never even eaten there before and decided to support a local business and I’m so glad that I did. The food was absolutely amazing and everything was fresh. HIGHLY “
“Beautiful and elegant Mexican restaurant. Food and drinks were delicious and on point. Reservations are required, especially during the weekend. We only got in because we sat at the bar. Regardless, we got great service, food, and drinks. If you like corn, the corn flan was absolutely amazing and delicious!! Out of this world!! - It was the highlight for me. We definitely want to go back and experience dining in. Restaurant is perfect for birthday celebrations or any other special event. Highly recommended ?“
“Best Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to. Everything is amazing. This genre is so weak in NJ, but this place is the real deal. You know the place is authentic when you see actual Mexicans coming here regularly. Great staff too, very welcoming and warm.“
“Had such a great breakfast here today. The red velvet waffles were delicious as was the latte I ordered. My daughter had the huevos rancheros which she said was really good. My niece had the eggs Benedict which she said was cooked perfectly. Such a nice cafe with friendly staff. Will definitely be back!Kid-friendliness: They had high chairs available.“
“I tried their birria tacos when they first opened (1-2 years ago), and they were good but I remember the tacos were on the smaller side compared to others I've had (e.g. Chofi in Union). Granted, they were a new restaurant and I assumed still working out some kinks. In all honesty, I ended up forgetting about this restaurant. I just ordered through Uber eats today, and the tacos were bigger than last time, tasted amazing, and delivered hot. Flavor was on point for the tacos, consome, and green salsa. Happy to add The Birria Kitchen in my rotation of local restaurants!“
“This place is a gem in HP, quaint and charming, hands down, some of the best food I’ve had recently! They use the freshest ingredients and make sure each dish is done the right way. The Tacos al Pastor was especially memorable. Must try!!“
“Our server, Eric, was the absolute best. He steered us the right directions on drinks (all of ours were amazing-- if you're a Mezcal fan, try the smoky marg), was perfectly attentive in checking in on us, and fun to chat with. The food was hot and came out fast despite the restaurant being packed. This is my second time at Tio's, and I'll certainly be back in the future.Vegetarian options: There are several all veggie options that are delicious!Parking: If it's busy, it can be tricky to find parking. I just "bit the bullet" and parked in the lot across the street because I don't mind walking, but those with mobility restrictions might be limited//have to be patient waiting for a spot to open up.“
“Whenever I am in the area, this Mexican deli is my go to stop! Lots of my Mexican restaurant only give three tacos in the order BUT this place does four. It has been years since I found a place that does 4 tacos in a order! 100% recommend the tacos from this place and picadas. The only down part of this place is the dining, there are only a couple of tables and in the weekend it is usually hard to find one. I have been very lucky and have always found a table but I have seen others. The owner of this restaurant shows great hospitality and is attentive to customers.“
“BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT HANDS DOWN!!!! The food was soo good, the mole is definitely handmade and not store bought. The pozole was soo good, very authentic without the extra padding. Picaditas was on spot with the cook time. The beans were also made so well, it was really impressive.Over all, this restaurant is definitely authentic in every sense. The staff was so nice and attentive, the lady that made the food was very humble and kind. It is definitely a hidden gem that needs more exposure.“
“Excellent Mexican food -- best in the area. Restaurant is byob with other solid drink options. Wait staff is great -- I noticed they'll sometimes wait a while to visit after your meal, to ask about desserts/check. But you can flag someone down easily. If ordering take out, give them an extra 15-20 minutes. My order has never been ready on time. But always delicious.“
“If you’re looking for savory food this is is the place. Had to try the menu and it’s been 3 times already jajaja. The tacos are loaded, great prices, the atmosphere is quiet and chill, and the natural juices are great as well. If you’re in the area definitely a must try.“
“These are the BEST quesabirria tacos I have EVER had! They taste like home ?? tacos come with cheese and a very delicious consume. It was not too salty nor too watery, but a perfect consistency. The carne was seasoned to perfection, and it was a nice amount. They were not cheap with the portions! You get 3 nice big tacos. This is definitely a Hidden Gem in the East Coast ! Restaurant is extremely clean and staff is really friendly. You have to give them a try!“
