“Located in downtown Millbrae and unassuming from the outside, but fish freshness inside! Came here for a weekday dinner so it wasn't crowded and the servers were very polite. Miso soup was good but no tofu, and salad could've used more dressing. The Negitoro (fatty tuna, green onion) roll and there was wasabi inside, I enjoyed this. The Deluxe Sushi which included 8 pieces total - 2 pc tuna, yellowtail, halibut, salmon, shrimp, salmon roe, egg/tamago. The egg had a hint of sweetness. The yellowtail sashimi entree came with 10 pieces and soup & salad. Each piece of fish was fresh and delicious! I left feeling satisfied with, would come again to try their other dishes and specials.“
“Our family enjoys eating at Naked Fish in Millbrae. Their sushi rolls and bento boxes are always delicious. There are many options to choose from between the menu and their daily specials. Their food is presented well and amply portioned. Their service is consistently good and the servers are attentive. Whether we eat a late lunch or dinner with family and friends, we always leave this place full and content. My only criticism of this place is the location. Because the gym is directly above it, more specifically, the weight room, you can hear the weights dropping on the floor on certain occasions and it’s distracting. However, because we enjoy eating here more than anything else, we tolerate the noise on the few instances it’s happened. There is ample parking around, both on the street and in the parking lot next to it.Overall, I recommend you try this restaurant if you’re in the neighborhood.“
“Definitely get here early or be prepare to wait! The service is A+! I got the omakase and it was very well put together. A reasonable price for a 10 piece, there were a few scales here and there, and the miso soup was slightly too sweet but very worth the price!“
“Their selection is great. It’s one of the few sushi places where they have makimono that emphasizes fish over rice + other fillings (not that I don’t also love the standard American sushi options, but it’s nice to have a leaner, simpler option). The veggie side dishes are also amazing - the eggplant is charred and juicy but not drowning terribly in oil, and okra is also really good. They also do delivery, which makes it a great casual option.“
“Very good food. Pleasant and fast service. Very good value for money. The venue is quite ordinary and ok to sit there, but a little more stop in for an all-evening place.Parking: Even on a busy Saturday night it was easy to find street parkingKid-friendliness: Many dishes that were easy for children to like like edamame, nigri, sashimi. Also several highchairs.“
“Quaint clean hole in the wall, tucked back in a business industrial park. Staff is friendly, attentive and the food is of quality with plenty of selections for anyone. I liked it so much I went for 3 evenings in a row, ate and drank something different every time. I went right when they opened at 5pm, go early, fills up quick on some nights! Worth it.“
“This review is for take out, but either way this place is GOOD! I want to actually eat here sometime but I had to write this because I enjoyed it so much. My friend and I got take out and placing the order online was super easy, but you do pay at the restaurant and there was no option for Apple Pay or to enter your CC number. I got a dinner bento box with gyoza and tonkatsu. The gyoza was good, fairly standard but good! I really enjoyed the Tonkatsu, it was breaded lightly to perfection and cooked really well. The prices seem fair and comparable to other spots in the area. The restaurant itself is small and they only have a few tables but that's okay! Everyone I interacted with was super sweet, I can't wait to go back!“
“Great fish, service and atmosphere. I really like how they have fish imported from Japan sushi market. Some options that you can't find easily. My daughter loved their California roll made with real crab meat and I love their Negitoro Maki.I will definitely come back here again.Parking: 3-4 spots in the driveway of the restaurant“
“Unassuming, somewhat hidden, but hands down, these guys need a bigger place and to be well known! I know that sushi in the Bay Area has a good rep… But I was certainly not expecting the quality that I got here tonight. I basically ordered off of the specials menu after I started with the SB Uni. Ama Ebi to Otoro, and everything was melt in your mouth fresh and delicious. If I could do it over again, I would have definitely gone with the Omakase because these sushi chefs will not disappoint!“
