Really just had the perfect meal. Thank you for that and all you do to make it happen. On the same level as the food was the service. Our server was as good as it gets. She was genuine, perfect timing every time, not intrusive, and extremely intelligent, top level. She took a bunch of extra time to share her deep knowledge of the menu and give us the ultimate dining experience. Couldn't have been better in anyway. Beyond appreciated. “Delicious food! I took my adults (offspring - can't bring myself to refer to them as children) here for a special dinner. Everyone was so happy with their meal. My son had the bento and enjoyed it all, daughter and hubby had the chef choice sushi flights and really enjoyed everything. I select pieces of sushi, sashimi and rolls that I wanted to try! Every bite was delicious, so good in fact that I added two pieces of the tuna belly sashimi to my hubby's take out order (final four game, you know priorities). Hot tea and miso soup to start, they have a nice selection of Japanese beers. Here's the thing, my kids both have shellfish allergies and additionally my daughter has egg and nut allergies too. Every thing came to the table perfectly, they adjusted their flight and bento accordingly. It's hard to eat out and trust no cross contamination but they've eaten there before without issue. This is huge for me. Great sushi, good service experience and care in food handling! It's a win, win, win!”

“We had an extraordinary experience here—an evening marked by splendid ambience, an attentive server, delectable wine, and flawless gastronomy. From the outset, we indulged in an assortment of appetizers, namely the octopus, calamari, lamb kefte, and crab soup. For the main course, my friend savored the scallop special while I relished the flawlessly prepared lamb loin. Our companions delighted in the steak frites and the red snapper, the day's piscine delicacy. As a grand finale to our night, we concluded with the exquisite goat cheese and honey cheesecake. We cannot laud this establishment enough for its superlative qualities!”

“This place was the first place we went to for drinks. It had a speakeasy vibe to it with the low lighting. Their menu had a few drinks to choose from so we ordered the Marg, PCN, Cold Days In the Sun, and Feelin' Emotions. The drinks came out fairly quickly. The Marg was not bad, the Cold Days In the Sun was good and the Feelin' Emotions was tasty. It definitely was something I could see others try out too. The amount was not too much so it was good. Good place for drinks if you're in the area.”

Mateo Bar de Tapas 109 W Chapel Hill St, Durham Tapas Bar • $$$

“I always struggle to find restaurants that use adequate amounts of spice and flavor. Mateo, however, certainly didn't miss the mark, and every dish was extremely flavorful and decadent. I'm a vegetarian, and there were plenty of options for me, with the fried cauliflower special being my absolute favorite and unlike anything I expected from a cauliflower dish. I also had a beet dish with got cheese that was wonderful. You can't go wrong with their pan con tomate which is an excellent start to the meal. It's a shame I'm not from Durham, because I'd love to come back.”

My go to is their Italian ice or their ice cream cake slice. Everything is delicious, fresh, and creamy (if it’s supposed to be), plus the prices are great for what you get. They have exceptional service as well. There are ice cream shops literally everywhere, but they rarely go beyond “eh, it’s good ice cream.” This place sets and tops the bar, then raises it some more! Worth it.Bun almost started falling apart as soon as I picked it up. My biggest complaint. I went through a few napkins. The toppings were lettuce, a couple tomato slices, pickles, raw diced onions, mustard, ketchup. The onion rings were tasty. Went well with the sauce.I'm coming back here.”

“Everlou is my favorite downtown coffee shop for two reasons: the dogs and the staff. First, it's one of the few coffee shops that allow dogs inside the store. This has been seriously crucial when my power has gone out and I needed to get work done (and also want my dogs to be cool.) Also, they give away pup cups which my dogs love. Second, the staff goes above and beyond to get to know their customers. They remember your face and even when it gets busy I never feel rushed. Oh yeah, and the coffee is great too! The space inside is small and can get crowded so just know you may need to bring a long charging cord.”

