The Getaway Cafe 3140 US-50, South Lake Tahoe Brunch • $

“The Getaway Cafe is a small restaurant, serving breakfast and lunch, tucked in the woods off U.S. Highway 50 in Meyers, CA, in the Lake Tahoe basin. The restaurant advertises "alpine comfort cuisine" and has been voted as Lake Tahoe's best breakfast and lunch restaurant. The dining room is fairly small, comfortable, rustic and was very warm, thanks to the fireplace. As the restaurant has achieved a reputation for amazing cuisine, the dining room fills up quickly. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. You'll be seated and given a menu, and the friendly staff will treat you like family. From the "Best of the Best" section of the breakfast menu, I went with "The Morning After." Now... that was appropriate, as I'd been up since 04:00 on this Thursday morning. The menu describes this fine breakfast as, "One biscuit topped with two eggs and homemade sausage gravy, with your choice of bacon or sausage links; served with your choice of potatoes. Of course I went with hash browns for my choice of potatoes. Eggs are fried your way, and I went with sunnyside up, as eggs fried that way work well with hash brown potatoes and gravy. I chose sausage links over bacon. Oh yeah! The meal began with a large fresh, in-house baked biscuit, covered in some of the best sausage gravy in El Dorado County or wherever. The menu advertises "one" biscuit, but the "one" biscuit was large and simply did the job. The biscuit was covered with country gravy, two fried eggs were on top of the biscuit, and most of the eggs were covered in gravy. The gravy was thick, rich, seasoned with pepper, and had lots of chunks of sausage. Topping the biscuit and the eggs... this was simply an "oh my" moment! And the hash brown potatoes... I'm still thinking about them as they were as good as it gets. The hash browns were deep fried to a perfect, golden brown on the outside, and white, tender and chewy inside. I loved the amazing crispy outside, that boasted a great "crunch," and the tender inside. The chef has talent, as these hash brown potatoes are the breakfast potatoes that "foodies" dream about. Two links of sausage complimented the meal and helped to make this "The Morning After" breakfast delicious. I simply LOVED this amazing breakfast! All I can say is when you're in the Lake Tahoe Basin, and you're interested in an amazing breakfast The Getaway Cafe should be on your menu. I can't judge what is the best breakfast in the Lake Tahoe area... but I CAN say that the friendly service, the alpine atmosphere and "The Morning After" breakfast I enjoyed not only made my morning, but it made my entire day. When you're in Meyers, CA, and you're looking for an amazing breakfast or lunch, check out The Getaway Cafe. You'll love this fine alpine diner.”

“We loved this chic and friendly brewery. We were killing some time before dinner and decided to chill out here after a long day of skiing. We got there before happy hour really started. Folks were starting to trickle in so we grabbed some seats and tried their local brews. We started out with him getting the Hazy IPA and I got the Lakeview Blond. I loved it and he loved his. Next thing we know, we called the restaurant and canceled our reservation because the food here smelled so good. We caved. I had the tomato basil soup and an order of pretzels and he had the Reuben. We were SO pleased. The beer pretzel and soup combo was often. I didn't like the cheese dip - sort of tasted like chicken and not enough cheese and the mustard was seed mustard. Wish they had a nice German mustard but starving skiers are not really all that picky. My stomach said "Shut up" to my brain and my hands were on automatic tearing up those beautiful pretzels and dipping them into my soup. I'm drooling now just thinking about it. Last but not least, our server was like family. So friendly, welcoming, polite, thorough, responsive and easy on the eyes (Argentinian). By the time I left, I was ready to adopt him! So sweet to us. Thanks for a great meal after a fantastic day of spring skiing.”

