L & D Catering and Bistro Bistros • $
110 Old County Rd, Brisbane

“Even though the "Open" LED sign was turned off, L&D Bistro is actually open. I was the only customer at noon and then it became 1/2 full at 12:30pm. The thing about restaurants with the word "bistro" in the name always puts a smile on my face. It reminds me of the old TV sitcom Three's Company where Jack Tripper owned Jack's Bistro. That show was hilarious. There's none of that wackiness here though. I had the fried shrimp & calamari $13 as my appetizer. That was good. They put a bed of tomato red sauce on the bottom with some capers. It would have been better if there were tarter sauce available. Chef's choice I guess. It was still good. For my entree, I took advantage of the lunch special $14.50, which comes with a beer or a soft drink. My grilled Angus top sirloin steak came out well done'ish, even though I ordered it medium. It is challenging, to say the least, to cook that thin piece of meat right. Regardless, still good. It took about 35 minutes for the entree to come out if you have a limited timed lunch break like I do. You pay at the cashier when you are done, which is more efficient. Service was excellent.“

“I have lived in Brisbane for 3 decades now. When my kids were younger, this was a regular spot for them after school for nachos with everything or for family dinners or occasional weekend breakfast. Since they have grown, I don't go as often, but drop in from time to time. I work long hours, generally getting back to town late, plus my big meal of the day is lunch and I generally don't eat an evening meal. This spot has a lovely atmosphere and Rafael is the nicest/kindest man! As an aside, he is also a wonderful supporter of many of the non-profits in Brisbane, so he is well loved and appreciated by the residents. I stopped in recently and ordered pozole, which I had never had here before. I can vouch for the menudo being great though. To my delight, the pozole was AMAZING!!! The to-go bag was packed with rolled up warm tortillas, a sliced whole lime wrapped in foil and small containers full of chopped up raddish, cabbage, an onion and fresh parsley blend, hot sauce (YUM!) and then chips and fresh salsa/pico de gallo as well. The pozole so knocked my socks off that I went back to get it again, this last Sunday, but he said he had sold out the day before... due to it being a popular order during cold/wet weather. He said he would have some this week, so I stopped in last night and bought two big containers - again, absolutely delicious! I finished a half containter last night and brought the unopened one into work today to share with my coworker, who says pozole is her favorite soup of all time, that her family makes it often as well, and she gave this one high praise and even went back for seconds. I am hoping Rafael keeps this as a regular on his menu as I can see myself ordering this weekly, in bulk, just to have in the fridge for lunch or dinner over a few days. Happy to know easy and friendly access to this deliciousness exists so close to home for me... but it would be worth the drive as well!“

“Mike our server was energetic, friendly, and informative. Really excellent. The food was all delicious and the servings generous. The menu is "Latin American fusion". E.g. arepa de pollo, overflowing with fried chicken, avocado, and other goodies. One of us had the chicken ahi soup and loved it. Another was delighted with his thin sliced beef (under especiales on the menu). We had both the plantain appetizers, which were very different from each other and delicious. Tarta de Alfajores was incredible and the cheesecake also yummy. The decor was interesting and bright. Our only issues were very high noise level at times (but not the whole time) from happy customers' conversations and slightly slow service, which we attributed to the fact the place was completely full (and for which our server apologized, unprompted). We will definitely go back! It's a very small place, and we were unable to reserve online for the time we wanted, but successful in person. I wish I had taken more pictures of the food, but it looked and tasted so good I didn't think of it until dessert.“

“This place is a ridiculous gem of a spot. Rather unassuming from the outside, but inside is a super focused, stylish and capable kitchen turning out a small menu of greatness. It almost goes without saying that this is not grocery store rotisserie chicken. You actually get crispy skin here, non generic seasoning and nosiness throughout. It's also served with fresh mint and cilantro, and all the chimichurri you can stand. The sides are impeccable with next level roasted broccoli and Brussels, both also served with herbs and bright sauces. All wrapped it up with really great service. Date night-level ambiance too! Only thing is you need to be ready for stinky leftovers because the amount of cruciferous veggies (cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli) you can get, but it's worth it.“