“Been 10 years since I have been here last, but it's still good ol' Tejas. The margaritas still taste great and the chicken Bandera is fantastic. It's nothing fancy on the inside, but I think that's why I like the decor. Staff has always been attentive. I can't wait to go back again.“
“This place is so cute! The decore is great and the lit up corner its on definitely catches your attention. The food...oh the food is delicious! We did take out once and had to go to the restaurant and check it out. We were not disappointed! Family favorite is the burritos! Definitely recommend for dine in or take out.Parking: Parking is limited in the back of the restaurant.Kid-friendliness: My kid ate the food and he's a super picky eater.“
“Love the food, Love the service, Atmosphere, is where ever this truck it at. Love the food, love the service love the people. It is so good we ate lunch with the crew then found them a few towns over and had dinner with them. NOW, where will they be next and for us not to be like a stalker.“
“The kid was craving Mexican food so we searched Yelp and found that this place has good reviews. The photos of the food looked good. We decided to try it. There is no parking lot for this place. There is a Municipal parking lot about one block over behind the post office. We lucked out as there was street parking directly in front of the restaurant. We ordered agua de Jamaica. Huge glass for $4.95. I would guess that it's 16-20 ounces. Gigantic. Well priced. We ordered guacamole which was good too. They didn't give us any salsa for the table like they do at other Mexican joints. For our mains, we ordered their mixed fajitas with shrimp chicken and beef. It was about $21 and it was a huge dish. It's not the usually fajitas that I've had at other places. Theirs comes in a delicious sauce which we thoroughly enjoyed. It was a generous portion and the flavors were on point. We recommend it. Our other dish was the El Rinconcito which came with grilled items: pork cutlets, beef, chicken, shrimps cactus, Spanish cheese rice and beans. It was an alright eight. We prefer the saucy fajita dish more. We def plan to go back. Next time, we are going to order their molcajete which is listed at $34.95 so I assume it'll be a huge dish for two based on the price. From the owners description, it Comes with all kinds of meats steak chicken shrimp pork sausage. I'm trying my best not to go back two days in a row but I may swing by for Lunch later. Good is good as is service. Good came out quick and she asked a few times whether we needed anything else. I believe they give some sort of cash discount or charge to use credit card because she asked how I was paying. They add an auto tip of 15% which I didn't mind. Gave her a few bucks more. All in all, it was a good meal. Appears to be a small mom and pop store and I'm happy to support local small business. It helps that the food is delicious too.“
“Very nice host! Nice place to sit with family and enjoy the authentic food ! It’s not crowded when we went. The food is very well prepared and delicious!!Vegetarian options: There are a lot of veggie options or the restaurant will customize it for you!!“
“Today's Visit, March 28th, 2023Unable to pin ? our current location on Facebook, but Google Maps can, for First Breakfast on the return to Medic Unit #1201 for the start of the 8 week rotation. The Atlantic Bagel Company has a spot just across from the Train Station.Today's sandwich was a Bacon, Egg, Cheese, Jalapeno Peppers on a toasted Hard Roll with SPK...It definitely was delicious and a more reasonable price than one of my sandwiches during the last 2 shift's on Medic Unit #1201...This was a good start on the shift with a uninterrupted meal!!!“
“When it comes to Mexican cuisine, this is the spot where you should spend your money. Small location but suitable for a party of 4. I mean, you just have to make a stop and try for yourself. The price is also great for the food you're getting. Try it out.“
“Today was my first time visiting this establishment. From the moment we walked in we were greeted warmly and seated right away. Our server approached us immediately and was very polite and friendly. We were given chips and salsa that were so fresh and tasty. We ordered our appetizers and drinks and our meals. Everything came out staggered and in a timely fashion. The tortilla soup was to die for. The chicken wings with the dry rub were the best wings I have ever eaten. I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and the rice and beans side dish. The food was so fresh and tasty. The staff were all so polite and attentive. The prices are fantastic. I will definitely be visiting this restaurant again and again. Thanks for the amazing experience.“
“Have had this place multiple times. Boneless wings were very good. Usually get a burrito or bowl either Nashville hot or ghost pepper. I would suggest this place has an alternative for Qdoba Chipotle or moes. Good food is reasonably priced.“
