“This past Saturday, I treated myself to a me date a day dedicated entirely to myself. After indulging in a relaxing one-hour massage, I found myself absolutely starving. Wanting to try something new, I continued my exploration of Homewood’s restaurant scene and landed on The Battery. I met my aunt there for lunch, and as soon as we arrived, I knew we were in for a treat. The place was packed inside and out which is usually a great sign. After about a 15 minute wait, we were seated. The interior had a modern, inviting atmosphere, and the service was excellent. Our waiter was incredibly kind, answered all of my questions, and I never once had to ask for a refill. Despite the restaurant being full, the service was impressively quick, and every dish arrived hot. Appetizers Buffalo Wings – The wings were well-sauced and smoked to perfection, with the meat falling off the bone effortlessly. However, the biggest letdown was the lack of seasoning. While the smoky flavor was great, the wings themselves needed more depth. 7.9/10 (With proper seasoning, this would easily be in the high 8s or even a 9). Queso & Chips – The chips were fresh, crunchy, and unseasoned but still did the job. The queso had potential, but it lacked the bold flavors needed to truly stand out. It wasn’t bad, but it could have been much better. 6/10 Entrées & Sides Wedge Salad – The salad itself was solid, but the bacon was a miss. It had an overpowering liquid smoke taste, leaving a strange aftertaste and smell. 7/10 Fries – These were outstanding hot, crispy, and well-seasoned. I also appreciated the variety of cuts and shapes. 8.5/10 Smash Burger – A well-executed smash burger with that signature crispy edge and juicy interior. However, the meat itself wasn’t seasoned, which held it back from being exceptional. 8/10 Final Thoughts Overall, The Battery was a great experience, and I’d happily return. The biggest downside was the lack of seasoning across multiple dishes. If they improved that, their food would easily score even higher. That said, I still highly recommend trying this place. Final Rating: 8/10 Service: 10/10 – Absolutely fantastic staff! Would I go back? Without a doubt.”

“I was genuinely excited to try this restaurant after passing by it so many times while traveling through Downtown Homewood. Unfortunately, my experience was a bit of a letdown. That said, it wasn’t terrible by any means, which is why I’m giving it 3 stars. A friend and I dined here together as most of my readers know, I often bring someone along for reviews to offer more than just my own perspective. Appetizer: We started with the Tallulah Wings, opting for the Sweet Heat Dry Rub with Alabama White BBQ sauce. The first surprise was that the wings arrived already coated in the sauce. In my opinion, when a sauce is meant as a dip, it’s best served on the side, not as a coating. Unfortunately, the wings themselves were quite underseasoned it reminded me of drinking a LaCroix, with just a faint whisper of the sweet heat flavor. That said, the little flavor I could taste had a nostalgic charm, reminiscent of Golden Flake potato chips and those are undeniably delicious. I just wish the wings had packed more of a punch. Entrée: Next, we tried the Social Stack, essentially their version of a McDonald's Big Mac. I have to say, it was significantly better than a Big Mac. The sauce was flavorful, the patties were fresh and well-seasoned, and everything came together beautifully. It’s a rich burger, but the crispy, seasoned fries helped balance that richness. The freshness and flavor made this burger a standout I’d absolutely order it again. If it weren’t for the disappointing wings, this meal would have earned a solid 4 out of 5 stars. As it stands, I’m giving it 3 out of 5. However, I do plan to return and explore more of their menu. I believe there’s potential here, and I’m hopeful my next visit will be a more satisfying experience.”

“Every experience at this restaurant has been fantastic! My family has been dining there since they opened. Their customer service is unbeatable! I really think Linda could teach a course on how to run a business. As a vegetarian, they have delicious options. Our son and daughter who are not vegetarian both love the angel roll! Okinawa is a fabulous restaurant!”

Maybe just a poor choice for me this time. The dip that comes with the chips was MILD, but had a good flavor. Which may be good for some people.”

In over two decades of dining here, we have never had a single bad experience. The service has always been friendly, the food consistently delicious, and the environment welcoming and comfortable. “Food is always delicious and fresh! I love the Powerhouse bowl and the avocado toast, their iced coffee is also delicious (I recommend the Roosevelt, which is honey and cinnamon flavored syrup). I always get it doordashed but everything tastes just as good and fresh as it does picking it up. Would definitely recommend!”

