Barrel Riot Winery Winery •
13625 Midland Rd, Poway

“We found Barrel Riot at a Farmer's Market while on vacation in the San Diego area. We purchased the Orange Muscat and it was perfectly balanced and just the right sweetness. I ordered a bottle of one of their red blends as a host gift for Christmas and had it shipped to AZ. I accidentally put in the wrong address and when I immediately called to correct it, the owner corrected it and printed up the shipping address while on the phone with me and made sure the bottle shipped out in time to arrive before Christmas (I waited until last minute and figured it would arrive after, but he was awesome!) They are super friendly and the wine is delicious!“

Mission Cellars Urban Winery Wineries • $$
14053 Midland Rd, Poway

“Tastings: Flight of 5 wines, Whites $13, Mixed $14, and Reds $15. Wines by the glass (white or red) $13, Specialty wines $13-$16 (prices as of 8/19/23)First time visiting this intimate, rustic wine tasting room and production facility in Poway. Tristan poured for us and was a very gracious host and extremely knowledgeable about their wines. They have a nice selection of whites, reds, dessert wines, Sangria, and refreshing slushies. Their fruit is sourced primarily from California, and they make a little bit of everything. IMO, the white wines tend to be a little lighter bodied, crisp, with little time on oak. The reds were a little lighter bodied than what we usually prefer, but well made. The two "dessert" wines were outstanding. Wine tasting is very subjective, so you should definitely give it a try for yourself. They don't have food, however there are several local food vendors that will either deliver or you can pick up and eat there. The inside tasting room is not huge, but they have a large outdoor patio with wonderful views of Old Poway Park and the sunset. They're open later than most wineries, so that's a perk as well.Definitely worth a visit when you're in the area.“

Speckle Rock Vineyards Wineries • $$
16138 Highland Valley Rd, Escondido

“In a region with a booming winery scene, Speckle Rock is a step above the rest. We've been there a number of times now and always enjoy the view, the wine, and the live music. They're very laid-back about reserving tables for any size party if you call in advance, and every table has a beautiful view out over the valley. A new highlight from our visit this past weekend is their Vineyard Tour. Call to check when this is being offered, but it was an absolute blast to get to ride around the property and see all the fascinating hidden gems tucked away around the vines. There's history in those hills I had no idea of, and it was a great time getting to explore it all!“

Rancho Guejito Vineyard Winery •
17224 San Pasqual Valley Rd, Escondido

“A toast to the New Year! What could be better than wine? A winery review, perhaps. Rancho Guejito opened its doors to the public five years ago.The property is made up of estate grapes and a grass-fed cattle ranch . The 32,000 acre rancho is part of a land grant from Mexico to the United States. The winery and vineyard offer tastings, which can be waived with a wine club membership. The cattle ranch provides for a portion of the food served on- site and they offer a meat program to take home. This has become my new favorite local spot to enjoy on the weekend. What is there not to like? Unique Varietals Wine Club (many benefits) Food On-Site Meat Program (beef variety) Live Music Hayrides (with wine pours) Open Seating Holiday Markets (change with each season) and Pet Friendly! I love their wines, my favorite is the red, Terret Noir. I love their meat, we make baja dogs and pot roasts. And, I love their atmosphere on-site, picnic tables spread out, music in the air and the hayride is sure to be a highlight for all Note: The markets here have an array of quality vendors. The Christmas market example included everything from honey, paint your own ornaments to photos with Santa! Cheers to the New Year! #RanchoGuejito # SanPasqualValley #TerretNoir #BeansandHanks #OnA HayrideTogetherWithYou“

Charlie & Echo Winery • $$
8680 Miralani Dr #125, San Diego

“I have some love for this place in my heart since it was one of my first wine club memberships when I was going to school in San Diego. A really sweet couple owns this place, and they always have a great variety of their own self-made wines. They are always a joy to chat with, and they also try their best to do all sorts of fun collaborations and events where they pair their wines with various meals. It's always fun to come through! The place is located in a small plaza in a converted warehouse, and the surrounding shops are also very fun to check out. They're also dog friendly if you want to take your dog to go wine tasting with you, and also it's pretty fun to pet the regulars' dogs as they come by. They always have some really interesting experimental drinks to try out. If you're into really conventional stuff this place probably isn't for you, but if you're willing to experiment then this place is it!“

“My wife came here for date night, and it was spectacular. The breathtaking views make this a true hidden gem. The wine was good the service was great, they even have cozy blankets for you to get warm. Live music on weekends. It reminded me of Valle De Guadalupe down in Baja, except you don't have to cross the border, it's only a quick drive under 30 minutes for us.“

Domaine Artefact Vineyard & Winery Wineries • $$
15406 Highland Valley Rd, Escondido

“Wow! We loved our visit to Domaine Artefact yesterday. Glen was our guide to all of the wines and we were blown away by so many of them - the Viognier, Roussanne, Mourvèdre (jaw dropping!), the Syrahs. I could keep going. The patio space was gorgeous and perfect for a lovely afternoon. Honorable mentions to Stevie, Roger, and the winery dog Sir Tankerton for creating such a welcoming, beautiful space for us. We live out of state but can’t wait to plan our next trip to return to Domaine Artefact.“