“I've had carryout from Hangetsu before but have never eaten in before. That was a mistake. Eating in, especially in the VIP room, is to be experienced. The room aside, I really enjoyed my meal. I had the miso black cod, which is a favorite and was as good as the best I have had (at Morimoto Philadelphia). The nigiri sushi were all fresh and delicious. I had the mackerel and salmon belly, and my son shared his o toro with me. Finished off with some mochi ice cream. And a Sapporo. What's not to love. See you again next visit!“
“Tiny restaurant with a smattering of tables and a chefs counter. Definitely try for the counter if you’re alone or a party of 2 (or 6)Do not attempt to walk in at least on a weekend; saw 2 or 3 couples make an attempt only to be sent away“
“Located in busy downtown San Mateo, this is an outstanding Japanese restaurant! Traditional preparation and high quality seafood. Be sure to try call in for a reservation, as this place is very popular. In fact, we had a 5:00 pm reservation and learned that the fresh oysters were already sold out(fortunately, they spared one order for us). Highly recommend their 8 piece sushi omakase. Loved their agadeshi tofu: fried tofu in warm broth. Their chawan mushi is another great starter, steam egg with chicken, fish cake.“
“I just ordered from Uber Eats! Can I just say phenomenal! I always want an extra side of ell sauce, yum yum sauce and believe it or not extra cream cheese with my sushi! They packaged my food up with care and it tasted delectable. I mean downright mouth watering! I enjoyed every single bit.“
“I have been going to Moki’s for over a decade and could not recommend it more. Their food is delicious, and there is something for everyone (good vegetarian food too). In addition, the service is quick and amazing. My personal favorites are the avocado rolls and French fries.Kid-friendliness: Very kid friendly!“
“Good spot for good value and quality sushi. . They have the standard fare like bento boxes. And sushi rolls but the thing to get here is the omakase. For $42 you get a 10 pc omakase dinner and it's the good quality fish. They also have specials like uni and bluefin which are of good quality. This location has a decent amount of seating although not many sit at the bar, just usually at the tables. Ambiance wise they usually have a some Asian music playing, one time it was K-pop, the other time it was Cantonese music so it's not overly quiet here. But it's not loud enough where you can't have a conversation. Most people at tables are talking and eating so it's a fairly lively spot. If you come on fri,sat sun it is good to make a reservation. Food is good and price is reasonable still in this environment. Same quality as the OG Amami in San Bruno and run by the same family. tLdr , come for the omakase, you'll be happy with the price quality ratio“
“Came on a Tuesday night with the family. We're always on the hunt for high quality, good value sushi. Fish is very fresh, rice on rolls and nigiri were perfectly proportional to the fish (not a fan of places that pile on the rice). We took advantage of happy hour and ordered a wide variety to ensure a good sample size. Even ordered a dinner entree, which was excellent. This place made it on our family Approved Restaurant List (ARL), so we will definitely be back for future meals.“
“DASH has been a favorite of ours since before they moved from behind the theater. The food is consistently good, the service is good, and while it's pricier than some of the lower end sushi places it's still a good deal for what you get. My wife picked DASH for my surprise 40th birthday party and they accommodated 8 of us easily.“
“Sashimi is generally good quality here though I had a large bone left in my sashimi piece last time. Tempura is good ingredients with crispy coating but lacking a lot of lace. Dining room is very small with the tables very close together. Sometimes that’s fun, sometimes not. Menu specials are a good bet for fresh, unique dishes.“
“Excellent sushi with many offerings not found elsewhere such as Hokkaido sea urchin and scallops. The delicious baby squid nigiri has the cutest pair of tiny squids about the size of a pinky finger. Pictured next to a pair of disposable chopsticks for scale. No “
“I loved this restaurant, the food was super delicious, you can see the quality of their products, it has a very good menu and above all excellent flavors, the place is average although you could tell that they were full of work because it was super full, but the staff, however Very friendly, very polite and excellent service I would definitely return.“
“An understated Japanese restaurant, the layout is accommodating, the seating is comfortable, tableware are authentic and elegant. The service is professional and attentive. The menu choices are plenty, every dish was delicious. Try the beef tongue, duck and eggplant along with the garlic edamame.“