“When I say everything was top notch. I got the fried pickles 10 out of 10, the street corn also a 10 out of 10.To add to my madness I got the shrimp and jerk chicken fajitas. Babbyyyyyyyyy I was so surprised at how it came out. My food came out sizzling and I love it. The toppings were so fresh and so on point. I love this place it’s a new fav for me. 20 out of 20I had a margarita the mi casa is su casa it was so freaking delicious and I got one to go. It was made with casamigos. My first time here and let me just say I will be back. My waiter was sweet and attentive“
“We went to a football experience. They had a football special menu. Mixed Titos for 5 bucks. So we consumed eight on the rocks. Only to find out that on the rocks is full price. This is not properly explained anywhere. Not even from the two bartenders. Who were very nice, but did not help the situation one bit. Thanks a bunch.“
“We've been waiting for this place to open for a while because we haven't found good Mexican in the area. We just tried this place for the first time today and we'll definitely be coming back! Ordered the quesa birria tacos, el pastor tacos, chicken enchiladas, chicken quesadillas, and rice and beans. Everything was really full of flavor! So excited they are opened!“
“Walked in here looking for deli meat and was disappointed to find out they do not provide it, so I just got a sub instead. I was blown away - for the price, the quality and portion is simply incredible. Will be stopping by for lunch more often!“
“First time visit, I have to say this is now my favorite place to eat in rahway. Variety of tacos stuffed generously.Tasty. Salsa also very good served with chips. The cubano sandwich with steak, ham, chorizo, chicken, beans LTO on a roll was fantastic and filling served with skinny seasoned fries. Fajitas mixta was seasoned well and very tasty. Not a hint of pretension surrounds this place. A place to eat good food at a very fair price“
“I recommend giving this place a chance. As a flexitarian (someone who mostly eats plant-based foods, and fish on occasion), I order foods like veggie quesadilla, margherita pizza, churros. They were delicious. The manager/owner and the entire staff are nice and hardworking. I am curious to see if new Mexican cuisine items that are vegetarian/flexitarian will be added in the future.“
“Hi me & my wife stopped in & we had the best experience the best burritos it was better than chipotle & Moe’s with many varieties to choose from meats & sauces the burritos were big & full of goodness everything was fresh great customer service we had the pleasure of meeting the owner he was such a great guy he was so welcoming & he actually work he waited on us 10’s across the board do me a favor & get you some love chips so good you’ll be addicted I wish we had a location in Buffalo Ny we will definitely be back soon thanks again“
“We ordered here on Sunday and loved the homemade guacamole and chips. My husband had the spicy pork tacos and I the enchiladas in green sauce. It was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. I craved it again and ordered on Wednesday evening. This time a gentleman was preparing the food and at the front desk. It was just as delicious, authentic and could taste that the chef took pride in the dishes.“
“I found Felicita on my way home on google map. I had a personal pizza with sausage & peppers. Other than the fact that the dough tasted very salty it was the best sausage & peppers pizza ever! I want to try the Tamale on weekend soon. Maybe cut back on salt in the batter mix?“
“this place is truly great. we ordered a few things and ended up taking most of it home because the soup portions were nice and hefty. everything was flavorful and made when ordered. cannot recommend this place enough. as soon as our soups came out we were shocked at how big the bowls were and how aromatic the soups were. flavors and service were on point. hidden gem 100%“
“Oh my gosh this place is delicious !! This is a must try place . The server was amazing and even the cooks were so nice and smiling from the back :) the food was so delicious !! The guacamole was some of the best I have ever had !! I don’t even like burritos but stole a bite of my boyfriends and it was sooooo good! I had the chicken quesadilla and would highly recommend that too !There is a small kids menu also :)“
“I go on Tuesdays because it's Taco Day and it's a very good promotion but it has a wide assortment of dishes that are just as delicious. I'm Mexican and the Mexican food is not what you expect but this place is good and has great service. I would say wonderful, jovial, they ship quickly and above all, very good service.“
“I’ve been going to Tropico for many years, and it has always been an incredible experience. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. The food is absolutely delicious with generous portions, great flavor, and fair prices. You can tell they put a lot of love and care into their dishes, making it feel like a home cooked meal every time. I have been to other authentic Mexican restaurants closer to my home, but none quite compare to Tropico. I will certainly make the drive here for their top tier quality. Thank you Tropico for many years of great food and service! This restaurant is truly valued in the community.“
