Chongqing Lao Zao 重慶老灶 37-04 Prince St, Flushing Hot Pot • $$$

“It’s always a good time at CQLZ. Be warned that the wait is long, usually 2-3 hours Friday-Sunday, esp at dinner, so you should just come out down your name and then explore Flushing. The larger the group, the longer the expected wait (eg if >6, they only have 3 tables that size, so it takes a while). Beautiful interior reminiscent of an old Chinese village. The broth here is delicious. If you like spicy, the hot broth got you covered with however hot you want it. If you don’t like spicy, the tomato broth and the mushroom broth are both solid, with the mushroom broth being more delicate. The meat and vegetables are all pretty fresh, and you should probably get 3-5 things per person depending on how hungry you are. The sauce is make as you want, and they have some recs for combinations at the bottom of the menu if you get overwhelmed with the options.Definitely worth a try. This is our go to hot pot spot.”

“I found Java Day Cafe while out in Queens this past Monday. I had a few hours to kill in between meetings and was looking for a cafe to WFH. At the owners recommendation, I ordered The Frenchie, as well as two hash browns (hey don't judge, I was starvin marvin!). The Frenchie consisted of 2 pieces of delicious cinnamon french toast with sausage, egg and cheese nestled inside. I washed it down with a delicious large coffee with almond milk. I chose a table by the window, which had 2 outlets below, so I was able plug away on my laptop and enjoy my food, with no low battery stress. I ended up having three coffees during my stint there and lucky for me, their bathroom was super spacious and clean... love that! All in all, happy to have stumbled upon this awesome Flushing/Auburndale gem!”

There are wine bottles hanging directly above the bar. The bookcases on the right wall are divided by picture frames. There are small tables and high chairs in each frame. Lighting made of deer antlers hangs from the ceiling. You can see it everywhere. Ingenuity.”

Satay

Satay 46-01 Kissena Blvd, Flushing Malaysian • $$
46-01 Kissena Blvd, Flushing

“Satay is a decent restaurant that I frequently visit, particularly for its authentic Malaysian cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance sets a comfortable and inviting tone, albeit quite standard and nothing out of the ordinary. The service, much like the ambiance, is typical and straightforward, without any particular aspects standing out or being exceptional. However, where Satay truly shines is in its food offerings. The menu boasts a selection of dishes that are undeniably delightful and satisfying. One of my favorite dishes is the Chicken Curry mee. This dish is a culinary delight with its robust coconut curry flavor that encapsulates the true essence of Malaysian cuisine. The potatoes in the dish are cooked to perfection, tender yet firm, complementing the flavorful chicken. This dish is a real treat and a must-try for anyone visiting.Next is the Seafood egg scramble chow fun. This dish is an interesting concoction that beautifully blends the characteristics of soup and sauce. The result is a smooth, easy-to-eat dish that is both comforting and mouth-watering. The seafood component adds an extra layer of flavor and texture, making the dish even more appealing. The Chili chicken, another dish on their menu, is a bold and spicy choice. While it tends to get soggy quickly, the chicken features the fiery kick of birds eye chili and a generous serving of stir-fried shallots. The combination of flavors in this dish is simply delightful, offering a true taste of Malaysian cuisine. While Satay may not be classified as a top-tier restaurant, it's an excellent place to visit if you're in the mood for some authentic Malaysian dishes. Its charm lies in its simplicity and focus on delivering excellent food, making it a reliable choice for a casual dining experience.”

The grandma taking our order made the experience extra heartwarming. We came here a second time, and the worker, who I would think is the son, was just as kind. I'm so glad I got to try their Donkatsu Roll ($10). Fried pork cutlets wrapped in rice and seaweed belong together harmoniously, despite my initial skeptical thought of crispy breaded batter against soft rice. I wasn't expecting the Omelette Rice ($15) to taste so good, but the egg was the perfect consistency, adding an extra creaminess to the fried rice. This would be my go-to whenever I crave Korean food in Flushing.”

The service is alright only reason i say this is because the first couple times was with these Spanish guys that if asked how are you , good morning , they'll reply i'm good etc the typical small talk. Theirs a Ukrainian guy or i believe he's the owner pretty big dude that isn't friendly as in in greeting customers or just asking how are you etc . “I grew up in Korea and Yupdduk is my favorite ttoppoki franchise. I've tried 신전, 죠스, 조폭, 미미, etc and I always crave Yupdduk the most. I am grateful for this location but this location has definitely made its modifications.Pros:- I liked that the mild is actually mild. It's not non-spicy as this franchise is known for super spicy food but the mild from Korea is still unbearably spicy even though I am a spicy food enthusiast. So the spicy level is spicy but still manageable.- I like that they have smaller portions as the original franchise only offers huge portions.- The rice cakes are actually good texture.- Food so far I've tried has been a positive experience but nothing crazy mindblowing. The flavors are not as good as the original ones.- Service was good. The server was very polite.Cons:- It's not cheap.- We ordered the Spam Mayo Rice and I'd like to suggest a few things. There is too much mayo. It covers the entire top and it just overpowers everything. I think adding some sliced scrambled eggs and going halfway with mayo will make this dish worth to order each time. Has good potential.- I wish the ttoppoki flavors were more closer to the original for us paying such high price with expectations of the original franchise experience.Overall, I will be coming back when I crave ttoppoki and would like to try other things as well.”

“The final stop on our 2023 Birria Passport for my partner and I! We stopped in on a Sunday evening, and walked into a restaurant full of smoke. Not sure if they'd just had a fire or something burned, but we were shocked to step into a cloud of smoke and condensation on all the windows. The decor and ambiance leaves much to be desired and wasn't the cleanest, but this can be overlooked for good food. Service was a bit odd - at the counter, the two workers were bantering while we tried to order and I had to repeat my order back three times to make sure it was right. We ordered one of each kind of taco and meat, and my partner got a burger. The burger? DIVINE. And unique, and flavorful. Like seriously, come here for that alone! Their fries were surprisingly good as well. Their birria didn't blow me away like other MN spots, and we didn't get consomme since we only got two birria tacos, but still very good. I loved their Al Pastor! Their carne asada tasted more like ground hamburger than steak, and I wasn't blown away by the carnitas. I wish there was a bit more on the tacos for $4.50 a pop. Their salsa lineup is self serve which I love and great variety of flavors! TLDR: UNREAL burger, great al pastor, great salsas, mediocre ambiance and service. Next time, I'd take a burger and a few tacos to go!”

“The house special fried rice was spot on; loaded with ingredients and the rice itself was cooked right. The egg roll was good too.I almost didn’t come here because of the reviews, but figured since there aren’t that many reviews to begin with I’ll give it a shot. Glad I did. This is takeout and delivery only, so anyone complaining about soggy sesame chicken or general tso’s should know that those saucy fried dishes rarely travel well. That being said, Jade should take that into consideration and give the sauce on the side. Next time I stop in I’ll try one of those and see how it fares.Oh yeah, and extra points for tossing in a fortune cookie. Not many places do that anymore.”
