Double Knot 120 S 13th St, Philadelphia Japanese • $$$
120 S 13th St, Philadelphia

“We came here during restaurant week, and the servings are just enough for each member of the group to try. This restaurant serves great food that makes you want to appreciate every bite. Sampan is linked, and this location is typically busy. Since the dining room was downstairs, there was a kind of nice corridor leading to it. You and your group can choose from a small variety of dishes to share at the table during restaurant week, with some items having an additional fee. There was a stronger romantic vibe. Here, the Kobe beef is a great choice.”

They were very accommodating for my gluten sensitivity, and when we called, they took their time to go over the entire menu identifying items they could make gf. The Florist and The Beekeeper were tasty cocktails. We had the meatballs and the smashed & fried potatoes for appetizers, the scallop risotto and chicken with gnocchi for our mains, and then the s’mores pot de crème. Get. Out. The Ranstead Room 2013 Ranstead St, Philadelphia Cocktail Bar • $$$
2013 Ranstead St, Philadelphia

“I've been here a few times, it's a fun place to bring people because of the whole speakeasy vibe. They don't take reservations so it's hit or miss if you can actually get in. Drinks are hit or miss for me too. Over time I've done drinks from the menu and the bartenders choice. I know it sounds silly but I really dislike the ice they use! It's like ice chips which cheapens the drinks, which seems to go against the suave swanky vibe. I got the pickle mule this time though and really liked it.”

Veda - Modern Indian Bistro 1920 Chestnut St, Philadelphia Indian • $$
1920 Chestnut St, Philadelphia

“The food and drinks were good, and the bread basket is totally worth it, especially if you’re sharing with others. Our server was nice, attentive, and welcoming, and she was the best part of the visit. She gave good recommendations, and checked in on us frequently. The restaurant also played a good selection of music which gave it a nice vibe. I wish they put on their physicaly menus that the meat is halal. They have this stated on their website, but not on the physical menu so some of our party was not aware. This would have been a 5-star visit had it not been for the seating arrangement and for what happened at the end of the visit. To give some context, we made a reservation in advance for our party, and you would think that for an advance reservation they would take care with the seating. I was not satisfied with where we were seated - our table and seats were cramped, and there was a table right next to us that could accommodate us better. Our table felt really enclosed, practically holed between 3 sides of walls. We thought the table next to us was perhaps booked for another party and that is why they didn’t seat us there. No. We were wrong. For the entire duration, no one was seated at the table next to us, so I don’t understand why we couldn’t sit there. We would have been more comfortable there. Oh well, nice to know for next time.At the end of our dinner, we had given the server our cards to pay for the check, and while we were waiting for our cards, a guy came over (probably the manager), and basically was ushering us out. Although he was being polite about it, it still soured the taste because of course we will leave after we get our cards back. Shouldn’t he have checked with the server about the status of the table before coming to us and tell us that they need to clean the table for the next group and we need to leave? He said it more diplomatically, but basically using the same words here. It left us a bit shocked because we were ready to leave, just waiting for our cards.”

Pizzeria Beddia 1313 N Lee St, Philadelphia Pizza • $$

“The intent is clear and well executed. It didn't seem like a place that aims to put pizza on a pedestal rather a well put together representation of desired traits specific to the Philadelphia dining scene. The pizza leaned towards a bar pie, that was executed by someone who has a devout understanding of the dough and the other ingredients involved. The soft serve was well spun and tasty. Overall the hype is real and was a real joy to visit!”

“An exceptional dinning experience, but getting in is a bit tricky. The restaurant opens advanced online bookings in intervals of two week blocks, on the Sunday prior. There are two seatings each night, 6:30pm and 8:30pm. If you can’t get a reservation for the released block time, you can request to be added to the wait list. That’s exactly how I received my dinning spot. The experience is intimate, warm and friendly. It truly is like being invited to a friend’s house for dinner, except your friend won’t be serving you these yummy dishes. The food creations are amazing and the courses numerous. The chef announces each dish before it’s served, explaining the ingredients and inspiration. They also provide an extensive wine list and delicious craft cocktails. Highly recommend!”

“Took my wife here during a conference trip to have a nice lunch and I must say the overall experience did not disappoint. We ordered an assortment of different oysters to start with. Sampling the flavor profile of each oyster was not only delicious but extremely fun as a couple. After oysters and wine, my wife ordered the lobster roll and I had the house clam chowder. The lobster was perfectly cooked and the position size was double that of the perfectly toasted and buttery brioche bread it was on. The fries were homemade and very good. I will say that they could have double fried them to make them a bit more crispy but overall very good. The clam chowder was very rich with smoke amounts of bacon, the smokey flavor from the bacon was a nice addition. The waiter was very attentive and took the time to engage and make a human connection, which is much appreciated. Overall, great experience and I would return here in the future.”