“There are tables but Chop Suey Inn is and has been for decades a takeaway establishment. The menu is extensive and has items most Chinese restaurants don't have. The egg rolls are a star here with tiny shrimp and bits of pork. Unlike everywhere else these egg rolls are bigger and yet still lighter, two would make a meal for some. I've eaten their food since moving here in the early 1980s and I'm pleased to say the food quality has not changed. If someone has a craving for a particular dish that's hard to find check them out, they may have it.”

“We recently hosted my daughter’s birthday party at Neighbors. We cannot stop raving about our experience! It was hands down the easiest birthday party we have ever experienced. The staff at Neighbors took care of everything! The shop was decorated with balloons, party favors made, and the tables were set with paper and crayons. They played a slide show of my child and got to pick out the playlist. We walked into a fully set up party and a happy and accommodating staff! The kids and parents raved about the experience. They were SO accommodating when it came to unexpected siblings tagging along by letting us have the options of additional party favors and having a tab open for extra ice cream. After the party, the staff took care of all the clean up leaving us feeling like we just got the red carpet treatment. If you have a party coming up I strongly encourage you to check out their events page on their website. I will be recommending them to everyone. We have hosted so many kids parties. This was by far our favorite (and easiest) one!”

“I had the most incredible experience with Savage’s Bakery in Homewood, AL I recently picked up a birthday cake that I had ordered and put it inside my car in the floorboard. My dog got so excited and jumped on top of the cake box and completely demolished it. After taking it back into Savage’s to see if they could repair it, they looked at it and said, give us a few minutes, we’ll take care of it. Within 20 minutes they texted me and said it was as good as new. Not only did they fix my beautiful cake, they wouldn’t let me pay or tip them for everything they did. Such amazing people that work at Savage’s! I will always remember such kindness!!! They are the BEST bakery ever!!!!!!”

Between there and the Alabaster location, my Mexican food cravings are more than covered and they are always patient with my substitutions and the like. “Okay as someone who LOVES acai bowls and have had them at multiple different places in different cities, I must admit that Farm Bowl and Juice Company has the best and cutest açaí bowls I've ever had! I've been twice so far since the opening and it taste amazing, I wish I could afford to eat it every single day! I love the atmosphere as well. I normally go to other juice bars and açaí places in Tuscaloosa, but Farm Bowls is so much closer to my home. So between it being close to home, the best açaí bowls ever, friendly staff, and a great atmosphere, I am SOLD!”

“The Edge worked with our class to hold a great, casual high school reunion meetup without the added fees and charges others wanted. There is a good variety of food and drink vendors and the venue is laid out to bring people together in a relaxed setting with lots of tables, both sheltered under fans and open-air in the sun.

During our reunion, their large outdoor video screen was showing the World Cup and College World Series for other patrons who came to watch those events.

We especially recommend Corbeau Wine Bar; their owner and friendly staff went the extra mile to help our class virtually take over their cool bar as our reunion base. Good food (including fresh flatbreads!) and a large selection of wines. There’s also beer and frozen drinks.

“Excellent Chinese Food. Fresh and seasoned appropriately. I ordered a half roasted duck which was so tender and plated beautifully. I also tried the sweet pea leaves. Very tender greens seasoned with light garlic sauce. Love loved the greens. I also ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. Very tasty lightly spiced with, peanuts, mushrooms and zucchini in a light sauce. All Came with 2 orders of steamed rice and was packaged to go, as I was traveling back to MS. I enjoyed a chicken egg roll that was fresh and filled with lots of chicken in a crispy roll and was hot. Could have ate a second one. Everything was remarkably delicious and the young lady who took my order was patient and explained the different dishes. This was my second time to order from Mr. Chen’s. I dined in the first time. The Restaurant is tastefully decorated and is uniquely located inside the Homewood Chinese Grocery Store. Next time I go to Birmingham I want to purchase some of the produce and other items that appeared fresh and healthy from the store, which had an abundance and variety of items not found in your typical grocery store. Well worth making a stop.”