“Ok, so if you never had true Wagyu let me tell you get it here! I don’t usually go to Japanese restaurants but have started more recently and I’m in love with the politeness, the culture of privacy and respect it’s very pleasant. The sake was super good. Loved the atmosphere 5/5 on food, 5/5 for flavor and 5/5 for design. And it’s 6 minutes away from the San Francisco Airport.“
“You only realize why it’s hard to score a reservation at this 8 seater sushi counter until you try Chef Yoshizumi special sashimi and nigiri tasting menu. Nestled in downtown St Mateo, this Japanese oasis that looks like your neighborhood sushi joint have some of freshest & tastiest seafood I have ever tried. From the Japanese delightful Amberjack to buttery Kinki(Japanese rockfish) to delicious Bonitos nigiri to sea eel nigiri from southern Japan that literally melts in your mouth. Watching the knife action of Chef Yoshizumi was a real treat, he was kind, nice and always smiling. Service was on point and their Sake tasting and choices were delightful and complimentary to the fish courses. The egg custard cake at the end was scrumptious but we didn’t really like the almond custard dessert. Definitely worth the trip and worth another visit.“
“2024-03-18 - Amami San consistently delivers amazing sushi @ incredible prices.Awesome everything - and amazing prices. Still amazing! This place has the best ? at the best prices. . .2023-11-01 - update. - if anything they just keep getting better!“
“Delightful neighborhood restaurant, especially for sushi! We walked in on a Friday night and didn't have to wait for a table. Our server was very polite and and offered great suggestions. We loved the agedashi tofu, but the sushi was exceptional. We mostly ordered nigiri with a yellowtail roll and a spicy specialty roll, but all of the fish was just fantastic and very fresh. The server explained the chefs follow a more specialized slow-preparation method for sushi and we definitely tasted the difference.“
“I don’t normally write reviews but this place I just HAD to. I didn’t take pictures of all the food but we got the black truffle edamame, uni nigiri, sweet shrimp nigiri and the 20 pc sashimi. All of the food was too good! I was very very impressed, the sashimi melted in your mouth and perfect texture and the uni was just perfect. When I tried the edamame I was very impressed and it was very reasonably priced! I will say going into it I was definitely a little annoyed since we waited a lil long ngl and so was my mom due to being really hungry but the staff was still very sweet and accommodating, she even gave us free shots and tried to get us a table asap !! I will definitely be coming back and recommending this place to my friends :) it was raining really hard and super windy when we came as shown in the video but still definitely worth the meal.“
“We go here for Sushi. The fish tastes fresh and they have a good variety of classic rolls. Usually the staff are pretty attentive and orders arrive as expected.Parking: I usually park at the parking structure on 3rd and B street and walk over. S.Claremont St. Sometimes there is street parking depending on what time of day you go.“
“Whoa! 5☆ Excellence! Great Fresh Fish on a Monday, let me tell you: When you order something CRUNCHY here, it is! No cold, soggy dish room tempura or deep-fried - it is HOT and CRISP - crackle in my mouth GOOD. So excellent here - fantastic bar service, great comfy vibe and deeeelicious sushi. I will be back fo' sho'!“
“I ordered the “Deluxe Chirashi Bowl” on DoorDash and was satisfied with the meal. Some points:1. Overall, the cuts of fish are very high quality. I applaud them for this. Chu-toro was cut generously.2. The sauces are too overpowering. It felt way too salty with how much ponzu was drizzled. Traditionally, chirashi/kaisen don bowls should highlight the fish. I felt like I was tasting too much sauce for my liking. The rice was not enough to “balance out” the saltiness. Then, there was also this sour-sweet relish that, by itself, could be good. But they drizzled so much of it I couldn’t taste the fish/rice anymore. Overall, too much sauce.3. I appreciated how they added their “signature touch” to the chirashi bowl with puréed yam. It balanced the salmon.4. Presentation is very good. I liked how they scored the salmon. Good touch.5. For a deluxe chirashi bowl, I was let down with only a single piece of uni and a single piece of amaebi. Usually, uni should come in two pieces? Somewhat understandable, since Santa Barbara uni is expensive these days (I’m pretty sure it’s Santa Barbara uni).6. Rice is okay—nothing special unfortunately. I admit I have pretty high standard with my sushi rice though.“