“Overall: top place for Authentic Mexican food! Prices are perfect, portions were huge, service was so kind. Food: the sampler was huge and had so much to try! The Birria Tacos were filled! Maybe a little more salt but the sopa was perfect. Churros crunchy and sweet comes with 4 and an ice cream scoop. The chocoflan is a special and they only have it sometimes. If they have it try it! Service: the restaurant owner was so kind and showed us pictures of all the foods. Inside: nice pop Mexican music, originals, and remixes. They also have outside seating.“
“Ordered via a food delivery service close enough to closing time to wonder if I'd regret wasting my money ?but was pleasantly (and thankfully) surprised!Instead of end of the night lack luster food, my flautas were crispy, street corn was ???, chicken tacos were perfect and guac was plentiful (as opposed to the condiment-sized container often used) !Y'all, I was so impressed that I called them today to tell them that I appreciated the quality of the food! I ride past this humble, unassuming establishment all the time not knowing the gem that it is. Will DEFINITELY be ordering again!“
“Had been to an event in Roosevelt ave and saw this shop. I thought it was a regular bottle shop but was surprised once I entered the shop . They had a very good bar to sit and enjoy some beers ? on tap. They also had a DJ kinda guy playing some songs . Good space inside to sit and eat / drink. Amazing service and quick billing . Inside the room, there is a bottle shop with decent collections of beer / wine Etc. parking is a bit tight . Overall a very good shop ????“
“AMAZING!!! Only way to describe it from start to finish! There was a bit of an issue with the printed menu and the online menu. It appears the printed menu is a little out of date and some of the items are not on the website. Perhaps they will either update one or the other.Aside from that, there was a bit of a language barrier when ordering over the phone but nothing horrible. The food was as authentic as you can possibly get. The burritos were flavorful and big. Everything was delicious!!!I would heavily recommend this restaurant.“
“I had the tamales with pork rather than chicken. The sauce was sultry and with just the right amount of heat. The corn shell was perfect and had a wonderful texture. The meal included a small salad and beans and rice. The server was attentive and polite. I would recommend you give it a try!“
“Totally Blown away here.. We had live entertainment. Full Mexican experience. The Queisidias were fresh and flavorful. We has loaded Chicken Tacos and it hit the spot. I would definitely recommend this to all my friends and Followers. If you want a real experience with great food then this is the place to come.“
“It's a nice and authentic restaurant, the food was very delicious, it was a shame that they didn't have soap in restroom, and all the taco sauces were spicy , we wish there was at least one non-spicy sauce, the prices were very good, I recommend “
“This place is great!!! Truly authentic cuisine with plenty of options to choose from. Portions are generous and the staff is friendly. The enchiladas verdes have the right amount of heat(spice) and if you are looking for a spicier option, go with the steak enchiladas verdes! Overall, great quality food.“
“Haven't been here for awhile. The lady prefers the flautas at Taco Stop in South Amboy. I don't recommend that place. Los Corrales IS SO MUCH BETTER! Best Al Pastor I've had in NJ. The burrito is chock full of al pastor, with grilled onions/red peppers and Oaxacan Cheese.$14 included the burrito with Mexican rice and black beans and a bottle of Coke. Excellent deal. There are 3 really good Mexican Restaurants in Keyport. This one is the best of the three! Homemade tortillas ftw!“
“This place has very good potential to be a regular spot. They have the best quesadillas ever. The tacos were alright, to be honest. The meat was rather dry, in my honest opinion, but I feel like it could've just been an off day for them when I tried it.The lady who helped us was absolutely sweet and really took time to get our orders correctly. The birria is good but definitely did not have a good consomé. It was very watery and not rich, and I think that made the birria taste rather plain a bit.But I think it's worth going back again for the chorizo, the quesadillas, and their amazing horchata :)Vegetarian options: Nopales (cactus)HorchataQuesadillas con quesoNachos“
“Great food and great drinks. Chicken Nacos, awesome! Flautas are delicious! The list goes on and on. I highly recommend the Cadillac Margarita! Though every Margarita they have is excellent!Dietary restrictions: Great options for those needing to be gluten free“
“I absolutely love Taco stop,I did not know this place existed until I got on a huge taco kick recently. The food is very fresh and hot and will cater to all your taco needs. The staff is so nice and they are very helpful with anything you need. I love how they give you the free chips when you buy food. That was a nice little surprise on top of the delicious meal.“
