We've rounded up Kenilworth's top Mexican spots for you to try.
“Spicy Delight at Tonbo Mexican Grill!I recently had the pleasure of trying Tonbo Mexican Grill's Chicken Burrito at their Kenilworth location on the Boulevard (700 the Boulevard). If you're a fan of heat, this is the place to be!Opting for extra hot hot sauce turned out to be a brilliant decision – the tremendous heat added an exciting dimension to the flavors. The transparency of their open kitchen ensures you're getting a fresh and meticulously prepared meal. Although I didn't try the Birria Tacos this time, I'm already looking forward to it on my next visit.Dietary restrictions: The burrito is flavored amazing it's obvious they use significantly less sodium than other Mexican restaurants and burrito spots. Love the flavor of the food.Parking: Plenty of parkingKid-friendliness: Ice Cream, Brownies, Cookies & Churros“
“Really enjoyed the atmosphere in this restaurant the food is good and the hospitality is very inviting. “The vibe is amazing as soon as you walk in. Staff is friendly to the T. Food's worth what you pay for, 8/10 in taste. Me and my girl go for dinner, a quick session at the bar or something to go. Overall, I vouch for Johnny's. No pictures because I'll be back.“
“Went on a Saturday around noon. Food and drinks were nice and fresh. I had a mezcal and Blueberry drink and my wife ordered a tequila version of a Pina colada. For our meal I ordered the chicken enchiladas. The chicken was well seasoned and the green sauce had a nice bright citrus flavor and was quite enjoyable. My wife ordered the tree leches French toast which was nice very nice as well. The only disappointment was the fact that they only served brunch and we were looking to have the mole. Wish we were told prior to being seated or at least a sign posted. Not used to seeing brunch on Saturdays, usually thought brunch was reserved for Sundays. Will try again in the future but for dinner instead.“

“I tried their birria tacos when they first opened (1-2 years ago), and they were good but I remember the tacos were on the smaller side compared to others I've had (e.g. Chofi in Union). Granted, they were a new restaurant and I assumed still working out some kinks. In all honesty, I ended up forgetting about this restaurant. I just ordered through Uber eats today, and the tacos were bigger than last time, tasted amazing, and delivered hot. Flavor was on point for the tacos, consome, and green salsa. Happy to add The Birria Kitchen in my rotation of local restaurants!“
“I read the reviews online and went there based on their ratings. I was expecting a nice little sit down restaurant but this is actually more of a takeout place. They do have a few tables so we did eat in there. The food was fresh. I wasn't thrilled with the flavors. I got fish tacos and really the only thing I could taste was the cabbage. The guacamole and chips were very good and fresh. I probably won't go back. The people there are extraordinarily nice“

“My husband and I lived in Harrison in 2019-early 2020 and this was our local taco spot. We were obsessed. We moved due to the pandemic and to this day we haven’t found better tacos than these. We compare every taco we ever have to these, hoping to find some that will compete and they never come close.“
“Stopped by this local dot because I was HUNGRY! Lol. Also needed to get something before heading to my next appointment. I walked in and although the place was empty, the employee at the front was patient, helpful and friendly. I liked the decor and cleanliness of the establishment. You could tell they worked hard to keep this casual spot warm and inviting. Down to the flower vases on each table. I ordered the pupusa and chicken tacos. The food was flavorful and ingredients fresh. Even the radishes and cucumbers as garnish was fresh. I'll be back again. I love finding local spots with great food! Let me know if you have any to recommend.“
“Run don't walk to this new Maplewood gem! We had dinner here Sunday night & everything was excellent! Love the decor, ambiance, staff & food. We had the guacamole, octopus, the tacos al pastor, crispy fish tacos, chicken mole poblano enchiladas, shrimp fajitas & tres leches cake. The Jamaica/hibiscus aguafresca was delish as is or with tequila as a cocktail. We'll definitely be back & often“
“First, welcome to this New Mexican Restaurant located at 704 Jersey Ave Elizabeth 07202, second, I want to say that I have been to more than 15 Mexican restaurants and with all the respect they deserve. I love this one specifically. For the quality of the food, the texture, the great service, the good attention. The food is fresh and the amount they put is an excessively large amount. Congratulations, great job. I will always be back. I like that there are all kinds of traditional Mexican drinks.“
“This place was so good. We visited from out of state and now I wish I had one close to my home. Chips and salsa were amazing. Beef enchiladas were sooo good. Enchilada sauce was some of the best I’ve ever had. My mouth is watering writing this review.Service was great too and we enjoyed the atmosphere!“
“My friend and I got together for some good Mexican food. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and was greeted by the host/server and sat. It was a dimly lit restaurant. I started with the red sangria, and that was tasty. I was a little disappointed because they had no red wine for my next drink, so stuck with the sangria. For my appetizer, I got the camarones scampi, but it was a garlic shrimp, and it was tasty. My friend had the fiesta platter and I tried it and it was good. We then had the shrimp tacos, which were delicious! For my meal, I got the red snapper, and my friend had the garlic shrimp dish. I really enjoyed the red snapper, and my friend enjoyed the shrimp. We then had the dulce de leche cheesecake, which was good. We really had a good experience!“
“I recently order takeout and was blown away by the amazing food, generous portions, and top-notch customer service. “Loved the futbol game playing in the background, how homey it felt to eat there. Split birria tacos and tacos dorados with a date. Both were amazing, even dipping the tacos dorados into the birria consume. The horchata was okay. But the space was perfect for a cute calm date. Would definitely go back.“
“I had a meeting earlier in the day and didn't have lunch, so I was looking for something good to eat when I saw Fandango Mexican Grill. I was amazed at the beautiful decor of Mexican art. I was promptly greeted by a very friendly welcoming waitress. Everything on the menu looked great and I had a hard time selecting something, so I asked my waitress to recommend something. She recommended the Carne Asada Burrito. I ordered that and was not disappointed. The burrito was enormous, full of well seasoned steak, cheese and rice. It was so good. I would definitely Fandango Mexican Grill. ?“
