Kajiken 112 S B St, San Mateo Ramen • $$

“Had early dinner at kajiken on a Friday night around 530pm. There was no wait but a line started to form as soon as we got seated. I got the homura and it was good - noodles tasted fresh with good chew. I would say this dry ramen has similarities to Taiwanese minced pork noodles. On the table are condiments (garlic, chili oil, vinegar, sesame oil, sesame seed) for you to adjust to your taste. I think i prefer regular ramen with broth; i was missing the super rich soup that comes to mind when i think "ramen". Having said that, it was a good dish if you're in the mood for it.”

Daeho kalbijjim & beef soup 213 2nd Ave, San Mateo Korean • $$
213 2nd Ave, San Mateo

“I've tried the Daeho in japantown SF and I've had the Daeho in San Jose...but I feel like this Daeho tastes the best??? I'm not sure if it's the meat quality, portion sizes, flavor or what but this is my favorite location out of all the Bay Area locations.Daeho specializes in galbi-jjim, which is Korean braised beef short ribs in the most delicious sauce. You MUST get the cheese on top because they torch it at your table and it makes for a great IG story haha. I also like to get rice cakes in it. The large size can feed a table of four. The spice level is kind of inconsistent among the chains or even on certain days. I usually get spicy and I thought it wasn't spicy, during my most recent trip. (Maybe my spice tolerance went up? Maybe the chef just made it less spicy?) If you're unsure what spice level you are, I would err on the side of less spicy because you can always add spicy to it later.Aside from the beautiful galbi-jjim, I think everything else on the menu is pretty good. I like to pair my galbi-jjim order with a cold noodle to offset the heat. I think the soups here are so good. Their galbi-tang (short rib soup) is perfect on a cold day.”

“Service is always polite and efficient. Food arrives quickly, and it's always perfect food for cool winter evenings. The spicy ramen w/ added egg, and standard tsukemon are our gotos. Plenty of filling fatty flavors and textures.Adding sides, appetizers or the extra meat makes it a Lot of food, with no room left over for one of the many dessert-centric walkable places. We go early in the evening, as even years after opening, this place has a line (worth it) even in the middle of the week. It's consistent, full of flavor, deep comfort food. One of my top 5 in downtown San Mateo”

“I had the scallops with the risotto and corn. No sauce. 3 others in the party had the same dish with the sauce, none of them finished the meal with that sauce on the risotto. They should rethink that dish, it was sooooo good without it. The restaurant is too expensive to serve a meal to a party plated as described on the menu and no one like it. “It's been a while since I've eaten here. I've forgotten how big their selection is and how good their food is. This family owned restaurant has been around since 1983, they must be doing something right! Their portions are big enough to feed an army. We walked in with an army, 10 hungry teens, 13 adults and a 10 year old. We ordered pizza, pasta and apps. Nothing beats carb loading on a cold Saturday night. They also offer lots of Mediterranean dishes in this Greek inspired restaurant.”

“Went for Breakfast Food - 4/5. The meat lovers sandwich, while having decent ingredients, had a very dry texture. Bacon was crispy and the ham scramble was on the drier side. Bread was toasted plainly, which added to the dry nature of the entire sandwich. The cheese added some softness, but textural wise, it could've used some variety. Hash browns were browned well with a nice bite. Service - 4/5. You order from the counter first than they bring out the food. Quick and friendly. Value - 3/5. Breakfast sandwiches come with a good amount of filling and hash brown sides. Price is on the expensive side for what they are, being $16.50 for most. Parking - Mall Lot (Free)”

“This is a culinary delight and an absolute MUST dining experience in the super quaint "Main Street" area of San Mateo. The staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming and attentive - as if you were honored guests in their home. The food was incredible - truly something for everyone - and delicious. The wine list is extensive - they offer Caymus Cab by the glass; a rare occurence. The cocktails were well crafted. Start to finish...this was a meal and an establishment to remember. I will be back! You need to check this place out!!Parking: Immediately in front of the restaurant is a walkable promenade (no vehicular traffic) - 2nd & 3rd Streets offer limited street parking, some of which is restricted - much is taken up by restaurant outdoor dining "parklets". YOUR BEST BET is the Main Street Parking Garage. You only pay until 6 PM...it is free until 2 AM thereafter.Kid-friendliness: Not so much. This is definitely a "hey, mom & dad, take a few hours off! Get a sitter!" kinda place.Wheelchair accessibility: Accomodating - but give them a heads up ahead of time. One of our guests had a walker and staff graciously helped her get situated, and stowed the walker while we dined.”

“Last night, I had the pleasure of dining at Wakuriya in San Mateo, and I must say, the experience was quite remarkable. From the moment I stepped in, the serene and welcoming ambiance set the stage for what was an exquisite culinary journey. The service at Wakuriya was impeccable. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable dining experience. Each course of the kaiseki menu was presented beautifully, showcasing a blend of traditional Japanese culinary artistry with subtle Californian influences. The highlights for me were the braised sea bass with its delicate yuzu gelee and the perfectly cooked Wagyu beef, which was both tender and flavorful. However, while the food and service were exceptional, I have some reservations about its Michelin star status. The quality and presentation were top-notch, but I felt that the overall experience, while delightful, did not fully align with other Michelin-starred restaurants I’ve visited in terms of creativity and culinary innovation.Additionally, considering the price point, I found Wakuriya to be slightly overpriced. While I understand and appreciate the quality of ingredients and the skill involved in preparing such dishes, the cost seemed a bit steep when weighed against the overall dining experience. In conclusion, Wakuriya is undoubtedly a great restaurant that I would recommend for those seeking high-quality Japanese cuisine in San Mateo. The serene atmosphere and meticulously prepared dishes make for a memorable dining experience. However, if you’re looking for a Michelin star-level experience, you might want to temper your expectations slightly, especially considering the price. Nonetheless, Wakuriya remains a gem in San Mateo’s culinary scene, and I am glad to have experienced its offerings.”

