“This place is a true gem! Living in the southwest for a large percentage of my life, I have had a lot of Mexican food. However, since moving to the Midwest finding excellent Mexican food can be difficult. That is not the case here. This place is by far the best Mexican food I have had in Madison. They even have cactus nopales on the menu, which are cooked to perfection. My husband and stopped by for lunch to try this place as we have passed by it multiple times, but never stopped in. My husband had the carne asada plate and I had the enchiladas pollo con mole. These were mouthwatering delicious.“

“The food was decent. We ordered it to go, and it took between 5 and 10 minutes to come out. The only issue was once our food came out, other orders came out, and staff looked confused and kept looking through orders and digging through it, making sure what was what. I had heard them say our order already knew which one was ours.“

“We have been here SEVERAL times. You can’t go wrong with just about anything on their menu. I’ve tried their brunch chilaquiles (amazing- add some protein!), tacos, queso tacos (also amazing) their burritos. Their drinks are also amazing! One of my favs are their mojitos. I recently tried their blackberry mojito. It was delightful!Give this place a try! It’s family owned and their food also tastes so delicious and FRESH!“

“The food is the best Mexican food I’ve had! The flavors are subtle and complex! There are many classic dishes to choose from. The salsa (regular and spicy) is so flavorful and both are perfectly spiced! I always sit at the bar and enjoy watching the guys in the kitchen cook, and talking with Maria who is so kind. For me it’s like eating in someone’s home and being served with their wonderful home cooking. A classic gem in the heart of Madison!“

“An instant new favorite Mexican joint! Buy one get one free margaritas on Tuesday or was it half-price margaritas, either way absolutely delicious. Anything they have shrimp here is my favorite of all time. The Molé sauce, perfect sweet to savory ratio. The steak tacos, yes please! The husband and wife that own the place, family people with outstanding service and hospitality. Oh, and the best tamale I ever had. And the salsa is fresh, spicy, and delicious! 10/10!!“

“Our family affectionately calls Palenque "Chips and Salsa" since they have the absolute best. Our 10 year-old always needs his own dish of salsa, it's that good. The grown ups have our go-tos of molcajete and fajitas fundida. We happily drive from the west side of Madison to enjoy their food.“

“It wasn’t busy at all when we went but it wasn’t a typical lunch or dinner time. Staff was friendly, food was out quick. We got some of the tacos and they were sooo good. We also ordered the mango loco something (sorry I forget the exact name) to drink, it’s very a refreshing drink. I may have found my new favorite place to eat in Verona.“

“Absolutely love this restaurant. Been 4 times, and tried something new each time (except street corn, we always get the street corn). It’s not your common Mexican, much more authentic. Do yourself a favor and give it a try, the service and friendliness of the staff is also outstanding. Already one of my go-to places!Kid-friendliness: They understand the value of friendly service, and they try hard to do it well. Bravo.“

“This burrito has to be one of the best burritos I've ever had for the price. You can get as many toppings as you want and they didn't charge me any extra. With how much they put in there it barely fit in the wrapping. It also tasted super good and the blend of tastes was amazing. The service was also amazing. They were super kind and helpful.“

“Service was prompt and polite, and the food was great. The menu features Tex Mex and regional cuisine, with a focus on complex seafood offerings. I think this is the kind of restaurant one underestimates at first glance... The menu may look a little less than luxe, but the kitchen delivers! I'll definitely be back.“

“Girlfriend and I were doing little shopping and decided to stop for lunch. Service was quick and very friendly. Love the look of the place on the inside. Our server was friendly and spoke Spanish as well. He recommended lots of different types of drinks and new dishes they had. We ordered couple drinks and they were very good. We each ordered the three tacos and rice and beans option. All tacos were very good and rice and beans were great. They had a green salsa as well that was very tasty and had a good kick to it. Overall we enjoyed our food, had great service.“

“Upon entering, it was not busy and there was no one to greet us, took a couple moments but the bar looked fun. I can tell this restaurant is trying to make a statement - for me I say more more more. I was visually stimulated but could have used exciting music and maybe a water fountain. It is beautiful and I love that they are different. If you are open for business then be open, don’t put music on AFTER we walk in…first impressions matter. When we walked to the back dining area there was mostly beautiful furniture hand carved and colorful but some of the tables had work clutter on them which was distracting and I do not like to see that. I would recommend a separate area for work clutter that customers don’t see or maybe put a curtain up.The menu was well priced and lovely. Chips and salsa were served which was nice. Upon food arrival, the meat in my tacos was dry and over cooked but well seasoned and more salsa was required to get it down the hatch so to speak. I was disappointed they didn’t have horchata on the menu because that makes me happy. I loved the mole sauce but my friend said she wanted a green sauce option for her enchiladas. I would have preferred a meltier cheese inside the Chile relleno. I can tell the cooks here care and would like to try other things in the future. The service was disappointingly bare minimum which because it was not busy at all was extremely noticeable. This was upsetting to me and caused some minor irritation. But with time I hope that can be improved as customers need attention and to feel cared for. It would help business if the server could recommend menu options to customers with enthusiasm as it is a new restaurant. It would benefit if you passionately tell your story and your favorite items not just on the menu but through your servers communication efforts. I love to experience food that way.Unfortunately the bathroom smelled moldy and could have been wiped better. For the most part it was manageable.I give this restaurant four stars. I hope with attentive and hospitable service, moist cooked meats, organization/cleaning efforts, and maybe added menu specials, this place can thrive and welcome many guests on the West side. I wish your restaurant success! Thank you for having me.“