“On the cheaper side for food, and it's amazing. Haven't tried their ramen but tonkatsu curry is great.Takoyaki is more on the soft side, and karaage isn't crispy— but good. It's a different style— liking it would be preference.“
“Bring my sis here to celebrateher B day. Love the food right here. Food aree a little bit pricey but Good quality. The oster with quailegg and uni is my must order dish. The steam eggs as well. It can be really cold if your sit outdoor. Service is fair and can be improve.“
“Just discovered this place while walking the dog and thought I’d give it a shot. Awesome discovery! Very friendly greeter who prepared my meal immediately while I’m sure he had other online orders to fulfill. Got the pork katsu and rice - crispy breading, great flavor, a LOT of food! I highly recommend Ginto!“
“4.5 stars, rounded up.Thumbs up:- Very tasty food- Hearty portions- Very affordable (for Bay Area) prices- Strong selection of food and drinks- Not a long wait, even on a Friday nightMeh:- Service wasn't the most attentive- Really really loud :(. Hard to have a conversation“
“During the pandemic ordered takeout from here many times as they offer dinner bento boxes for around $20 for 3 items. They have their own website to order online for pickup (they do not deliver). Their food is pretty good and consistent quality, usual choices I select are katsu, saba shioyaki, California roll, spicy tuna roll, mix tempura, or beef short ribs. Bento box also include rice, miso soup and salad. Wait staff are friendly when picking up order. Plenty of free parking is available in shared lot of business plaza.“
“Really a great and cozy place for delicious sushi and dinner. Very romantic and I would recommend it as a sensual dinner experience for that 3rd or 4th date! ?Food is priced around $10-20 a plate. I went with 3 others and we all got whatever we wanted and paid around $45-60 each with tip.Parking: Parking located behind the sushi restaurant! Area is blocked off and labeled "For customers only"“
“The sashimi at this restaurant was exceptionally fresh, with a delightful taste that melts in your mouth. The environment was clean and comfortable, creating a relaxing atmosphere. The owner was warm and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, highly recommended for anyone who enjoys fresh and delicious sashimi.“
“I have been wanting to try this place for years and keep forgetting about it as it is located in a small strip mall on the other side of the tracks (literally) so I tend not to think of that side of town for dining.I was greeted immediately and sat at the bar. I have favorites I like to order in order to gauge the quality of the place and chef.First, the disappointment: the futomaki was plain, uninspiring, and plain dull. Not worth the $14. And a futomaki is a traditional roll that allows for a lot of creativity. I have had some stellar futomakis. Not so here.I had a bottle of junmai ginjo at $24 dollars. It was smooth... almost too smooth. The rice polish is 55%, same as one of my favorites, Kikusui junmai ginjo that has more distinct characteristics. While I have no complaints per se, I would look for something else next time. The nigiri was very good. Good taste, generous cuts/portion size, and the uni was great. Very fresh. Thank you Santa Barbara!I'd give the place a 4.5 to be more fair. I'll be happy to go back, but with more realistic expectations.“
“Solid AYCE sushi spot! It replaced Ultra Sushi but they have the same (or super similar) menu items as them - so maybe just ownership changes? Either way this is a solid spot for AYCE which is very lacking in the bay area overall compared to socal. The ordering system may seem odd (one star item must accompany non-starred items) but it honestly isn't too difficult and allows you to try other things. Everything tasted fresh and they were attentive.“
“This is our favorite sushi's restaurant, the service always Great! Even if we order to go they even offer tea, and y daughter's love it!! So yes do yourself a favor and try our local restaurant in san carlos great place for a great sushi!!“
“We all enjoyed our dinners here. I'm not a raw fish fan so I had the tonkatsu, which was excellent. I prefer it served over a mound of shredded cabbage but it was very good, lean and pounded thin. The salad and miso soup were great. My dinner companions had a variety of sashimi and other sushi and seemed to enjoy them quite a lot. We will be back!“
“Used on 21mar2024.I am a Japanese person from Amami Oshima. The yellowtail kamayaki was so delicious that I ordered another one.For Japanese people, I would like the sashimi to be cut thinner. The fish was very fresh and delicious.Regarding the balance of sashimi and rice in nigiri sushi, there is extremely little rice, which makes it feel strange. When making miso soup to go with sushi, it is common to use red miso instead of sweet white miso.Next time I would like to make a reservation in advance and try the tuna kamayaki.“