“The food was spectacular, the beef stir fry they have (which I was skeptical of when my family ordered, sounded good but sorta basic) was my favorite dish of this year and last year, it was sooooo good!!! It was incredibly flavorful and so tender. To top that off the owner was walking around the room, charming folks and checking in, all the service felt attentive but not invasive or overbearing, I felt incredibly respected and appreciated while there. I told them it was my parent’s wedding anniversary and they complimented them on it multiple times, all of the staff suddenly knew and they got a free appetizer to congratulate them. It really was a special experience from start to finish. I don’t go to a lot of fine dining but I expected the portions to be tiny and the atmosphere to be haughty, it was not! Very bubbly and fun atmosphere, good spacing between our table and others, the portions were perfect and the kitchen was a machine with cranking out spectacular dish after spectacular dish! I am moving out of town soon, but I would come back and eat here as a special event. “The service was excellent. The food was also good, we enjoyed the tasting menu which had some surprising dishes such as the carrot & egg custard. The bread and nduja was also a nice addition. However, we spent over $800 between the two of us with tips included (with the tasting menu priced at $215) which I think is way too overpriced. The wines especially are overpriced, for 150pp I would expect more upscale wines than what was on offered. We ended up going with a Barolo instead which was more reasonable but still $170 for a bottle. For these prices, I would expect Michelin 1 or 2 star quality food, which it wasn't (as nice as our meal was). “Probably some of the best service I've received at a restaurant! The owner checked in a few times and showed us his joint business of a hookah lounge upstairs. We also learned about Ramiz's history and how it's a chain. This location is the first one established in the US. We received complimentary mix appetizer plate of dips and tea! Karişik Soğuk Meze / Mix Appetizer Plate- Hummus, baba ghanoush, labneh, and spicy vegetable dip THE SPICY VEGETABLE DIP IS INCREDIBLE! MUST TRY! Turkish meatballs - insanely moist and delicious! Would highly recommend! Chicken Adana wrap - could have used more meat in it and the fries were lacking salt but that's easily fixable! Sütlaç -the oven baked pudding was good The table cloth on the tables kept moving which was a bit frustrating, not sure what other restaurants do to hold it down. Menu has so many options, something for everyone. Bringing your family or a big friend group is a good idea!”

On the other hand, would I like it? Would it meet my growing expectations on FSS?The answer was, in spite of significant hype and exceedingly high expectations, absolutely amazing. “Wow! We (my husband and I) had a great experience here tonight. We don't have a lot of experiences with Nepalese food. The only other place we've ever been is White Yak in Manayunk/Roxborough, so we can't speak to the authenticity of the food. The momos here were different from the ones we had at White Yak but equally delicious. We tried the Himalayan Chilly flavor and the Tandoori flavor and both were flavor bombs! We didn't have a favorite because they were both so unique and different from each other. The Himalayan noodles were tasty too and reminded me a lot of Indochinese cuisine that I had in India. My husband has a great spice tolerance so medium was just right for him, but I might have enjoyed mild a bit more. We look forward to returning and trying other styles of momos.”

Mulherin's Sons and they got us a table in about 15 minutes. We proceeded to have one of the best meals I've had in a while! Starters: the octopus was crispy but succulent and the focaccia was pillowy perfection! Cocktails were excellent. The sausage pizza had a wonderful mix of flavors and the crust!! ? I could have eaten the pizza crust on its own, honestly. Thick and chewy on the edges and perfectly done throughout. We also shared a seasonal pasta with ramps, morels, peas, and asparagus, and got the chocolate mousse cake and gelato for dessert, which were heavenly. “We had a wonderful experience.  I read an article about its opening  in December and was intrigued, so I made reservations for my birthday in March. We arrived about 20 minutes early for our seating (minimum required is 10 minutes early).  When we entered we were greeted very warmly.  The space is very serene and inviting, soft lights and very intimate. We were invited to have a seat in the lounge area and were each given a lovely complimentary mocktail and encouraged to relax for the short wait until our 8pm seating. We are new to Omakase. The concept and flow was explained to us in detail as well as how certain types of sushi are meant to be enjoyed (i.e., nigiri is a single bite of balanced flavors and you pick it up with your fingers).  The education ahead of time was super helpful. I did not know this. The evening was a beautiful presentation of courses, carefully prepared and explained. Each piece of sushi had a unique flavor, which I believe is due to the high quality of fish and the perfect balance of wasabi and sushi rice.  The fish was so fresh and flavorful and not what you typically experience when you go for sushi, even in upscale establishments. Most of the fish I was trying for the first time  - some from Japan, some from Spain and other regions.  All wonderful! We ordered the sake and whiskey pairing, each drink chosen to match the specific dish. We were given the origin and tasting notes of each, which really helped educate us for the future.  I thought I didn't like sake, but now I have three bottles on my "to purchase" list. The service was very attentive without being intrusive. The front of house staff was knowledgeable and you could tell they truly wanted you to have a wonderful experience.  It was very, genuine - kind people generous in sharing their knowledge.  The chef interacts with you throughout the meal, explaining the ingredients and the preparation process, making the experience educational as well. For us, this experience was about more than just food; it gave us an appreciation for art, tradition, and craftsmanship.  There was a ceremonial aspect to it and I came away feeling like I learned something valuable as well.  We are definitely coming back.  The value for what you receive is excellent.”