“If the breakfast sandwich at Iggy's were a movie, it could win an Oscar and all the ingredients would be nominated in their categories. The romantic lead must be the roast pork, mildly seasoned with "Middle Eastern ingredients," the man behind the counter said. Za'atar? Harissa? You got me. The love interest would be the eggs, lightly stirred and perfectly rendered. The wise 3rd party who keeps their relationship together would be the Rize Up Sourdough, a find in itself, perfectly toasted, soft in parts and crunchy in others. Arugula, tomato, red onion, and aioli round out the cast and each one hits a note of perfection. I'm only sad because I'm too full to eat another one right now. Not that it matters but the service is super-professional. They could throw the food at me from a passing Segway and I'd be back. Both the man who took my order and brought it out to me, and the owner Anna, checked in to see how things were. Why is it that when there's a problem no one checks, and when things are perfect, someone asks? (I know why). Also great ambiance, a quiet table outside on a beautiful spring day in our city. Some vintage easy soft jazz on the speakers, the song that played as I downed the last bite was Johnny Mathis' "Stairway to the Stars." He grew up just blocks from Iggy's. Coincidence, or just a perfect harmonic convergence? Go get an Iggy's breakfast sando and you be the judge.“

The Kefta was delicious with the caramelized onions seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg (?). Really good. The tangy side salad was a nice counter-point to the Kefta. The hummus was top drawer and sprinkled generously with paprika. The only disappointment was the pita which was a bit dry and appeared (and tasted) "store bought." Taking off a star for that. “As a pizza connoisseur, when I heard about Roman style pizza, 'pinsa', with a different dough, I was immediately curious. As they note on their website, pinsa dough is made from a combination of soy flour, rice flour, and wheat flour, creating a crust that is light yet crunchy and satisfying. We ordered the Formaggio di Capra e Spinaci for some greens to go with, and then got the Quattro Formaggi and Prosciutto e Fichi for our pinsas.I find salads from pizza places to be very hit or miss; and Gusto Pinsa's salad was certainly a hit. The salad was perfectly dressed - it had a ton of flavor with the dressing, tomatoes, goat cheese, cranberries and walnuts coming together to provide an interesting textural contrast, with a nice hit of black pepper. The pinsas were the star of the meal though, as expected. Although I'm not the biggest fan of cheese only pizzas, the Quattro Formaggi was excellent! It was super cheesy and salty (in the perfect way), and the splotches of sauce provided nice balance to the saltiness of the cheese. The Prosciutto e Fichi was the preferred pinsa by myself and my partner, with the prosciutto and fig glaze providing a nice saltiness and sweetness that contrasted very well with the Quattro Formaggi. If you haven't tried Roman style pinsa yet, what are you waiting for? These pinsas were delicious and somehow felt much lighter than eating a regular pizza. We will be back!“

“Tasty authentic ramen. Lovely staff. Serves alcohol, but it's not on the menu, so make sure you ask. Know that when you choose meat, you'll only get one type (i.e. fuku chicken karaage ramen does not come with pork from the base, which is not clear on the menu). Would come back again.“

“Absolutely fantastic sandwiches! Huge selection of breads, meats, cheeses etc and they have a vegan salami which is delicious! Plus they offer a vegan mayo for no additional charge. It can be a little overwhelming, just take your time - the board tells you everything. If you go at lunch on a weekday expect a line but the workers are super nice and fast. And of course there's not anywhere to sit inside - this is a deli! Just take your sandwich and be happy Highly recommend if you're in the area.“

“I love Valencia Street restaurants, so this one has always been on my bucket list. Luckily, it did not disappoint! Super cute seating outside with the lights and solid pizza to satisfy a craving. As an appetizers, we got the butternut squash arancini ($13.50), which were unique to me with good flavor and texture. For pizzas, we shared the Burrata Red Pie ($24) and Clam White Pie ($24). I enjoyed the clam one more because it was more special and did a great job capturing the flavor. The pizzas are a bit pricey for the size, but I say that as someone from the east coast who has just never gotten used the pizza prices here. I still prefer some pizza spots in North Beach more, but I really enjoyed the different toppings and options here!“

The yogurt Greek yogurt was just the way to end this visit to the airport. It’s a must try for me.“

Food preparation is consistent year after year. The bar menu is progressively being updated and now includes more than the robust wine menu that has always been available.Unassuming atmosphere. Good music in the evenings on the weekend. Nice covered back patio. Good space for parties.Very hard working owner and staff. There is very little turnover.Try it!“

“Really great pizza with a crispy, chewy crust cooked to perfection (got that "leoparding" as the pizza geeks call it) and a bunch of different pies ranging from traditional NY style to a great looking lamb and sumac topping we'll be back to try. We also had SUCH a great cheesecake for dessert. And, the wine list is well appointed with great notes on every glass and bottle, the espresso coming out with our neighbors' dessert smelled great, and the folks working here were soooo nice and so fast to swing by the table to ask if we needed anything. Cozy and friendly inside, full of cheerful locals - a great place for a Saturday date or a quick meal on a weeknight. Maybe my new #1 favorite pizza place in SF. We'll be back over and over!“