“Off the main strip of downtown San Mateo, tho rivals the more popular stops there (ex: Sam's)House sake was delicious Speed of service was fastRolls are big, so take this into account when ordering. We did 3 rolls for 2 ppl and had leftovers, which is unusual for us. Interior is not the nicest / most aesthetic, so if you're in search of a cute date spot, would look elsewhere.“
“Cannot say enough great things about Tokie’s! We find ourselves coming here more and more. Everything here is just done right. It has the dining area with bar seating, frequently playing sports. But it’s sectioned off so it doesn’t impact the diners. Cocktails are great, the sake is great, the food is great, the prices are great, it’s all just great! Our service is always fantastic (Sho is the best) and you can tell the owner not only cares about his establishment, but also his community.“
“My fiancé surprised me with this for Valentine's day and I couldn't be happier! He ordered the omakase box & the tuna box and both were impeccable. The flavors were so unique, the fish was so fresh, and the presentation!! Literally gorgeous. Pick Up: They have pickup locations in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Hayward. The SF location is in the Sunset district! They were on time & super easy to find. Pickup was seamless :) Tuna Box: There were so many new flavor combinations in this box that I haven't tried before and that work so well. For example, truffle and parmesan on tuna!? Both parm & tuna have such strong flavors and I was worried it wouldn't mesh well together but it was so delicious. One of my favorite pieces! One of the pieces had this pate on it, it was perfectly salty and creamy. The otoro piece - SO BUTTERY. Literally tastes like the quality of tuna I had in Japan. Omakase Box: I loved the variety in this box!! It was my first time having raw mini octopus and it had the perfect chew to it. I loved the uni w/ ikura piece, the uni was so fresh and creamy and the ikura burst with flavor. Both boxes come with freshly grated wasabi and a cute soy sauce bottle. The pieces honestly didn't even need soy sauce because they had so much flavor. We'll definitely order from here again!“
“We have been coming to this place for many years. They still have the sushi boats, yay. However they only run for the lunch and dinner rush. I had the spicy rice bowl with a Korean sauce. It was not really spicy. I'll come back to have fun with the boats.“
“This is great Japanese food and sushi. Recommend hamachi carpaccio and really anything on the menu. Service is a little disjointed, but still decent. Drinks are great too. Chef could do less guest fraternization, but if he's the reason the food is so good, whatever. The value is really good here, but another annoyance is that the menus and the tables are "sticky" - this is maybe not to say "not clean", but noticeable and shows staff is not instructed properly.“
“My family loved Ozuma, too, but Owada consistently serves some of the most flavorful sushi anywhere on the SF Peninsula. A little pricy, but absolutely worth it!! Owada’s Chirashi Combo bowl is one of the better dishes I’ve had, with lots of variety in bite-sized pieces.“
“Came here a few weeks ago with my boyfriend on an extremely rainy night. The down pour was crazy!! When we got there, we only ones in the restaurant due to the weather and being so close to closing time. Had a fun, casual, intimate dinner and was thankful they let us in so close to closing time. 1) Service was amazing and attentive. The crew on that night was fun - blasting catchy music as they wrapped up. 2) Offered a free drink! 3) Food was tasty and reasonably priced. Really enjoyed and would recommend the deluxe hand roll! Also enjoyed their hamachi mango roll. (My boyfriend thought differently about the mango, but I thought it was a nice, flavorful addition) 5/5 would recommend!“
“Really cool hideaway type location! I am vegetarian and I ordered the wrong type of veggie sushi. It was too seafood tasting to me but they noticed and helped me get a avocado and cucumber roll without seaweed which was delicious. They have soda, beer, tea, apple juice. Yummy! ?Vegetarian options: Just order without seaweed if you do not like a fish or seafood taste. Also no seaweed salad :)“
“This place is great for a quick sushi bite. You can try a lot of different dishes here because the plates are small and very inexpensive! Atmosphere is similar to one of those Japanese bending machine restaurants. You place your order on a tablet with minimal human contact.“