Cafe Fiore 1169 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe Italian • $$$

“We had a 745pm reservation on a Friday night. We arrived a bit early and our table was not yet ready and since the place is really small we had to wait outside and the heater was out of gas so we were out in the cold (it was raining and was 39°F) for about 10 minutes. We were asked if we wanted bread - garlic bread or another option - we ordered the garlic bread which was good when it came out warm and fresh, however, got cold easily. I do not think it is worth $10. We ordered the soft-shelled crab for our appetizer and it was amazing ! I ordered the Linguine Fra Diavolo - it had adequate amount of seafood in it, the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and had great flavor. My boyfriend ordered the Bistecca alla Veneziana - it was a huge portion as it came with 2 steaks. The filet mignon was cooked as ordered (medium rare), however, they were not that tender but still okay. We Got the pear for dessert and this was very delicious! Servers that night, Ed and Jennifer, were nice and friendly Price is reasonable considering the size of the portions. Please note that the bill does not show an itemized list of the order - it has several lines of just prices. The place has 6 tables so make sure you call to make reservations - there is no option of doing online reservation. There is a parking lot. We will definitely return to this place the next time we visit South Lake Tahoe.”

It was a spot that I went to for lunch when I arrived with my friends on the first day of our trip to Tahoe simply because it was convenient. Yet, my whole group kept going back for an after skiing snack and for their pretty impressive drinks. If you are staying in the Hilton, take advantage of having this spot in your hotel. Both are about perfect. Uber back to the cabin perfect if you have a few. We've had the burgers here. Both are delicious. Full side of fries or salad makes for a complete, but not too healthy meal. We're up in Tahoe a lot, and this is now our favorite place to go. Order at the bar, take a table and wait for the waiter or waitress to serve you. Locals- they have a special too. Ask about it!”

They were able to grab a table for me.Due to them being reserved all night, I got a table at the Cocktail Corner. I originally ordered at the bar (as was communicated to me due to the full reservations). Though regardless, Jenna (a bartender), still gave me table service throughout my experience. The oysters were divine, and Jenna even ran next door to their sister restaurant to grab me some crackers for my oysters. The asparagus mushroom ravioli was so unique and delicious (I highly recommend). Lastly, I finished with the Citrus Olive Oil Strawberry Shortcake and was not disappointed.I would highly recommend this establishment, and I will definitely be back.”

“Excellent Thai restaurant in South Lake Tahoe! Right when you walk in you notice the Thai-inspired ambiance that gets you excited for the meal ahead. Food Rundown: Hangover Udon with Pork - Pretty epic mix of flavors and a very hearty portion. Chicken Pad Thai: Classic sweet flavor, feel free to ask for it a little spicier to offset the sweetness. Panang Curry with Brown Rice: My favorite dish of the three. Deep curry flavor that we couldn't get enough of. Pro Tip: Ask you server for additional sauces to get a sampling of pickled jalapeño, peppers, and other way to add some kick your dish. My only critique is that the 4 person table my group sat at was a little too snug so try to size up on the table if you can.”

“Selected this place as it was in close proximity to our lodging after a long day on the slopes. We were exhausted and wanted a place where we could walk to and wind down with a cocktail and a view. We ordered a few apps and 2 drinks to split amongst our party of two. Service was prompt and friendly and our food was better than expected. Mahi Tacos: 4/5 the fish was nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked and paired well with the pineapple salsa. I found myself wishing it had a spicy aioli to balance it out. Buffalo cauliflower: 5/5 this was our favorite bite of the night. A flawless marriage of crunch from the crispy batter, spicy flavor from the buffalo seasoning and cooling effect of the cucumber. I would eat this every day if I could and it's something I'm going to try making at home. Burrata: 4/5 we were expecting the dish to be cold but it came out in a VERY HOT crock with herbs and tomatoes with bread to dip. The cooked outside of the cheese had a mild rubbery texture which made it difficult to cut through, but the flavors were so good! We soaked up every bit of the cheesy mixture with the bread leaving no trace behind. We frequent Tahoe from the Bay Area and I would definitely add this place to my list of recommendations to friends and family who visit the area.”