“Husband had three of the tacos: asada, birria, and chorizo, and according to him all three were really good. Only the birria was served with two tortillas, but the single tortilla-tacos held up, even with a liberal dose of the two salsas provided. My son had the pollo asado taco, and he rated it 4.5 out of 5 (he's 6 and he's never given something a 5/5, so this is an excellent rating for him). I had the plain quesadilla, because there aren't a lot of vegetarian options, but the acid/heat of the green salsa helped cut through the fat nicely. Pizzeria Toro 105 E Chapel Hill St, Durham Pizza • $$

“I have only started going to Pizzeria Toro in the last 6 months or so. It has instantly become our favorite pizza in the triangle. That means we come to Pizzeria Toro from North Raleigh. We usually come for lunch but on March 26th we came for dinner. It was a friday night and it was bustling. We were immediately seated tho we needed to take a seat at the bar. We were perfectly happy there tho we had no bar drinks. When we come for lunch we usually sit at a table. The noise level is "lively" whenever you come but happy. The staff is very professional and knowledgable, a joy to deal with. If you are not familiar with downtown Durham, and we are still learning, parking is a "bit of a do". When we come at lunch then metered parking is generally available across the street up and down the block. But for the Friday dinner we had to park "around the corner" in front of the Parlour ice cream shop. So parking takes a bit of effort but so far so good. And again, seating has so far been great. Our favorites have been the Pepperoni, the Truffle and the mushroom pizza's. But honestly you can't go wrong with any of them. The night we came the special was an Asparagus salad. We got two pepperoni pizzas, a Mexican coke, and the salad for $59 + tax and tip. Its important to mention the pepperoni is a white sauce not a tomato sauce if that matters to you. The crust is consistently outstanding and really stands out. Mind you I normally strictly a pepperoni and tomato sauce pizza type. But again, the mushroom pizza was outstanding as was the truffle and that is saying something for me to go for a non-pepperoni pizza.”

“Azteca Grill is sooo good. I ordered the Enchiladas Verde (It's my comfort food dish after decades living in Texas). They were totally delicious. Often when I order this dish here in North Carolina, the chicken is chewy and the salsa verde isn't quite right. The chicken in my enchiladas tonight was perfectly tender, and the salsa was exactly as it should be - tangy tomatillo with just the right amount of heat. I had a nice conversation with one of the guys that works there. He told me that the restaurant is totally family-run. His aunt was cooking that night, but his dad, mom, and grandfather also prepare food. I could tell he was really proud of Azteca. They're doing an amazing job, start to finish, including their 99.5 health rating.”

Moe's Original BBQ - Durham 2014 Hillsborough Rd, Durham Barbecue • $

“We had lunch at Moe's again today. It was our third time, and again everything was delicious! We went today to specifically try the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich, the Berto. It was a great deal at $13 for the sandwich, two sides, and a drink (I had the hash brown casserole and banana pudding)! I grew up in Indiana, where breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches are very, very popular, so I've been searching for something similar here in NC, and have yet to find a comparable pork tenderloin sandwich. Moe's sandwich was delicious, and I'm sure we will try it again, but next time I will request a little less seasoning. However, it was outstanding, and I highly recommend it. Thanks, Moe's. We will be back!”

“This is such a great gem of a restaurant. We went for brunch. Food and drinks were creative and delicious. Beyond that, the service was great. Our server was so friendly and kind. My favorite part was that this restaurant takes care of its staff. They have figured out that the front and back of the house people are what keeps a successful restaurant going. If these people are not taken care of, they have to eventually go else where to take care of themselves. The management has figured out that quality people cannot be easily replaced and they make sure that the amazing staff is taken care of. Kudos!!!!!”

“I had been meaning to try this spot for some time. As luck would have it, I was in the area for a different event and convinced the group to try out this spot. First off, you scan the qc code for the menu and to order. No cash was accepted. I didn't have a problem with this, but one of the crew did as they only had cash. We went at about lunchtime but the place was not busy and the workers were very attentive. Overall all, I enjoyed the food. Can it beat out grandma on the island, of course not. But, I liked the offering and was pleased with the visit. Plus, no one beat Grandma. Lol”

“Best authentic Neapolitan margherita pizza in the triangle - you must eat it while it is HOT and FRESH, do not delay(!!) and you will know what I am talking about. Nice airy vibes in Golden Belt near Hi-Wire Brewing and Two Roosters ice cream so can make a whole thing out of it. Service is good, never had any issues - self-seat with paper towel rolls to self-napkin-ize depending on how you eat your pizza. They have a whole little bar station bar for all the traditional fixins too. Also just not sleep on the gelato and they also have small take-home pizzas which are pretty good!!”
