Every time I visit Roots (which is fairly regularly over the past year) they provide exceptional service and great food. Since my review 1 year ago Roots has truly demonstrated the best in restaurant customer service and great food. Thanks Roots! So Roots Pizza impressed me with their amazing cheese sticks. Lately, I have been going there for their impressive build your own salad which is plentiful and they do not skimp on ingredients at what I think is a great price. Each time I have visited, I have had no problem with the host accommodating my seating requests or working with me to find a seat that works for me and the restaurant. Generally, the service is pleasant, courtesy and sometimes outgoing friendly--one young woman with a thick southern accent sticks out as super friendly and accommodating and there have been others.

Sadly, my experience with the host this evening was anything but professional--a young male with burnette hair and I think a moustache. I went in and requested a table for one--there were a number of free booths but he offered me a high top with metal chairs, the bar, or a small two top seated near other diners (I was on my phone and peferred not to disturb others). Often, I sit in the same area/booth when I visit, so I asked for the same--even though these booths were empty, the host insisted I sit at a small two seater sourounded by other diners instead of the less filled section of booths. The host said "no" this is what I have for you since you are just one person--the booths are for more people...I asked if he expected the larger booths to get filled (many times, I have been nearly the only one in my dining area or leaving when it starts to get more populated) he said "yes" with an annoyed, dismissive voice and refused to seat me in a booth as I requested. I sit down and try to recover from his disrespectul tone and "welcome" if you could call it that. As I look about the room, I notice a lone man sitting in a booth totally solo similar to what I requested (I wont mention race, but it could definitely be a factor). I ask the host how this man was seated alone in the type of booth I requesed and he responded in a very condescending disrepectful voice, "he is a mean grumpy old man who comes hear all the time and that no one likes and he complains and sits where he likes"--I responded, "so you have to protest to sit where you want?" This host then walked away with no response. He returned later and offered me the larger booth next to my table (after the people left and it was empty) which I moved to. So to wrap up--I am not one to hog a table for four if there is a table for one that works--each time I have been at Roots there is not a high demand for a larger booth where I am displacing larger parties and I am seated where requested. This time was the same--empty booths--although people came in after me, booths were seated and emptied so that it seemed all were accomodated. Roots has good food and a great neighborhood concept--it should rethink who represents hospitaility in the case of this particuar host.“

“We recently had dinner at Coalfire on Grand Ave. in West Town and really enjoyed their coal oven baked pizza. We dined early on a weekend evening so no problem with grabbing a table on a walk in basis. Opening hours are Indoor environs were urban modern with tables spaced nicely. Opening hours are 4pm to 10pm (Tue-Thurs) and noon to 10.30pm (Fri-Sun), closed on Mondays. Service was very friendly. Menu features a few salads as well as a list of pizzas. They also do a build your pizza custom order if preferred. We ordered the Jalapeno Pepperoni which was nicely baked thin crust with a good amount of char. Savoury tomato sauces, cheese, pepperoni and jalapeno were all good quality and tasty. This was a really good pizza, one we'd gladly return to reorder. Would also be happy to try other pizzas on the Coalfire menu.“

“Outside patio was so charming. Enter thru the alley and look for the twinkle lights. Fun music selection and awesome pizza and salads. Staff was super friendly and quick, Definitely a gem in the neighborhood!“

“They make the absolute, hands down, best meatball grinder I've ever had. Everything about it is otherworldly.
The meatballs are well flavored and have the ideal texture and consistency one could ask of a meatball. There's an herby, garlicky flavor which is very noticeable without being overwhelming.
The sauce is just a little sweet, just enough to contrast with the meat. There was mozzarella and it seemed like a little bit of ricotta too, but not too much to make it gloopy.
The bread was perfect, really more of a hard, crusty, fresh baked roll. It provided a crunchy contrast while standing up to the healthy heaping of ball and sauce and cheese.
It was the best sandwich I've had all year and the best meatball sandwich I've ever had.“

“This is easily the best neopolitan pizza I’ve had in chicago! Haven’t had anything better honestly. We got the pistachio pesto pizza and soppresata - both were super good. It was about a 30 min wait at lunch time so just make sure you have time to hang out or order ahead. One pizza could feed two if you aren’t crazy hungry, although my husband and I finished one each!“

“I have lived most of my life in Chicago not eating New York-style pizza, but this place opens a few years ago and it is becoming one of my favorites. I still eat a lot of other styles of pizza but for just one quick slice this is a go to. I had a friend recently turn me onto cheese pizza, and that is my favorite slice here. If you’re going to eat here, you have to make sure to fold your slice of pizza because that is the traditional way to eat this style of pizza. I hope you enjoy it.“

“I absolutely enjoyed my lunch here yesterday! I've walked past here many times in the evening with my dog 🐕 and finally had an opportunity and excuse to come in to try their pizza. I picked the Mary pesto pie 🥧 named after Chef Joel's Aunt and he personally came to my table straight from the kitchen to present it to me. I enjoyed the texture, flavors and lovely presentation and the restaurant itself is charming, cozy and perfect to enjoy some gourmet comfort food. All the staff here is welcoming and excited to share their knowledge of the contents of the food they serve. My mouth watered though once I viewed their pastry selection so I couldn't leave without trying their version of chocolate pudding. They open their doors 🚪 at 9 AM for breakfast so I would love to return here again just to understand in a hot chocolate and pastries. Thanks for a wonderful time and I've still got pizza 🍕 leftover from yesterday's indulgence. I hope to find outside patio seating here this summer 🙏 so my dog can share a pizza pie with me ....“

“We had the burger, it was great and so were the fries. The mozzarella breadsticks were really good as well but a little overwhelming with the cheese. Also got a small pepperoni pizza with classic crust and it had good flavor, the middle of the pizza crust was soggy which i think was from the grease from the cheese and pepperoni so jt made it difficult to eat. We will be back.“

“We were excited to try Bonci, but the experience was jarring from the moment we walked in. Instead of the welcoming ambiance you’d expect at a Roman-style pizzeria, we were blasted with deafening Spanish music—so loud it was impossible to hear my date. If I wanted a Roman pizza, I definitely didn’t sign up for a Dominican jungle soundtrack. It completely ruined the atmosphere.

Now, the pizza itself is fantastic—no complaints there. But the service? Terrible. The guy behind the counter didn’t understand English and kept asking me the same question over and over. I told him multiple times that I wanted four slices, all the same size. Each time, he asked, “How much?” It felt like an absurd game of broken telephone.

Honestly, the service in this city is consistently awful, and Bonci is no exception. It’s a shame that such great pizza is marred by such an incompetent staff and terrible atmosphere.“
