Gunter's Restaurant 1057 El Camino Real, South San Francisco American • $

“There are very few restaurants left that are like this in the Bay Area. What makes this place special?

It's not the delicious food. It's not the large portions. It's not the ample parking Andreas access. Maybe it's the 70s retro vibes?

It must be a combination of all the above AND the amazing staff. When I dine here, the staff always makes me feel like family. Or maybe a cherished customer?

I like this place.”

“great coffee ☕ nice ambiance”

4.4 Superb74 Reviews

“I love this cafe. The team is outstanding despite some shortcomings. They truly make it up. For example: the place has no AC. It’s great most of the time unless it’s very hot, which has been the case lately. I haven’t met the owner yet. I would suggest changing their bread. The bread they use for the sandwiches just isn’t up to their standards. Overall, awesome coffee. Everyone on the team is just outstanding and patient. Keep up the great work!”

Esposto's Delicatezza 701 Gateway Blvd, South San Francisco Sandwich Shop • $

“First time here, had the French dip sandwich, it was good, the au jus was very tasty, slightly thicker than usual, the bread was okay, but would be better on a sourdough crusty roll that would hold the au jus better and not get so soggy.”

4.6 Superb28 Reviews
Cafe Bunn Mi 226 Grand Ave, South San Francisco Vietnamese • $

“The sandwich is good. The overly sweet and commercial sauce masked the taste of the crispy chicken. Tasty roll with shrimp and fresh mint. Service that leaves something to be desired when placing the order. The lady who took our order should have had a smile and a friendlier approach. It was unpleasant. The restaurant has Wi-Fi but that is not accessible to customers. It was a categorical no to our request.”

Taqueria Celaya 608 Linden Ave, South San Francisco Mexican • $

“Living just two blocks away, I made it a weekly ritual to dine here, and it remains my absolute favorite spot for street tacos. While I miss the salsa bar, a casualty of the pandemic, it was heartening to find the tacos tasting just as delicious as they did six years ago during my recent work trip. It's reassuring to see that this gem is still thriving.”

Dumpling Empire 216 Cypress Ave, South San Francisco Chinese • $

“Another hole-in-the-wall, underrated but great tasting Northern China food restaurant in Bay area. Hidden away in an alley, minimal decor serving unpretentious noodle, soups, and Chinese pancakes and a lot more. If you're in the neighborhood, you need to give this place a try.?? *They serve most foods in takeout containers. Bypass this and focus on the food. I had to learn this ?”

Little Saigon 7 Linden Ave, South San Francisco Vietnamese • $

“The pho, noticeably fragrant. 20 hours of simmering evident in the deepness of taste, buttery from the marrow drawn from bones. Clean and translucent broth, an indicator of quality. The wait time, a result of perfectly boiled-to-order rice noodles. What’s missing in decor is over-compensated by taste. Come for a rare-find bowl of solid noodle soup — no frills, but very simply delicious.”

“I like this place. Basic, no frills, Hawaiian BBQ. My favorite is the Shrimp Noodle soup. Large bowl of veggies' shrimp and super hot broth. Noodles on the side in the to go orders. Such nice noodles. Cooked perfectly so they finish cooking when you add them to the hot broth. Highly recommended. All of the other Hawaiian BBQ dishes also on the menu. Not much on atmosphere though.”

“Do you remember? We used to have a Denny's in Japantown SF. That place was great for a meal after clubbing and seeing the same people you just partied with. That was the best part, seeing familiar faces. Fast forward to today. Coffee is $4.29. We had the T-bone steak and eggs $23.19, berry vanilla crepe breakfast $17 and chicken fried steak breakfast $18. The food was OK. The service was a bit slow because the place was full at lunchtime. Mike & Ken's Deli 1031 Airport Blvd, South San Francisco Deli • $

“Mike & Ken’s Deli, my son wanted a turkey sandwich, we drove to Little Luca, it was 5:30 PM. The place closed at 4:00PM. We drove around after looking for a sandwich place open, the map suggest to try the Mike & Ken’s Deli. I was happy to see a couple of Cop vehicles outside the deli, (always a good sign that the food is good) there was a few orders ahead and it was 11 minutes for
my turn. My son went for the Turkey and Provolone sandwich on soft roll, they were out of it so we went for the warmed sourdough instead. Nice people making the sandwich with large selection of salads, breakfast and sandwiches. The deli is like a small liquor store serving beer with lottery ticket machine available.”

4.7 Superb39 Reviews

“I don’t normally give 5 star ratings but feel this place deserves it. It’s a hidden gem in downtown South San Francisco that serves authentic, unpretentious Salvadoran (and Mexican) food. The pupusas (we had the ones with pork, cheese and beans) were absolutely delicious and inexpensive. They go well with the house coleslaw and the mild chili sauce. The Salvadoran enchiladas (more like tacos) were very good as well. The best part of this restaurant is the staff, who are warm, generous, and kind. They really make you feel this is neighborhood place. We will definitely return to sample more items on the menu.

Parking: Paid street parking in front of the restaurant”

“Food is excellent as we ordered tacos and a torta. We ordered the special namesake torta and it was very good and large. It had hot dogs on it and all sorts of other ingredients. But the winner was both the pollo and al pastor tacos with real good sauce and it was moist and delicious. I would recommend ordering it spicy as medium was very mild. It’s a food truck kitty corner from the see’s factory on El Camino. All the tortillas are made fresh on the spot.”

“I've been staying and working in South San Francisco this week without a car. Have dined there for lunch 2 days in a row now, and both days I also brought back dinner to my hotel for the evening. Everything has been delicious with fresh ingredients. Really creative and elevated offerings for a quick service restaurant. The salmon was especially amazing! I had 2 really dismal experiences earlier in the week with Doordash and only wish I had tried Foundry & Lux sooner. I'll be back tomorrow before heading back home on Saturday 😀”

Los Metates 237 Lux Ave, South San Francisco Mexican • $

“Is a good Hidden Gem of South City. There are lots of taquerias, and some of them have their own niche, Los metates is no different. This place makes their own sauces, Albeit the variety of salsas is not so vast as what you would say a Pancho Villa would have, but the food quality of the meats and how they prepare everything is second-to-none! It's a very good high quality taqueria!!!”

“Amazing craft roasted coffee. Owner Marcel and the baristas always take time to tell you about the roast and suggest a blend. If you're familiar with Ikon from a farmer's market, it's definitely worth a trip to the cafe, which is located in the roastery. The pour-overs (only available at the cafe) and the chill atmosphere make the cafe my favorite go-to coffee place.”

“Good chicken tenders - piping hot and crispy. Fries are sorta meh - not crispy enough and a little too thick for my liking. Dipping sauces have nice variety and the Star sauce and truffle aioli were both delicious. Ordered from a kiosk so basically no human interaction.”

Denny's 10 Airport Blvd, South San Francisco Diner • $

“Do you remember? We used to have a Denny's in Japantown SF. That place was great for a meal after clubbing and seeing the same people you just partied with. That was the best part, seeing familiar faces. Fast forward to today. Coffee is $4.29. We had the T-bone steak and eggs $23.19, berry vanilla crepe breakfast $17 and chicken fried steak breakfast $18. The food was OK. The service was a bit slow because the place was full at lunchtime. Overall, not bad. Good job crew at Denny's.”