This place does it legit . Every single ingredient had flavor in it. And it was the first time I had a manglonada.Don't know how they get mangos so sweet , but they have all the classic ingredients. You can tell from the neighborhood that it has to be legit . Latin population in the area would hate it if they were washed out places like the ones only serving calorie conscious crowds.Glad i was able to discover this shop. Super super recommended”

“At the beginning of the month, we celebrated a friend's b day here & it was an experience I will never forget. I love the casual upscale atmosphere with friendly staff & wonderful food. The polenta some creamy & some of the best I have ever had; this was an appetizer in the multicourse dinner. The frittata was wonderful with fresh vegetables & cheese. The ravioli was aldentae with a wonderful beef filling & zesty marinera sauce. The antipasti was wonderful with olives, salami, & a wonderful assortment of cheeses & bread. My prime rib was wonderful; a little dry, but tender for the most part with freshly sauted green beans. For dessert, our cake was wonderful. I rounded it off with a Peroni & some red wine. Everyone in our party loved everything. The Italian music in the background & piano polayer were both divine. We enjoyed some dancing to some popular songs. It was definitely a night I will never forget & will have to come in for lunch. Keep up the good work guys.”

“My fiancé surprised me with this for Valentine's day and I couldn't be happier! He ordered the omakase box & the tuna box and both were impeccable. The flavors were so unique, the fish was so fresh, and the presentation!! Literally gorgeous. Pick Up: They have pickup locations in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Hayward. The SF location is in the Sunset district! They were on time & super easy to find. Pickup was seamless :) Tuna Box: There were so many new flavor combinations in this box that I haven't tried before and that work so well. For example, truffle and parmesan on tuna!? Both parm & tuna have such strong flavors and I was worried it wouldn't mesh well together but it was so delicious. One of my favorite pieces! One of the pieces had this pate on it, it was perfectly salty and creamy. The otoro piece - SO BUTTERY. Literally tastes like the quality of tuna I had in Japan. Omakase Box: I loved the variety in this box!! It was my first time having raw mini octopus and it had the perfect chew to it. I loved the uni w/ ikura piece, the uni was so fresh and creamy and the ikura burst with flavor. Both boxes come with freshly grated wasabi and a cute soy sauce bottle. The pieces honestly didn't even need soy sauce because they had so much flavor. We'll definitely order from here again!”

We particularly enjoyed the Chicken Thigh with Green Onions, the Bacon Tomato which was bursting with flavour, and the Beef Tongue. We tried the Scallop with Uni skewer, but felt that the flavours didn't work too well with each other. The Curry Gyutan Over Rice dish that we got was a bit disappointing though, as the meat was not that high of quality, so would definitely recommend sticking with ordering just skewers. “My family and I came here on recommendation from another friend that loves Boba. Parking sucks! My family and I were driving in three separate cars, since we just came from dim sum in Millbrae, and trying to find a spot with all of us in the same area was ridiculous on a Sunday afternoon afternoon! Nevertheless, the GPS did not tell us that half of the street on "B St. was closed for the public to walk and kind of like the Covid times, where everything is set up for businesses to eat outdoors. I really like that idea of eating outdoors, but I wish the GPS had updated their system telling us there was no parking. Lol. Once inside the café, everything was so cute and organized. I really liked it! It was a long rectangular restaurant that went all the way back and they even had an upstairs area with a loft that overlooked the register area that we were sitting in below. Since we had a rather large party, we sat outside, and there were at least four tables with chairs all the way around for everybody to sit in. The restaurant next-door seems to be under a change of ownership, so my nephews were able to ply freeze dance in a designated area without bothering anybody. Lol the Boba itself tasted delicious. I got the T8-I think it was with passionfruit and Boba and it was delicious! I always do my Boba without sugar and light ice because I really want to taste the green tea and I figure Boba is already sweet anyways. There was a little bit of a lemon/lime citrus flavor in the Boba itself, which I also loved!! My boyfriend got an easy green tea with just Boba in it and it had this cool drink carrier with a dragon around the top! It was so pretty my nephews always wish they had one too! Lol as their orders came up, each one of them had a cool dragon drink carrier, and they were so proud of their Taiwanese, Chinese, Filipino heritage! I will definitely be back here again to try more of their drinks!! Hee”

They did not skimp on the chicken. Portion sizes are on the smaller side though. One order is good for 2 people with normal appetite. If you have a huge appetite or hungry, an order is good for 1 person.Staff was very friendly. The place is small. Maybe just 6, max 8 tables inside. “Fernando's is a great vibe. The food is delicious. I ordered the prawns ala diabla without mushrooms and onions because I read on the reviews that they put too much. It was great and not too spicy - but I loooove spicy food so maybe it just wasn't caliente enough for me. The ingredients are fresh and tasty. The portions are huge but I happened to finish all of mine I just kept eating it way past my full belly. It came with chicken tortilla soup too which was also great. The chips and salsa alone is sooo good. But I had to pace myself. The ambience is so authentic and also very clean. Love the decor. We came for a birthday celebration and their service was so attentive. This place is perfect for large get togethers or intimate dining.