“We liked their baked items and it was at such an affordable rate. The place has a nice vibe and the owner was very kind and warm to us. This place caters to the blue-colored hard working Hispanic folks in town and I can see how their rough and battered looks can be intimidating to some people. For a place with such good food menu there wasn't a lot of seating inside. Because of these reasons I gave it 4 stars for the atmosphere. It also has a big attached grocery store with everything from fresh produce, meat and other food items. Hispanic friends in town can comment about the grocery but we liked the taking-back-to-roots vibe of the place. I almost forgot to mention that they also serve coffee although we didn't try it.“

“The food we ordered was absolutely phenomenal. The street corn is AMAZING. We ordered take out and unfortunately some beans and an extra side of street corn were missed, but that may have partially been my partners fault since they read off everything and he didn’t catch it. Prices are good for portion sizes as well.“

“We visited El Charro, Verona on Valentine's Day, 2024 for lunch. I'd never been here before & the location is convenient, no wait to be seated & the menu had plenty of selections, including vegetarian fare.I had the Speedy Gonzalez off of the lunch menu for $9.95 & my companion had a vegetarian #1 (bean enchilada, bean chalupa & bean quesidilla with beans & rice (extra charge >$6 for the latter.) My enchilada I ordered with black beans & the beans were COLD. (Not warm, refrigerator COLD.) The rest of the enchilada was hot & topped with a nice mole sauce. My taco was good & very the flavors were very fresh. The Vegetarian #1 of my companion was "okay." There were different sauces on his dish & he said only the mole was very tasty. We had Modelo 16oz on tap - a nice option! Our server was congenial, prompt, thorough & friendly. The environment is nice, we could converse, felt private in a booth by a window & overall it was a nice dining experience. The food was, in my opinion, average.“

“The restaurant looks really nice to eat at. I had an online pick up order. Great looking atmosphere and decorated nicely. The gentleman that got my order was really friendly.I had the Burritos De La Roqueta. The carnitas were overpowered by the green peppers and onions - there were a lot and I pulled most of them to the side. The creamy Verde sauce was amazing! The queso dip was really good but the salsa was kinda thin - but still with good flavor.I would definitely order again for takeout but I would order something different next time.If on this side of town, I'll stop in with my wife and try dinner in house.“

“I have been going to this pancheros since I was in elementary school and I love it here! The food has always been good and the workers are always so nice! But recently their cheese hasn’t been tasting right. I get quesadillas frequently and their cheese sometimes smells rotten and tastes funky. I hope something improves because I love going here and hate having to toss out a quesadilla if the cheese smells and tastes funny.“

“We were seated instantly when we arrived. The complimentary chips and salsa were so good. Our server was friendly. I had the Quesadilla Mexicali and it was amazing. The food came out soon after we ordered (the place was relatively empty, but I usually don’t expect food to come that soon).“

“This is a nice place to get a quick bite to eat. It's really small inside so there's not a whole lot of sitting. There's also no parking lot. I would recommend grabbing food to go or ordering it online. Not bad for a chain restaurant.“

“This place has a different vibe. They have a small lunch buffet, which is very good. It looks like the venue is a nightclub on the weekends, and they roll out tables and chairs for lunch. The barbacoa, carnitas, and chucken tinga for tacos are great. Their chorizo us awesome, though I regretted it later. I will go back, for sure.“

“Portions were large, and food was tasty. I had chimichanga. My wife had chicken quesadilla. Service was attentive and very pleasant. Prices were right for what was offered. “I was looking for Mexican and decided to try El Pastor. My favorite thing to order is Al pastor tacos so I got some. They don't marinate the pork in pineapple juice and cook it on a vertical spit like it is traditionally done (due to a health department inspection stating that was against guidelines). She offered they could cook the pork on the flat top with pineapple if I wanted them to. The final product was very tasty. The beans were delicious and not like typical "refried beans" served at most restaurants. There were whole beans and they had just the right amount of cumin to bring the authenticity! The rice was tasty and a nice accompaniment to the beans. The amount of food for the price was exceptional. My server was very pleasant and service was excellent! All in all, an enjoyable experience during my time in Madison.“

“We dine here at least twice monthly. The food and staff are fantastic! Great for date nights, friends, or family gatherings.Vegetarian options: As a vegetarian, I have never had trouble finding a delicious meal at Señor Pepper's. The staff even modified the taco salad for me once.Dietary restrictions: Members of my family with corn allergies and gluten allergies have been able to eat here (and enjoyed their meals).“