“I've tried hundreds of Mexican spots all over the country. Im from NJ... been to mexico 5 times. This is literally my favorite spot that I have tried in the states. The owner cares so much and makes everything "home made". Try it and see for yourself.“
“Some of the best Mexican food I have ever had! Steak burrito is excellent and shrimp tacos are AMAZING! My husband and I prefer the truck food over the physical restaurant location, the food seems more flavorful. The prices are great and the service is very friendly.“
“Just wanted to say thank you for the excellent food for our recent party. The guests were all commenting how delicious and well prepared the food was. It was also more food than we expected, and was very well packed for transport. We’ve enjoyed the experience of dining at Sofia’s, and now also the catered g experience.“
“A truly wonderful authentic Mexican restaurant. Food is super fresh and salsas are flavorful. The horchata may have been made from scratch but I didn't ask, either way it was great! My husband and I loved eating here and this has been the most authentic Mexican I have discovered since moving to the east coast four years ago. Hands down, a solid great restaurant.“
“Being from Texas, we are always looking for a place that reminds us of home, and this was it! Torta with bistek was very good, the bread was nice and toasted. Husband got taquiles with pastor, and the grilled pineapples were such a sweet surprise! The guacamole and chips were tasty and the horchata was delicious! Service was attentive and food was delivered very quickly. We will definitely go back to get our torta and taco cravings filled!“
“When I say everything was top notch. I got the fried pickles 10 out of 10, the street corn also a 10 out of 10.To add to my madness I got the shrimp and jerk chicken fajitas. Babbyyyyyyyyy I was so surprised at how it came out. My food came out sizzling and I love it. The toppings were so fresh and so on point. I love this place it’s a new fav for me. 20 out of 20I had a margarita the mi casa is su casa it was so freaking delicious and I got one to go. It was made with casamigos. My first time here and let me just say I will be back. My waiter was sweet and attentive“
“Wow. Finally. GOOD FOOD that can be taken to go. I’m beyond relieved I don’t have to endlessly search for other food options that aren’t fried or fast food. Even chick fil a is falling off these days.If you’re tired of the same old generic garbage fast food, then please take a shot on this Mexican food.I ordered the chicken fajita to go with a pineapple Mexican soda they had there. It was alllll delicious ?came with a house salad as well, and the staff were very kind and respectful. This spot is right next to a panera, wingstop, even a movie theatre, right off of 22.“
“We order Tito’s very often. It’s not always consistent but tonight it was really good. Everything was fresh, well cooked and fast. I will say anytime it’s not good and so am asked for a review, I let them know and they always make good on it.“
“I would give 100 stars if I could. Food. Amazing. Price. Perfect. Staff. A delight. My super picky child who does not eat beans cleaned her plate! I don't know if it's me but since moving to this area I can't find good nexican food. We'll this place is going to be my new favorite spot!“
“Bomb ass food. Had an appt nearby and decided to check in. Ordered shrimp tacos and grilled chicken with rice/peppers. Simple dishes but they perfected it. Lorena was sweet and attentive. The place gives that authentic feel - I really felt like I was in Mexico! Everyone was under 4ft, the decor was Mexican-esque and the music was perfectly aligned. Would return for sure!!“
“I love this place. I have gone there a few times, and it didn't take me much time to fall in love with everything on their menu. The food comes very fast, and it is amazing how they make such good food in such a short time. The service is great and the employees are very welcoming. The ambiance is pretty decent, and I really like how they made a brick wall inside. Overall, this is one of my favorite restaurants. 10,000,000 stars. (By my 11-year-old son)“
“Strolling through town a wanted a little snack to go with my healthy smoothie from earlier. I walked in and was warmly greeted by a cheerful guy. After checking out the menu, I asked him what his favorites were and he made all the tacos sound so delicious. I was kinda of leaning towards a bowl, but after hearing all the taco goodness I grabbed a Cajun shrimp taco to hold me over till later.Turns out the guy I was chatting with was the owner, Todd. Really great to interact with him, super passionate about this place.Service was fast, taco was $6ish, and it was really tasty. I should've grabbed a deal for three, but I'll be back to eat more another day. You should too!“
“Came here for a late lunch on a Sunday. The experience was so much better than I had expected. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. First, the drinks. I had two rocks margaritas. They were very, very good. And a good size too. Very tasty. I've had some great margaritas, and some terrible ones. These were very much on the good/great side. So that was refreshing. We ordered the shrimp and scampi/garlic appetizer. OMG, we wanted to drink that sauce it was so good. Fresh cut garlic, just so good. Wife ordered the steak fajitas and I ordered the combo (chicken/steak/shrimp) fajitas. I think fajitas are a great choice to order here. They are presented very nicely, you get a lot, and they were absolutely delicious. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, just wonderful. The rice and beans were also service in a little tortilla bowl, which I proceeded to eat also. Overall it was just awesome. I can't wait to come back!“
“First time visit, I have to say this is now my favorite place to eat in rahway. Variety of tacos stuffed generously.Tasty. Salsa also very good served with chips. The cubano sandwich with steak, ham, chorizo, chicken, beans LTO on a roll was fantastic and filling served with skinny seasoned fries. Fajitas mixta was seasoned well and very tasty. Not a hint of pretension surrounds this place. A place to eat good food at a very fair price“
“I didn’t know where to buy pizza and I came across to this restaurant thru the internet. Everything it was delicious above expectations!!
